It is important to understand Maruti's target market first and then come up with a wish list.

As much as i understand, Maruti targets middle and at most upper middle class folks who are budget conscious and mileage is a big consideration for them. Also, Maruti targets a single car garage and hence a 5 door car instead of a 3 door one. Maruti's target customers (mostly) are the family oriented working class or middle income businessmen, for whom holidaying/offroading is an infrequent event due to work pressures, kids school, family matters etc.etc., and hence this car would cater to urban driving, with a little bit of tolerance for outstation rough roads.

Serious offroaders should not hold their breath for Jimny launch. It is not going to be near Thar or Gurkha, no matter how hard yor pray/scream/curse.

I anticipate that Maruti is trying to fill the void left by Ecosport and hence this decision to bring in Jimny now. A comfortable urban "SUV looking" vehicle that can serve as the only car in a garage.

I agree with the your initial assessment of the Maruti buyer. But what you saying above is not true. Jimny is essentially a body on frame vehicle and there is not way to make it soft. Besides the Brezza is the direct alternative to the Ecosport. Body on frame vehicles are inherently more expensive. Maruti believes in volumes. Hence making the Jimny 4-Door will widen the appeal including for Defence/Government Orders. But, a Jimney will 100 mm extra and two additional doors will remain a serious off-roader. Most likely the best available in India.

If you are looking for a comfortable urban SUV, why would anyone pick this over the Brezza?

No GNCAP results available. The 2018 3 door Jimny was tested at EuroNCAP and it scored 3 stars. Below are the results. But EuroNCAP is generally considered more comprehensive and stricter than GNCAP.

Considering the high pricing of the Grand Vitara, what could be the expected price range of Jimny 5 door 4x4 with AT in India?

- Release date of Jimny 5 door is Auto Expo 12th Jan-23, in Japan it will be in fall of 2023.

- Wheelbase of the three-door Jimny Sierra will be extended by 300mm to 2550mm, and the length will be 3,850× 1,645 × 1,730mm. The 300mm extension will be used for the rear seat space.

- Speculation on the powertrain was of the European S Cross(1.4-liter 48V mild hybrid) OR a K15C inline 4-cylinder 1.5-liter and a strong hybrid with a NA dual jet engine + motor installed in the new Vitara.

- The company is moving toward a 1.5-liter strong hybrid.

- The K15C inline 4-cylinder 1.5-liter, NA dual-jet engine used in the Jimny Sierra 5-door generates 101ps/13.5kgm engines and 33.4ps/6.1kgm motors. The transmission is expected to be MT and AT

- Jimny Sierra 5-door expected specs
- Overall length × width× overall height: 3850×1645×1730mm
- Wheelbase: 2550mm

And in that case, it would mean that we get the AGS/AMT. The Suzuki hybrid is mated to the AGS/AMT transmission and not the TC.

Suzuki has its own Strong Hybrid Power-train in addition to its Mild Hybrid Power-trains, although it may not be of the class of Toyota Strong Hybrids. Definitely we will see them in India at some point of time within this decade.

Now as far as the Jimny is concerned, there is no Strong Hybrid in it for India. I have no idea about Japan variant. The Indian variant will have full Auto and not the AGS.

Lots of conflicting info here: is the powertrain hybrid or petrol (mild hybrid = normal petrol in my books)?, and is the AT AGS or AT? 6 or 4 speed?

I’ve always been assuming 1.5K series with 6AT..
