Or Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Salem-Bhavani-Perindurai-Kangeyam-Dharapuram-Udumalpet-Marayoor-Munnar.

Its Nh7/Nh47 till Perindurai and there onwards state highway.
Udumalpet to Munnar is 90Km ghat section. Assign a minimum of three hours.
The drive passes through one of the most beautiful views.

I'm deciding between these routes :-

1. Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Thoppur (Divert towards Kumarapalayam) - Perundurai - Kangayam - Dharapuram - Udumalaipettai - Munnar

2. Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Salem - Dindigul - Theni - Munnar

3. Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Salem - Avinashi - Palladam - Udumalaipettai - Munnar

Any inputs? I leave tomorrow morning 4AM.
If you are leavin at 4am,then I'd recco Ampere's route.

If you are leaving later in the morning around 9-10,then I would recco option 2 as you wouldnt have to drive through the national park in the late evening hours.

The route covering,
Bangalore – Hosur – Krishnagiri – Dharmapuri – Thoppur – Mettur – Bhavani (Join NH47) – Perundurai – Chennimalai – Kangayam – Dharapuram – Udumalaipettai – Marayoor – Munnar
may work better.

+ 1 to what Ampere said. The drive from udumalaipettai to Munnar is a delight to the eyes and the ghats doesnt do any strain on the drive as well. Am sure you will enjoy the drive on this route.

Only point to note is that now I guess the 4L is complete all the way till Avinashi. Hence there is no need to deviate via Thoppur/Metur unless you want to visit the dam.

Thanks for the heads up guys!

I'll take the route through Perundurai if start early and make Salem in good time (Last time took 3 hours in bike, Car should take me a tad longer I suppose)

Else the Dindigul route and the Udumalapettai route on the way back!

God's Own Country... Here I come!

Have a nice drive! Do note once you cross Perindurai, food options are pretty limited. No good hotels. Some decent town hotels where you may find meals/curd rice for lunch!

Another very important point: NH47 goes outside Perindurai. A complete By-pass. To hit the Kangeyam road, you need to get off NH47 and drive about 2-4Km to actually hit Perindurai town from where you latch on to Kangeyam road.

@Ampere : Your tip saved me some precious kms. I took the following routes

Onward Journey -

Bangalore - Salem - Perundurai - Kangeyam - Dharapuram - Udumalaipettai - Marayoor - Munnar

Started at 5.15AM from Bangalore was in Munnar town at around 4.30PM, this is inclusive of all breakfast, lunch, tea, photography, pee breaks. There was just a small confusion regarding the route inside Udumalaipettai where we stopped for Lunch. As per the Odo clocked 49x Kms.

Return Journey -

Munnar - Devikulam - Bodinayakannur - Theni - Periyakulam - Batalagundu - Dindigul - Karur - Salem - Bangalore

Started late at about 12PM from Munnar and reached home in HSR Layout at 12AM, this is inclusive of all lunch, tea, dinner, photography, pee breaks. Luckily I reached NH7 at about 5PM so after dark driving was done comfortably on a 4 lane median separated highway. As per the odo clocked about 54x Kms.

It was raining only in a 40Kms radius of Munnar. Otherwise mostly dry.

I spotted the Perundurai exit in the nick of time, else I would have gone past it all the way till Avinashi!

I went at least 3 km ahead and had to come back! I was saved because I had marked Perindurai in my Garmin. Hence I knew for sure, that I had gone past.

The rain-radius seems to be apt.

"Get into the ring, enjoy the climate and come out!"
Perfect ! Because its that radius which is the most stunning.

Meanwhile I also did one more homework. The Perindurai/Dharapuram route was favoured, as the 4L was not complete.
Now that it is so, would it not be more logical to go all the way till Avinashi, then go via Tiruppur, Palladam, Gudimangalam and to Udumalpettai. Have folks tried this option?

The best route to go is Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Salem-Bhavani-Avinashi-Palladam-Udumalpettai-Munnar. Have been on this numerous times and with current road conditions this is the best.

There are two routes to go from Avinashi to Palladam. One goes thru Tirupur, one bypasses it. The latter easily saves half an hour.

Last time I did Blore-Munnar in 7 odd hours following the above route. Cheers!
