My Experience: In my earlier car I had a basic sensor which served my purpose well. My my current ride, in addition to the sensors, I got a reverse cam also. After using the camera, my feeling was that just the camera is not helpful enough. I was not comfortable judging with just the camera picture (Even with the yellow/red lines marked). Also with just a camera you need to be focused on the camera display, a sensor will allow you to pay more attention to other areas like the front, sides etc...

So for me at least, the camera is a complement to the sensors, I use it to get a picture of the area behind and then rely more on sensors and my eyes during the actual reversing process.

Hence I suggest you get both.

Quotes range from 6000 to about 8500. Brands I saw - Minda/Xenos/Worldtech etc.

All the models have a display integrated into the IRVM - which will sit on top of the existing IRVM.

I was browsing through similar products on ebay/aliexpress. The ones on aliexpress are almost half the price the shopkeepers quoted me! Even if I have to pay for the installation, it will still work out cheaper than the options shown to me.

I am thinking of taking a risk with aliexpress this time, what do you guys suggest?

I am not comfortable putting an additional clip-on mirror over my existing IRVM, hence ordered a Worldtech dash mountable 4.3" LED screen Night vision camera from SnapDeal. It retails for around 2.6K, currently they are running a 10% off by applying some promocode. The sensors I picked up from Ebay for Rs. 900. The sensor installation costed me another 300/- The camera is yet to be installed as I am not finding time for the same.

Overall I am quite happy with only the sensors but then someone suggested me to have the camera, so I began hunting a reverse camera. I had almost ordered it through AliExpress when I came across this deal from Snapdeal and hence ordered it from them.

Please look at models having dash mounted display. Clip-on IRVM displays rattle at low speeds & show shaky image on display.
In addition to this, one loses functionality of day-night flip switch of IRVM if one drives in night.

Thanks guys, will hunt around for sensor only deals. Can always add a cam later if I find the sensors inadequate.

Let me add to the discussion.
The priority should be (IMHO)
1.sensors
2.camera

The sensors aid in a lot of stuff. They beep when stupid people cross without looking and small kids as well.

The camera is a nice to have, and it's also good ,but In my innova I rarely use the camera as I reverse with the hand on the passenger seat and continuous neck movements to see the mirrors.

At the other end of the spectrum, two of my cars have AV units integrated with the camera, and I'm able to get a full 180 degree view behind the car using this with the ORVMs.
Third one has a standalone screen stuck to top right of the windscreen, and it also does the job, although not as intuitive to use as the stereo units.

The gist is that over time, you'll adapt the best combination of watching, or hearing, along with craning your neck to reverse spectacularly...

Hi there!

Are the AV units+Rear View Cameras OEM fixtures in your cars? Or did you buy and integrate them with your rear view cameras?

I'm looking for something that can integrate with my Optra's 2 DIN HU console. Do you have any recommendations? Budget is within 20-25k, if that's enough.

That's more than enough.
I picked the cameras for under 2k each.
The Sony unit cost me 23 k ,an xav 63bt, and the megaaudio unit was 12k.
The cameras are from dx, but they are very hardy, and very good performance. Basically the same things that retail here after getting shipped from dx only.

I am looking for someone who (or their friend) has tried installing a reverse camera in XUV W6. Going by the reviews on this thread, using an additional clip-on irvm for camera display is problematic because it affects the day/night mode functionality of the OEM irvm and causes lots of vibration too(one needs to put some foam padding between the two irvms to absorb the vibrations). In that case, ftting an LCD display monitor on the driver's side of the dashboard is the only option since in W6, the touchscreen unit on the centre console doesn't have inputs for reverse camera display. Also, is the LCD monitor screwed on to the dashboard or does it get attached like a mobile or gps navigation device using a holder? Would love to get feedback(like usability, durability etc.) on any of these options or any other arrangement folks may have tried on W6.

re: The reversing camera & parking sensor thread

Hello guys,

This is my first post in this forum.

A few days back i made a video of a car rear view monitor and a color night vision reverse camera. I picked the set up off ebay.in for less than 4k. Here is a short (15 min) video review of it.

I have recently also added ultrasonic parking sensors too. I will make a similar video for them really soon.

re: The reversing camera & parking sensor thread

If one uses a dashboard-mounted LCD screen for reverse camera display, wouldn't the screen get heated up when the car is parked in the sun for an hour or longer ? And if so, wouldn't that damage the display/circuit inside? Also, since it would be obvious from the outside that a screen has been put up near the dash, wouldn't there be a theft threat as well? Or am I being too paranoid?

Haven't seen any issue for the one in my 5 year old car.

re: The reversing camera & parking sensor thread

I've been thinking about getting sensors and a front camera fitted but was concerned about damage to the plastic tabs on the bumpers and the drilling. There are electromagnetic sensors that don't require drilling though but still involve removing the bumper and hence the installation could damage the plastic tabs.

I prefer a camera to the sensors. The camera helps in seeing the actual distance and also help in locating the cement blocks that are placed in parking lots to prevent vehicles from getting too close to the walls (apparently, they are only found in buildings that were constructed by international firms).

Price-wise, it's definitely sensors first - they are cheaper to procure and install, though there is a risk of damaging the plastic tabs on the bumpers. Cameras need to be purchased with a screen - sometimes the ICE on the vehicle would support it if it's an after market ICE.

Not all sensors can detect non-metallic objects. I think the ones that come with a no-drilling-needed advertisement can only detect metal objects.

It's pretty much the same with after-market GPS - most of the GPS units are fitted to the windshield with a suction cup (and they do a poor job of sticking to the windshield so I use a double-sided tape instead) and plug into the cigarette lighter socket. If you have an SUV or are short, fit the screen to the top of the windshield and run the wiring along the pillar to make it less obvious.

The screens are built to tolerate the heat unlike laptop LCD screens. Of course, with the Indian summers, you can expect some damage if you don't leave the windows open - there were cases of shattered windshields, melted plastics, and damaged electronics when the temperatures reached 48C (the temperature within the vehicle would have been higher because of the greenhouse effect).

re: The reversing camera & parking sensor thread

How is the front dash cam typically fitted up?
Is there much digging about and drilling and destruction?

I want one but am very wary indeed.

I got a reverse camera LCD display fitted on my dashboard. It's stuck on to the dash (with glue type material) to the right side of the steering wheel just next to the odometer/rpm display unit. Looks quite snug and no wiring is visible as such. Will click a pick and share if you want.
