youll have to get a factory unlocked one from the US to keep it legal.
and why would they unlock US iphones. when Aircel/airtel etc are selling their own iphones.

try getting iphone4 from ebay or craigslist while in USA. You get unlocked ones, expensive though.

The factory unlocked recently launched from Apple doesn't guarantee a working 3G - Not atleast for T-Mobile, so i think it should be same for India.

But if you get it from other sites, it will work without any problems.

If you bring a locked phone, airtel/aircel won't do it for you since they won't touch it considering it will be a US phone. You will have to get it done outside.

Or you could do it yourself by following the instructions at http://www.iclarified.com … it's fairly easy.

The iPhone does not get 3G speeds on T-Mobile because T-Mobile USA uses different bands of 3G (need both 1700 and 2100 MHz) than the ones the iPhone (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz) supports.

That is not the case with India. In India, the gsm iPhone4 will surely work with 3G bands of all providers, as long its unlocked.

P.S: The iPhone4 available from Airtel and Aircel in India are sold unlocked, and can be used with any SIM from any service provider in India, as long as it is (or is cut to) a MicroSIM. If the provider has 3G, you can choose to get a 3G signal as well.

Which band does airtel/aircel use for 3G in India?

My iphone 3GS, use to work fine in India but it was JB/UL from start. From what i have read, Apple's unlocked iphone has too many restrictions in terms of 3G and baseband, its expensive - $600 for 16gb and is available ONLY on Apple's website and not in store.

I already had a bad experience ordering from Apple's website, so i would be in 2 minds doing the same again.

Also, this means a new iphone is due anytime.

Alas, not in India.

The new iphone4 has just been launched here in India (well, not too far back). We can expect Iphone5 when Iphone6 is due in the west.

Agreed. I was referring to iphone 5 in USA. That's why Apple started selling unlock iphone 4. Never seen Apple do that.

I got my Iphone4 factory unlocked 1 week back @ 30k in Pune. It's absolute fantastic experience (lil restrictions here and there but i forget them as soon as i see the screen).
It's so crisp and smooth. I just love it. upgraded it to iOS 4.3.3
Jailbroken already (couldnt stop myself)

Congratulations, Nicky. What restrictions are you facing? I would have thought factory unlocked pieces have none.

Did you buy it off a retailer or an independent dealer?

Thanks I bought it from a independent dealer who keeps most of the foreign models in Pimpri Market (called Videshi Mobile Market).

Thanks Orko, restrictions in my case refers to the lack of Smart Dialer (though available in the market but nothing is on par) and lack of customizations for screen display like live wallpaper (after jailbreak yes you can have it).
but all these were know to me prior (certainly not the deal breaker) so no complaint but just a mention.

Are there custom Keyboad apps for iPhone like Swype for Android?

Unfortunatley there are no keyboard replacements out there yet for the iPhone.

The closest you can get to Swype is an app called ShapeWriter which gives you the Swype interface, then you can copy-paste what you have typed into the email/SMS app...

yup!
quite a few on cydia.
JB is necessary, though.
then you can try out which one suits you.
Personally i think the native is the easiest.
I think youve knocked around enough now, whether to buy it or not.
GO!!
do it!
