As if the OS upgrade is really a consumer choice. Except a few enthusiasts who flash custom ROMs any Android release sees mass acceptance once OEM and carriers ( in USA) releases binaries.

As of today only Nexus and Moto X / G devices have L binaries and this this just proves one point that Nexus devices have minuscule deployment and are really not as popular ZDNet or other psudo-tech press wants us to believe.

Let the FOTA updates loaded with so called "crapware" from OEMs get released and the pie-chart will change.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Really frustrated with Android Lollipop on my Nexus 5. The Chrome crashes all the time and worst it is easily repeatable, just open 4-5 separate tabs with different websites, the battery life has gone down considerably around 2.5 hours of screen on time with minimal calls, the camera is exactly the same as kitkat so much so for all the hype and hoopla surrounding the new camera api's! The bug fix releases from Google take a lot of time coming and its frustrating considering the distribution of the Nexus devices isn't much.

I expected more from Google but as things stand, Lollipop is a slightly prettier but far more unstable version of the KitKat that I so loved. And the animation may be 60fps as per their claims but the scrolling and the general UI performance is still nowhere near Apple. Even my iPhone 4S feels and works smoother on iOS 8, crashes less and run's all games with consistent framerate which seems to be an uphill tasks for the hot running Nexus 5 with a quad core 2.3 ghz CPU and 2 GB of RAM. I will move to the latest iPhone shortly and get done with my Nexus.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Seeking some advice on a new Android phone. The main priority is good call quality and signal receptivity. Am not much into apps. Apart from calls/SMS, the main uses will be Whatsapp, Google maps/GPS, email and some amount of browsing.

Would like to keep it under 20k but can go up to 30k for a good product that I can keep for say 3 years.

If you are looking for three years, then there are two real options - 1. Next of an earlier generation (upgrades guaranteed), or 2. htc Desire (excellent build quality). My wife has a Desire X running Gingerbread, otherwise no issues.

Do not restrict yourself to Android if you are not going to use many apps. You can also look at the Nokia Lumia range. They are usually good at telephony.

Completely agree with this. Lollipop has made me keep my phone on charge for most of the day (which was not the case with KitKat). Spot on with the observation on the Camera. In fact apps have become more buggy ever since I moved to Lollipop. One more irritating thing is that Lollipop doesn't have 'Silent' mode. By silent, I mean completely silent (no vibration, no sound). I wonder why it was taken off

You can do that even now. Just press the volume down button and select interruptions as "None".

I suppose you meant Nexus. What's your view on Moto X2/G2, especially in terms of call quality?

The main reason why I would like Android is because Google maps are important for me. Am a real fan of that and don't want any dilution in user experience on that front.

There are no voice quality issues! Yes, I did mean Nexus, older ones are now being discounted. Even Nexus 4 can be upgraded to Lollipop. My not be so for the next release of Android.

Nokia Lumia is really good in terms of call quality.
Have you used Nokia Here maps or here drive?? If not, I would suggest you to use them just once. Many people say they are better than google maps. Plus you get lifetime free offline navigation and maps of the whole world! Have been using them since the past 1.5 years. All I can say is its amazing. Do have a look And in case you like it, I would suggest Nokia Lumia 730. Brilliant phone and retails at around 14k

Hope this helps.

If you can extend budget upto 30k then, Moto X second gen is a great phone which will serve you easily for next three years as it will surely get future android updates and with powerful hardware under the hood, Moto X will also hold future apps very well.
