Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Another way is to run android on your Car PC. This way you can use Google Maps/Sygic and many other navigation software.

To do that, you will need to:

1. Run android on your PC (In a VM if Windows is primary OS) : http://www.android-x86.org/
2. Setup GPS to be available in this Mock VM and drivers for GPS
3. Install Market / Play Store app
4. Install Sygic etc or just use Google maps

Its a hack, but it might work.

Got a notification from Garmin about a new India map update - 2012.40. Garmin PND owners can head over to the site for the download.

If you have a Garmin you might want to check this site:

http://www.openstreetmap.org

You can download any map, any section for free and install it on your Garmin. It might work with other GPS devices as well.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

I hope this is the right place to ask - Didn't find a better place in my quick search

Has anyone been using Mapmyindia's latest map update (v.7.1) - launched sometime in Nov 2012. I'm currently using v7.0. Want to know if it's worth thousand bucks.

(Of course, the question is generic - but it would be great it someone can tell if v7.1 has Chennai's routes updates. There are several updates to Chennai traffic routes in past few months)

Re: Renault Duster : Official Review

Guys, need your inputs here.
I plan to buy MapmyIndia GPS Navigation for my Duster RXL 110PS. Out of various options I have zeroed to Model ZX250. Following are the salient features:
  • Portable GPS Navigator
  • 12.7 cm (5 inch) colour touchscreen
  • Zx250 is powered by Aura & offers Large touchscreen
  • India's first portable 3D navigator with full 3D landmarks
  • Built-in city and travel guides
  • Multimedia player for music, movies and photos
  • Bluetooth for hands-free calling
  • SUPPORTS REVERSE CAMERA IN CAR (very important for me)
The price quoted to me by Reliance Autozone is 15750 rs. I also plan to buy reverse sensors with camera for 5500 rs which will be integrated to MapmyIndia so that I can view the reverse on MapmyIndia LCD.
I have following questions:
  • Is model no. Zx250 a good GPS device to use?
  • Is Reliance Autozone (Gurgaon) quoting me the right price?
  • What precautions should I take in case I plan to get it installed?
  • Any other view point!!

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Just to report that Sygic had map updates some time ago. I had complained about outdated maps and I was told that there is updated map data available. I don't know why it did not happen automatically, but finally I updated map for my state.
The one year old Yerwada bridge is finally showing up on the map. Hurray!

I don't know what other information has been added, since I hardly travel these days.

But please update the map and share your feedback with Sygic team.

I am using google DNS (4.4.4.4 and 8.8.8.8). You can try if that helps since "server not found" is usually a DNS issue.

I cannot do that from work. Our DNS at IITK is pretty robust. Have cribbed to Garmin. Let is see.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

I just thought to look at the Manage Maps page on my Sygic. Top of the My Sygic page is:

Special Christmas Offer: Buy 1 & get 1 free
as a present for a friend

My italics. For those who want to pool and share Sygic without sharing a gmail address, it looks as if it is possible, for a limited time, right now.

(but no relevant updates for me, since the last time I looked a few weeks ago.)

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Just unboxed this last evening. Of course this is not for navigating while on the roads but to just create a map of where I had gone after a trip. Very basic.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Garmin CN India 2012.40 downloaded, did the 2012.30 version support JCV and SID ? this version is about 680MB and the maps are 455MB with detailed view for almost all North, West and Southern cities in India with JCV and SID, I now have a reason to upgrade my device. Using the maps for just a day and till now the overall feel is that its more well laid out though I earlier had the 2011.20 version and this does feel like a sea of difference.

Linky to download the lastest 2012.40 from Garmin server.

I'm still using Mapsource but BaseCamp has many more options and feels more user friendly. Also I dont know why but I always feel MapMyIndia maps are more accurate than Garmin, hope its just a case of grass being greener on the other side.
