After a lot of reading, thinking and analysis - all I have done is to get confused.

Putting the things upfront - I am looking out for a GPS navigation system to be used for car. Which will be helpful for navigation on my long drives and through unknown cities. Budget around 15k.

After exploring various options I have narrowed down on going for the following three options, the pros and cons are listed with the options.

Please provide your comments and valuable adds on the option listed below and suggest the option I should go in for.

Option 1:
A dedicated GPS navigator (various options from Garmin or MMI). Cost around 10k.
various devices in mind: MMI VX-140 or Road Piolet II premium

Pros:
- a standalone device, so would be dedicated and just for a single purpose.
- Proper in-car mounting available.

Cons:
- no other use, the amount around 10k will be left locked in.


Option 2:
A 7-inch dual core tablet + Sygic navigation system + maps from MMI. Cost around 15k (12k for tablet + 3k for maps)
various devices in mind:Swingtel HelloTab 16GB, Micromax Funbook Pro, Mercury mTab 2
Pros:
- Tablet can be used in a umpteen number of ways.
- Cost of GPS will be just additional 3k.

Cons:
- Mounting of the device in car, will have to be worked upon.


Option 3:
A 4/5 inch touch screen GPS enabled mobile phone + Sygic navigation system + maps from MMI. Cost around 15k (12k for tablet + 3k for maps).
various devices in mind: Samsung Ace,

Pros:
- a handy GPS navigator.
- a multimedia Mobile phone.

Cons:
- a bit smaller screen.

Thanks. That's a great piece of info indeed. No more hassles with sygic and other paid nav apps.

BTW... How do you go about caching maps in the navigation? or should I use google maps to do it?

The convenience of standalone GPS is something else. Besides, what about navigating in areas without network signal. I do that a lot. The best thing would be Garmin unit with Google maps.

Just checked. Along with navigation, the live traffic information has also been enabled for following cities.
Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

And it's available in Desktop version of google map as well.

I just bought Sygic

But... as I understand it from a bit of reading yesterday, navigation won't work with offline maps without an active data signal, so it is good good good, but still not up with Nokia's mapping.

Not true. Sygic works fine without any data connection.

Got an e-mail from Garmin that NavTeq 2012.30 is now available for download. Working on that. It is 571MB.

Just back from a Goa/Amboli Ghat trip. The Sygic / MapMyIndia on my Android is just brilliant. Had all POI in Goa. Navigation is excellent as well. If you don't like a route it selects, just put a via point in between. It works. And it never tried to route me through gallis. Routes through proper routes. Rs. 2K well spent!

I thought you were using a Garmin device with Satguide. Did you change later?
