Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I finally took the plunge.
After a lot of comparisons between Galaxy S2 and Xperia S , went in for Xperia S.

So far everything has been great.

Upgraded to ICS 4.0.4. No issues at all the upgrade went smooth.

Installed a lot of free apps as well.

PS - Thanks for letting us know about the speed. Guess I will fully charge my phone tonight and get it updated tomorrow morning. Dont want to get stuck in office.
That's epic fail from kies as usual. Dump kies, download the ROM and flash with PC Odin. Flashing will happen in under five minutes. It's a cake walk really!

You must have selected Tools-> Firmware Upgrade and Initialization to get this popup window.

To upgrade over Kies, you can just click on the orange "Firmware Upgrade" button that appears on the main screen on the right once Kies detects the Note connected to the PC. I've attached a relevant screenshot for reference.

I tried updating my Xperia u to the latest firmware update provided by Sony. But I couldn't go beyond the update step. PC companion asks to disconnect the phone, switch it off, wait for 5 seconds and connect back again. This repeats again and again. Can anyone help regarding this? Can I use pc Odin for this update?

Have you updated Kies yet? If not then you need to update the software itself, then you will get that option. Happened in my case when i had to install 4.0.3.

Why arent you trying to flash the new firmware via pcODIN? That is one hassle free method.

Mine is an Xperia S , luckily I did not face any such issue.
However it did take a long time to download around 25min . Once that was done it asked me to disconnect the phone, then phone re-booted 2 times and was up and running.

I think there are some issues reported with the Xperia U upgrade. I suggest you wait for a few more days till the fix this issue and then retry.

I have tried updating from Kies. It stops in middle with different messages..
1st time, it said that the device is not connected. But it was.
2nd time, it failed with "time out" error

Is there a tutorial somewhere to use pcODIN?

This errors in Kies is very bugging. Always something has to happen and again put for redownloading.

Download the firmware file from samfirmware.com. then download pcODIN from xda devleopers site.

After that put the phone into download mode by pressing volume down+power+home button.

Start PC ODIN in administrator mode. Then connect the phone via USB till it shows in ODIN as added.

Then click PDA button and select the downloaded firmware.

Then press start in ODIN.

After its completed it ODIN will show PASS in green and "success".

The file is flashed onto the phone and once completed it auto reboots and then phone will be having the new upgrade.

Experts feel free to correct it if anything is wrong here.

Cheers.

Thanks so much for the detailed guide. After several attempts to get it updated thru' Kies... finally gave up the whole idea of updating it.

Just one query regarding the PCODIN method. Will kies still recognize your phone after you flash the update on PCODIN. Recognize as in check version and keep us informed if there is any update?

Yes I guess so. Mainly because you are flashing official Samsung firmware. So kies should recognise it.
Kies is just not that great. For updates you can keep checking this thread. Someone will post it when an update comes out

Cheers

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Guys, tried the firmware update using kies. Got an error message "Insufficient space. 3000MB required" What does that mean?

Also, did anyone get OTA software update? I got the notification yesterday night. Didnt update since I was using 2G. Tried today morning but got "No software Update".

Anyone else got this?
