Any latest updates/suggestions on this stretch?

If this is the best route - any decent options around Kanakapura/Malavalli for breakfast or better to start after breakfast from Bangalore?
Currently, both the routes (Via Kanapaura and Via Mandya) have their own cons. So it is subjective to say which one is better. While road condition via Kanakapura (upto Kanakapura) is pretty bad, the usual Mysore road (via Mandya) has umpteen diversions due to road widening work, but the road is smooth and ample restaurant options.

You could go via one and return via the other, so that way you get a gist of both.

Kanakapura restaurant options - Hote Mandarathi and Chickoo farm, that's all.

Mysore road restaurant options - A lot of them.

Avoid Kanakapura Road. Bangalore to Kanakapura is a complete mess.

Thanks for the update @hydtraveller. Then will take NICE road to join the usual Mysore route via Ramanagara & Mandya.

I think you will be happier taking the route partially via the Mangalore highway - Bangalore-Tumkur Road-Nelamangala (turn left to Mangalore highway)-Bellur Cross-turn left towards Nagamangala-turn right at Srirangapatna where it merges with Bangalore-Mysore highway NH275 and then to Mysore. At the Mysore ring road junction (Columbia Asia), turn left and head towards Nanjangud.

Adds a few kilometres overall, but much more peaceful route that avoids the construction zones on NH 275.

See this (Driving between Bangalore and Mysore) thread for details

Thanks @NPV. Looks a good option, with the road widening works going on the regular stretch. Few extra kms is OK for me, if it's peaceful and relaxing to drive.

Forgot about the Peenya elevated flyover being closed for a week for urgent repairs, so you may want to take Magadi route to get to Kunigal and then the Mangalore highway to Bellur cross.

I am planning to travel to Masinagudi this week. Please update on the status of vaccination certificate/RT PCR report checking at the Karnataka-TN border.

Quick update on our Christmas morning trip to Coonoor from Bangalore via Masinagudi. Started from Residency Road at 6:10 am and caught Mysore Road. Stopped at an Adyar Anand Bhavan (about an hour away) for breakfast. Traffic was bad upfront and had become very dense post our breakfast halt. The diversions on Mysore Road were very frustrating. At Maddur, Google Maps directed us towards Malavalli. This route was a single carriageway but had very light traffic. However road surface, especially after Malavalli was poor. Nevertheless made good speed and rejoined a few km before Mysore. Was on a broad and lightly trafficked highway (I think the Mysore ring road) and joined NH766 a few km later. Lost about 20 minutes at the TN entry where they were checking cars - but for whatever reason, they waved me through without checks (had a TN entry pass, and perhaps they had seen the car number). The Masinagudi Ghat stretch was phenomenal and we were near Ooty by 1230

Thank you very much for the response. Which state was your vehicle registered in? Wondering if they are asking for things based on the state of registration. Also did you see people on bikes crossing the border? I also plan to cross the border around 1 PM.

I have traveled multiple times to TN since the start of COVID-19 without anyone even bothering to ask for anything. However I have put off travel to Masinagudi for almost an year because I keep hearing checking is stricter in Nilgiris.

My vehicle is MH registered but don’t think they were discriminating based on that.

Yes, there were a couple of bikers who went past the stationary queue of cars much to my irritation.

Apart from e-pass, is RTPCR report mandatory to cross from Karnataka to Tamilnadu (Ooty) or vice versa?

I called up Ooty tourism and Nilgiris district control room and based on what they said you need double vaccination certificate or RTPCR report at the minimum. However they did not sound very sure as to what will be asked at the checkpost. I assume you will be fine if everyone in the group is doubly vaccinated.

Thanks for information All adults in group are fully vaccinated , I just hope they don't ask RTPCR for kids.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Traveled from Bangalore to Theppakadu yesterday via Kanakapura-Malavalli-Mysore Ring Road-Gundlupet. Road upto Kanakapura was pretty bad, smooth upto Malavalli, from Malavalli potholes were patched for half the distance to Mysore but second half had some dangerous potholes for bike riders.

There was a long queue at Kakanallaha checkpost on both the sides. We were on two wheelers so no one asked for e-pass and someone asked if we were double vaccinated. No one checked anything. I think they were randomly stopping a few cars for checking luggage and were also checking documents. For now, double dose seems to be enough.
