re: Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

So looks like there is no bypass in place at Palaghat while coming from Ottapalam.
What is the best possible solution for this today?

Looks like there is no bye pass. I tried to find one but no one explained things properly. May be there exists one but due to language problem, communication was difficult.

"Coimbatore bye pass road engana indu". I think i am partially right. Please excuse me.

There is no bypass as such to get onto Ottapalam road, but it is relatively easy as you just continue straight on the NH47 at Chandranagar(where Aaryas is located). The NH47 takes a left there towards Thrissur, whereas to go to Ottapalam, you continue straight into Palakkad, and the road is called as GB Road from thereon(Gandhi Bazaar Road).Just keep on the road and it continues straight onto Ottapalam, past the KSRTC bus stand. However do agree the town is congested to drive through.

If you do need to bypass palakkad town, then the option is to get onto the Kozhikode road immediately after you leave NH47(you would not miss it as it is a big divided 4 lane road to your right, after the popular IndianOil petrol pump).Take that road,it crosses Olavakkod (Palakkad) railway station and continues till Mundur where the road forks.Take the left road which is the Perinthalmana road while the right fork is the Kozhikode highway.

Go on the left road till Mundur High School which would be on your right. The straight road goes to Mangalamkunnu-Cherplasserry-Perinthalmana where it merges back with the Palakkad-Kozhikode highway.

At the Mundur High School junction you divert to the left(well marked)and the road joins the Palakkad-Ottapalam road at Parli(past Parli Railway station)(7kms).This way you bypass the entire palakkad town and plus join the highway around 7-8kms after palakkad town.

This is a traffic free route and helps you get on to the ottapalam road without going through the palakkad town mess.Palakkad town is highly congested and the market areas are less said the better.

Palakkad town near KSRTC/Kapilavasthu hotel, Vadankanthara, Pattikara etc is also crowded but you can some how drive through. But the places like Bazaar street, GB road (Market road) is very very congested until you reach the starting point of Cbe road.Yes it is called Chandranagar where the Aaryas hotel is situated.

Up north, on the same NH-17, we have a narrower stretch between Mahe & Thalassery. I think Kodungallur-Paravur-Edapally stretch atleast have some decent alternatives but not Mahe-Thalassery stretch.

Overall well said and I too would highly recommend this route too. I had entered the Market road once on a rainy day and never ever took it again.
Just one point though - instead of asking for Perinthalmana road, I think it is better to ask for Cherplasserry road since NH-212 is more popular route to go to Perinthalmanna.

How comfortable it would be to follow the directions for someone who may not be able to read Malayalam? Worst case, if he can't speak Malayalam or Tamil as well?

Another option that I can think of is Mankara->Kuzhalmannam to switch over to NH-47 directly. Was good earlier but not sure of the present conditions and also this would suit more to someone heading to Pollachi (via Koduvayoor) than Coimbatore.

Thanks Ranjit - this is very useful information to bypass the palakkad town to proceed to Ottapalam, etc.

Route to go inside Palakkad town towards KSRTC bus stand:
Looking at your map link, I realised that I was always getting stuck in the market/GB Road when I head towards Kapilavasthu since I used to go past the railway crossing and then make a left to go towards mission school/KSRTC bus stand. The only other alternative I knew was to get into NH47 where it turns left (Chandranagar) and then take first right turn and go via Manapullykavu temple to the Mission School junction. Now I found from the map that after the calicut road junction (NH213) if I take a left turn (Kunathurmedu) I can reach the Mission schol junction and this is probably a wider road, correct ?

Yes thats right

the manappullykavu road tends to get crowded as the private buses going to thrissur from palakkad and in the reverse direction take that route as well adding to the traffic.

Directions are fairly easy to follow, english boards at most places, there is one board right at the Mundur High School junction as well pointing to Parli(atleast it was there!)

re: Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

Few of my friends have taken the usual Kochi-Thrissur-Palghat-Coimbatore-Salem-Blore route and they keep asking me to avoid this route(specially Manuthy-Palghat which is really bad) since am planning to drive to blore during the first week of August.

Am really confused now. Should I take the risk and take this route or try some alternate routes. Since my car is running on low profile tires it will be really uncomfortable. This will definitely irritate my wifey.

Except for the stretch between Perumanallur and L&T Toll Gate near Coimbatore where the road work is going on, rest of the road is really great.

Even this stretch the road condition is not bad its just there are a lot of diversions due to the road work.

Bangalore to Perumanallur is the best to drive - even with my santro running on LPG I could easily maintain 90+kmph for long stretches.

I see that you didnt take the usual route. Is it longer than NH47? How is this route? Am planning to drive down next month.

Thrissur - Cochin is excellent. You can maintain an average of 100kmph till Aluva.

Naveen: after reading through this thread and input from my friend who visited this last week, I avoided NH 47 from Palakkad to Thrissur and took the other road and that worked out very well.

How is this route? Is it longer? The reason why I prefer the NH is because I can avoid the town traffic. Seeing your route, I fear it might take longer. Can you share your experience?
Sorry for many questions

Naveen - @Ranjitp1's post #243 has the alternate route which is a good option (if you want to go via Palakkad for food or take a break)

I also remember seeing another route being disucssed which is via Pollachi-Alathur-Pazhayannur, probably in this thread:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...erala-165.html

Hope this helps.

With both these routes you can avoid NH47 between Palakkad and Trichur.
