This is what the Rangers in the National Parks use in Kenya.

I can see why they are getting confused, but its clearly a Zebra.

Here's a close screenshot of a video posted earlier.

And this reads YWD 5DR MT K15B HI-LED

YWD - Code name of the car
5DR - 5 Door
MT - Manual Transmission
K15B - Engine
HI-LED - Variant with LED headlights?

If I compare the Jimny with the Vitara/Hyryder AWD-

The power to weight ratio of the Jimny will be approximately 85 Bhp/ton compared to the Grand Vitara/Hyryder AWDs 81 Bhp/ton.

A K15B is any day more fun to drive than the K15C.

Smaller footprint of the Jimny will make it a breeze to drive within the city.

A low range gearbox vs an AWD!

For a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, a Jimny can actually be considered as a good alternative to the Vitara/Hyryder AWD!

Though the above comparison is not a fair one, as these vehicles just belong to different segments, but again a lot of cross shopping do happen. There are cases like a prospective Honda City owner ended up buying a Thar! So no harm in comparing!

Here is this Jimny’s Grandpapa. (Scale Model)
The Suzuki Jimny SJ410 from 1982 whose long chassis version was built for India as the long serving (and long suffering) Maruti Gypsy.

How does the Jimny look when seen from inside a Thar?

Wow. So that’s indeed an interesting perspective! I wonder when these fellows will bring the Jimny into the showrooms, for us to see, test and experience. I am a little worried that being Maruti, even the Nexa showroom staff are lackadaisical at best. I think I will invest in building a relationship with the nearest Nexa showroom chaps by taking my well kept Gypsy there now and then to impress them and indicate seriousness of intent as regards the Jimny.

From the eyes of a road user, its a very welcome size!
I would rather follow a passable Jimny than stuck behind the gaudy monstrosity called Thar (no offence to Thar users) with its ever flashing led tail lights numbing my eyes!

Re: Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door caught testing in India

Why do these manufacturers create so much suspense?
Why dont they just announce the launch plans.
And start taking pre bookings.
I like this Jimny. And will be happy to book straightaway.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door caught testing in India

After seeing this shot closely I feel like Maruti has favoured boot space over rear seat space. I still hope maruti proves me wrong as most of Indians need a practical car which can serve multiple purposes. I know there are a lot of people who are eying jimny as a lifestyle car or their weekend toy to play with but there a lot more people in India who cannot maintain two cars. By making it a bit practical maruti can target a much larger customer base.

P.S. 220-250 litres of boot space is enough with a rear seat space equal to wagor r or ignis.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door caught testing in India

If one were to walk into an American or European 4x4 enthusiasts cafe and with a big smile say, "Did you know the Suzuki Samurai/Jimny is really tiny next to the likes of a Jeep Wrangler or Defender 90?", you will only get a disinterested bored glance back at you from the local audience. This is not news to the world at all.

Here are some size comparison pics. Our Mahindra Thar is dimensionally close to the Jeep Wrangler/Defender 90 while the Suzuki Samurai/Jimny/Gypsy has always remained tiny next to it. IMHO, nothing new really! And in spite of this, the Jimny is a legend!

The Samurai was a good hit in the US when it used to be sold there. It is even now being used in various parts of EU and NZ as a workhorse.

The Samurai/Jimny was always designed to fit within the Japanese Kei-Jidosha or "K"-Car segment. Hence the restrictions on overall width, length and engine displacement remains. In Japan to qualify for a "K" car, the vehicle cannot displace more than 660cc or be 1475mm wide and be under a certain overall length.
It has huge advantages for India actually. The Gypsy, (basically Samurai long wheelbase), because of its narrow width could easily weave its way through narrow forest and hill trails. Also being a sub one tonne vehicle as far as overall kerb weight was concerned, the Gypsy could simply skip and jump its way over obstacles compared to other mightier and much heavier SUV's which simply got bogged down due to their weight and girth.
