R.D.X (Robert Dony Xavier) - Netflix : 4/5

Surprise hit of Onam 2023 , even more surprisingly release in Netflix yesterday night (still running in theaters with decent occupancy). Missed this in theaters, it was a pure theater movie.

Action packed, but ground to earth for most of the part. It's a movie which stood out in the sea of feel good and slow thrillers of Malayalam industry.

Worth a try for action movie lovers. We'll directed and have good action choreography too.

Antony Varghese (Pepe) is back to his safe zone after his failed stint at feel good movies. This guy got good screen presence and is an action movie material (need to work on his body though)
Shane is good but Neeraj impressed me the most with his Nunchuck work.

Being a huge fan of Babu Antony (the original Malayalam action superstar of 90's), the 2 mins at climax was pure goosebumps

Por Thozhil, Tamil. Sony LIV

I didn’t know this was released on OTT and chanced upon it.

What a movie! Absolutely fantastic. Every one has done their bit. I’ll give it a 4.5/5.

Nalla Nilavulla Rathri

The Regional movies thread!-1.jpg

This is so similar to a famous Hollywood slasher movie series (not disclosing as it might spoil the viewing experience). Good cast but wasted.

Rating - 1/5 (Available on Amazon Prime, but think they took it off now). Can be avoided.

Pappachan Olivilaanu

The Regional movies thread!-2.jpg

Poor story and absolutely unnecessary to be made as a movie. Poor acting by Saiju. He's trying a different style of acting and is evident in some of his recent movies and it's really bad. I stopped the movie midway.

Rating - 1/5 (Available on Saina Play). Can be avoided.

Voice of Sathyanathan

The Regional movies thread!-3.jpg

This was a decent watch. Should say that this is Dileep's best work in the last 2-3 years. Although it's a copy of his old movies, it was entertaining. Siddique was really good in this one. Started off well but the second half was a bit boring.

Rating - 3/5 (Available on Manorama Max). One time watch.

RDX

The Regional movies thread!-4.jpg

I never had any expectation before it's release but was quite surprised as it turned out to be the best release this festive season. So was eagerly waiting but turned out to be a decent watch. Decent acting by all but it was the climax that was the highlight for me.

Rating - 3/5 (Available on Netflix). Recommended.

Yes, it had potential, but lost in making. Felt like the director was clueless on how to take it to next level.

This was one of the worst movies I've watched in recent times. Waste of time.

Managed to finish this over 4 days
I felt it was an extremely poor attempt and it was sad to see Dileep struggling with comedy (which used to be his forte).

We watched this over the weekend and while it was a decent one-time watch, wasn't too impressed. Good to see Babu Antony in the movie, although i was hoping to see more of him in that role.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Kannur Squad - 4.8/5

Very rarely watch Malayalam movies, was dragged by a colleague and boy am I glad! This movie is a masterpiece, its cinematography is something Bollywood (Tollywood & Kollywood too for that matter) should really learn from.

The movie is very gripping and you really feel for all the characters in the movie and the locations are amazing. The cops feel like real humans with real limitations - both personal & bureaucratic - not the badass cops from the Singham series or Tamil/Telugu movies. Locations are well-made too, the UP village really feels like a UP village (and not a caricature).

There is some violence during the robbery scenes, so ensure viewer discretion - especially those who are squeamish (like me). Also, due to the violence, I wouldn't recommend taking children to the movie (it's rated PG13 in Bahrain).

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched couple of movies on Amazon prime

Jailer (Tamil) - 2/5 - Average. Rajni and Vinayakan (as a villain) were good.

Maheshum Maruthiyum (Malayalam) 1/5 - Nothing good about the movie except the car.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (Prime / Tamil with Eng Subs)

Saw this beautiful movie on Prime just now.

An excellent tale about a landlord, his driver and their greedy attachment to a Premier Padmini car that has been kept with the landlord as safe keeping by a friend of the family.

The landlord wants to learn to drive the car so that he can take his wife to the temple on their wedding anniversary. The driver avoids teaching the landlord because he doesn't want to lose his job. A scheming daughter is thrown in too for the drama. But it is the wife, played ably well by Tulasi, who steals the show in this family drama.

Vijay Sethupathi stars as the driver and Jayaprakash as the landlord.

Don't miss this lovely movie.

Watched Neymar (Malayalam) on Disney Hotstar
Rating: 2.5/5
First half is very good, but in the second half it turned in to a different movie and dragged a bit. Mom struggled a bit to follow during second half as most of the dialogues are in Tamil. Overall decent feel good movie especially for an animal lover.

Lucky Man - Tamil

The Regional movies thread!-dew._v1_fmjpg_ux1000_.jpg

Started off well, but began to loose steam as it progressed. Second half plot didn't even make sense and was totally unnecessary. Could have stayed with the original plot ad storyline which would have made it interesting. Yogi Babu was decent but not good as his previous movies.

Rating - 2/5 (Available on Amazon Prime). Can be avoided or just watch the first half.

Kannur Squad - 4.5/5 (@ PVR- Blr )

A captivating drama that follows a police officer and his team on a mission to capture a criminal gang across the country, demonstrating their resilience amidst professional uncertainty.

As a build up to the climax the second half is brilliant.

The nine-member (real) Kannur Squad also congratulated the crew and appreciated Mammootty who played the role of ASI George Martin, the head of the Kannur Squad.

The Real Kannur Squad- a team of police officers who were part of the Kannur Squad, a crime investigation unit formed by the former Kannur SP S. Sreejith IPS.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Kannur Squad- Malayalam-Theater Watch

As mentioned above, based on an actual police team. Very good movie. Starts slowly with the squad solving a couple of cases, their personal situation etc. Then moves into the main investigation. It is a realistic movie which showcases the team working hard to move ahead in the investigations through painstaking police work in spite of facing a lot of obstacles. Well acted and beautifully shot, totally engages you in the ride.

Typically such realistic investigations is a little hard on the viewer. As you see them facing one obstacle after the other and slowly moving ahead. You typically do not expect any major heroics to come in. But in this one, what the makers have smartly done is inserted a couple of mass Mammooty moments. Not too much, but just at the right time and just enough- just as you wonder- 'This is an impossible situation how do they come out-You are almost wishing for the mass avatar from Mammootty, but you are also thinking, 'won't happen, this is not that kind of a movie' - and there it happens.

Mammooty does a fantastic job as usual. He has done innumerable cop movies but still manages to make each one look different.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Kannur Squad

Agree with most of the above-mentioned points of the movie. A very good one-time watch. The only point I want to make is that the last chase sequence was more of a mass move than reality and it was not needed to film it that way. Especially considering the overall tone of the movie.

Mammooty again shows his class not only in acting but also in the action scenes. One often forgets that he is 72 years old.

I feel that more than Mammooty, this is a great moment for brothers Roby (Debut Director) and Rony (Screenplay). Their father was a producer and produced a flop movie with Mammooty in 1989 and was forced to leave Kerala as they lost all their investments. This is sort of a redemption for the sons to cast the same actor and win accolades!

When it comes to realistic cop movies, I think Abrid Shine set a gold standard with Action hero Biju . I feel nothing can top it.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Watched Saptha Saagaradaache (Kannada). A good movie with a different story and great acting by everyone. The only not so good scenes for me were the jail ones.

I liked the background score very much. Looking forward to the side B story.

Also watched Khufiya, its ok to be watched at home. Some amateurish depictions for spy movie doesn't help.
