Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Almost a year since I switched to a Mac (well, since I was forced to switch because of a new job). Was a bit non-intuitive initially, but now I can do everything I used to do on my Windows laptops as easily. Also no issues switching between my personal Win laptop and this one.

At the same time, I don't see what the "cult" is all about. Yep, it feels slightly more premium than comparable HP/Dell laptops I've used, but nothing spectacular. Can go between either- I don't care. (Stevie fans, please don't come after me! ) Battery life seems considerably better, I'll take that, welcome change.

Still some irritating things I'm discovering though. Recently was working out of a small lodge in a small town. Thought I could lock the laptop like any other to a fixed table leg and so had brought my old laptop lock. Of course the damn Macbook doesn't have an in-built slot! I'll of course have to buy some fancy attachment. Managed by locking it in a bag and then chaining that bag to the table, but what a pain.

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Guys, I urgently need some advice regarding my 2016 MacBook pro with a touch bar.

It all started when the display was not working properly like when u keep it at a 30-degree angle it will work properly, but when opening the lid fully the screen blackouts completely.

But then when I came to know that my device is eligible for replacement as Apple had some manufacturing defects in that series. Mainly the flex cable issue. So I gave it to an authorized apple service centre. But after 2 days they called me back telling me that when they were diagnosed they found a separate display issue and called me telling me that I won't get it free of cost but if I'm willing to pay 48k they can change the display.

Then I took the laptop and gave it to another authorized centre and they told me they can give me a free replacement. But then after their diagnosis, they told me that some other issues related to the motherboard issue are there (with some tampering) and hence free replacement can't be done and I have to pay 95k to change the display and the motherboard...

Then I called the 1st service center asking how come these extra issues came...But they are denying that they have not tampered with anything and also haven't even opened the device while diagnosing, which I don't buy.

So what should I do in this situation, Can we take any legal action against them?
but then I don't have much proof of who is telling the truth

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Guys,

Which adapter should I go for? Anker 5 in 1 that retails for around 4.6k is available for 2.1k. No idea if the website is genuine - https://www.hatke.co.in/products/ank...832f1c57&_ss=c

Else, considering Belkin (7k) or Apple (6.9k).

Recommendations please. It's for the M2 MBA.

Looks like the single nand chip on the m2 air is a real downer!

I think m1 air 256 gigs+ 16 gb ram is the way to go for the cheapest mac which can do 4k video renders without burning a hole through the chassis or my pocket!

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Kochi-Tbhpians, any recommendation for a reliable service centre here to get my Macbook Air repaired ?
The original issue was "not booting up". I tried a few service centres around Kadavanthara area who diagnosed it
as battery issue (Apple online support also said the battery could be the probable cause), and each of whom quoted
their own fancy price for the battery (from 8K to 18K) but didn't have it in stock.

Finally got battery from the US via a friend and installed it myself. But even after replacing with new battery, it doesn't come up.

There's iCare in Edappally. No personal experience but have heard many recommending this place.

I recall one vlogger promoting a store that specialises in Apple repairs but at reasonable cost. Think it was Ebadu Rahman.

It may well be a hard drive issue - drive could either be failing or has failed. I had a very similar issue a few weeks back with my iMac; and replacing the failed HDD with a new SSD has rejuvenated the machine and has made it boot and work.

Cheers

Inspite of quite some googling, I couldn't locate the video where he references this store. If you have the link, please do post. Thanks.

Ok, thanks. Was the issue same with your Mac too ie. totally dead, not booting up at all ?

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

No physical damage was there..But they are telling me after diagnoses that
the motherboard has to be replaced along with the display gave me a quote of 95k.
Also because of these other issues, they said I'm not eligible for the free display replacement. I feel like I'm taken for a ride here because when I gave them for service it was working properly except that the display goes blank if we open the lid more than 30 degrees.

I called Apple customer care but they said they can do anything only on the basis of the diagnosis result the authorized centers send them.

Apologies for the delayed response - I was away.

Well, it would display the Apple logo and the progress bar below it would progress to maybe 50% and then it would restart and repeat this, ad infinitum.

Cheers

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

After 20+ years of using Windows machines, the last decade of which was almost exclusively Thinkpad machines - across T, L and X series - moved to a Macbook at office. Moved mainly because the Lenovo's are getting very bad in terms of the build and overall reliability.
Moving data from my Lenovo X280 to the Mac was easy since all of it was on OneDrive. I love the audio and video quality, leaps ahead of Lenovo. Had moved 200+ GB data from OneDrive to the macbook and it didn't break a sweat (a Lenovo would be huffing and puffing in 2 mins) - I have the 13 inch M2 chip, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB HDD config. The Touch Bar and Touch ID are impressive, especially the way the Touch Bar functions change dynamically. A full charge easily lasts the whole day

What I am getting used to, but not yet there:
  1. The Backspace and Page Up Page Down buttons are missed
  2. The move from Alt/Cntrl to Cnrl/Option/Command buttons has not been too difficult, but takes time recalling the 'new' keyboard shortcuts
  3. MS Office apps are taking time getting used to - mainly since I am used to a lot of Keyboard shortcuts in PPT, Excel etc that I now have to relearn on the Mac
  4. The Finder Vs MS Explorer is what is the most cumbersome. Simple things like deleting files (move to Bin in Mac Vs just hitting the Delete button in MS), drag and drop are missed

Build-wise though, this is generations better in terms of being able to pack so much compute / Data / Screen quality in a 13 inch sleek form is whats impressed me the most.

Use Cmd+Delete instead of just Delete. Cmd is the key adjacent to the spacebar.

Thanks Tilt.
Another question, is there a way to manage the screen snips ? Windows has a very handy screen snipping tool. The equivalent of that is Command+Shift+4 in MacOS, but it doesn't have the option of making any markups or highlights (for example I take a snip and want to underline or highlight a certain part of the screen grab). There are "paid" tools that one can install from the Appstore, but I feel this is a very basic feature. In Windows, I can Snip a part of the screen, make any highlights and it gets copied onto the clipboard and a simple Cntl+V will paste it on my MS Teams chat. I can still do that on the Mac, just that I haven't yet found an easy / intuitive way of doing that on the Mac
