Dad went to a known MRF dealer and he said just by looking at the car that the alignment is out. He said we see a lot of customers coming to us at 20-25 K with bald tires with the ply visible and that the ones on our Duster were still better.

Dad told him how the SA said that the tires are defective and everyone is facing this problem with MRF. The dealer said that they are in talks with the manufacturer for changing the standard alignment settings as they do not agree with the ones the manufacturer has prescribed. (I thought this was bullshit as alignment is not tire company dependent, what he might be saying is that stock duster alignment must be set a little off from the company and that same alignment must have been taken as reference by the service centers and they continue the same leading to shorter tire life.)

Anyway, the dealer said to meet with MRF engineers sitting in their Shashtri Nagar office in Jaipur and get the tires checked for defects. He said they will inspect and give it to you in writing that the tires are not defective.

After that Dad has decided to go to the service center and fight it out. For the last two services 10 K and 20 K they had specifically asked if we want wheel alignment to be done and we said 'Do whatever you think is necessary' but none of the service invoices show that Wheel Alignment was done. Could be possible that they wanted to show low service costs and did not do alignment so as to dupe the customer since that would be the only chargeable job on the bill apart from consumables. OR their alignment rig is so busy that they don't do it at all and claim that they deliver the cars on time. In the last service he also claimed that the alignment was checked and was found to be alright (not concurring with the MRF shop guy who checked the vehicle yesterday and could visually tell that the alignment was out.)

To worsen the matter the SA said that Duster will not run on Stock tires for more than 35 K. Which means that the malpractice of not aligning the wheels at the service centers is going on in Jaipur with just one dealer enjoying monopoly.

The MRF guy said if you buy the next set of tires from me and continue getting alignment and balancing from his shop, he will guarantee 50 K km from the Wanderers. We are also thinking of getting the spare wheel rim replaced with an Alloy Wheel and do old school 5 wheel rotation from 30 K service onwards.
I personally visited the Renault service center in Jaipur on the 18th of December and sat there for 2 hours wile they made a job card for checking tire noise. The job card only mentioned that but I doubt if any balancing, alignment or rotation was done. They just checked the tire pressure in all four tires which was (according to them) 40 psi in all four tires. This was after I got it filled to 29 psi from our nearby petrol pump two days earlier.

They said they did the wheel alignment or checked it i guess and said everything was fine. I did not receive any bill or the alignment report either.

The humming noise is still there.

Have quoted my post where I have put up pictures of all four tires. The wear and tear has increased since then but the more annoying part is the humming noise inside the cabin in the 45-60 kmph band. This usually is a sign of bearing failure but only if your tires are wearing out evenly, here it is difficult to point out since the noise might be due to unevenly worn out tires.

If you remember this was a common thing in the original Tata Sumo's as well.

As the Duster has struts in front - and the camber angle for struts is fixed, get the front suspension's lower arms checked for integrity. Also the steering knuckle assembly (specially where the tie rod/ball joint ends are meeting up with the knuckle assembly.

I don't know whether your friend is running stock rims or any fatty rim upgrades - if that is the case, then the excessive rim width sometimes plays truant with the toe settings to cause premature wear.

PS: Also get the strut bearings checked and the strut itself. sometimes strut bearings develop slack causing some lateral play causing the struts itself to shift laterally when the vehicle is running.
All this can only be checked if they first admit that nothing is wrong with the tires. The service center is not willing to agree that the tires are alright. Neither do they agree with the alignment done from outside nor do they do it themselves.

Looking at more and more posts about uneven wear on tyres, I am planning to continue this ritual at every 6K from now on, just to be on the safer side.
Best thing to do I guess. Long live your tires.

Re: Renault Duster : Official Review

Hello

After having done 7k KMs with my duster in 5 months, I am a happy owner. There are few glitches which will get sorted out during next service.

Could someone please advise on headlapms upgrade? I do not intend to spend too much but looking for mercury light headlamps at an affordable cost.

Thanks in advance!

Try Osram Night-breaker 55W, costs around 2.5K.
Only negative side of these hi lumen bulbs are they are short lived. Have a life or around a year or good usage.

Dont go for higher watts as the heat can damage the headlamp housing. Common problem is the yellowing of the clear glass.
Instead install Hella. It will increase the cool quotient as well

2.5K? Osram Nightbreakers are available for Rs. 800/- a pair in some online store. You should get NB+ for Rs. 1500/- max.

Do a basic alignment check for the toe-in & Camber readings. Stand there while the technician is doing it. Ensure that he has locked the steering wheel both while checking & also after wards while making corrections.

Toe in settings disturbance is one of the causes for the sort of pattern u are seeing. Happens when the car goes thru a large pothole @ speed and the lock nuts of the toe-in bar had not been correctly tightened previously.

Another reason is that the Camber angle is out of whack. This is a problem with the basic welded body of the car and allmost all cars do not have an adjustment for camber. You can correct this by using special camber adjustment bolts in place of the stock front strut mounting bolts. But the guy doing this really needs to know what he is doing.

Hi HillMan,
Is the installation on Duster an easy one. Should I go to some specialist shop to get the bulbs replaced?
Where did you get it done?

It's easy to replace bulb. It is detailed in the manual too.

The bulb we are talking here does not need any alterations and is an OEM replacement. Osram gives higher brightness for same watts.

Guys, after a fiasco with Ford over their 1.0 Ecosport, i'm now in the market for a petrol Duster. I would prefer the 1.2TCe engine, if it ever gets launched here, else the 1.6 NA motor that's currently available.
The Renault/Nissan dealers in Gurgaon do not have petrol Duster/Terrano available for test drives nor will they get those. Thus, would appreciate your experiences/knowledge on the performance of the petrol Duster. Am not really keen on mileage but more concerned about the adequacy of power for the large vehicle.

Cheers!

Re: Renault Duster : Official Review

Has anyone come across this type of LED tube strips and are these available in India? This is from ebay, uk. Any comments on this is welcome.
Just wish to add this to my duster accessories.

Re: Renault Duster : Official Review

Guys a little help... can you tell me which is the lowest option we could have of 85 ps version that has ABS? I don't want to go for option pack.
Can fog lamps and ICE be fitted extra? Can we have an option without ICE (I would like to go for another one).
Also would a extra mirror on the left hand side of the bonnet (like land cruisers) void the warranty?
Thanks in advance..

Sorry mate. Only the RXL Diesel with Options will fit your bill.
No other lower variant has ABS.
