Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched the movie recently and could not echo the thoughts better than what you have mentioned in your review. Very glad to see Kannada cinema sticking to the realities rather than fake heroism and over the top songs and dances and fights. This felt very close to watching Malayalam movies of recent times where the locations are real and actors are pretty down to earth with natural flow to their acting. Wholeheartedly agree with the 4/5 rating too and eagerly waiting for Side B.

If you have had a separation from someone you loved in the past, this movie is not to be missed.

Jailer : Super Stupid Movie

Movies like Pathan and Jawan are 75% stupid. Take that 75% from both of them and you get a 150% stupid movie like Jailer.

Nothing in the movie makes sense.

The bad guy has built an empire of extreme power by stealing old idols. Because drugs and other mafia is too small.

There is a heavy dose of torture. Looks like someone spent time to watch youtube videos on Mexican cartels and decided to go ahead with acid baths.
Lots of dead people. But no body disposal crews anywhere. No police anywhere. No sense anywhere.

The only redeeming character is the director of that movie within this movie. If the lead actress falls for the balding overweight middle aged guy...it gives hope for balding overweight middle aged guys like me. That and that alone is the only scene I believe is based on a distinct level of possibility and everything else is outlandish beyond everything else.

Disclaimner: Long winded repetitive review because I need to wash my brain with some acid to make it normal after watching this.

Why didn't you post this a week ago? I would have spent the 2 and a half hours doing something else...

Before watching movies like these, we have to leave our brains at home!
(saves you the trouble of washing it later!!)

PS - I am a Rajni fan, even before he was a super star.... and can't understand the hype around this movie.

Medium Spicy (Amazon prime) 3.5/5
The Regional movies thread!-medium_spicy.jpg
Watched this Marathi movie. A very different experience and direction from the regular bunch. Quite liked the plot. Some lines are witty and very entertaining. But overall it's very slow.
What I liked the most is Sai's acting. She was brilliant in the role, near perfect accent of a Tamilan speaking Marathi. Also Radhika Apte in her short role was brilliant. Lalit Prabhakar in the lead role did good too.

Roundal on Prime 3/5

The lead actor Bhausaheb Shinde has his own audience. His intense acting suits the role.
It depicts how this system, middlemen, politicians loot farmer and his revolt and revenge.

I had just finished that movie and posted.

After a long time, home alone with full control of TV. So binge watching movies.

Mark Anthony: Decent movie, could have been so much better if it was not so loud and garish. The story has a lot of potential but is let down by its extreme dramatization. Ok for a one time watch especially if you dont mind skipping a few parts.

Lucky Man: Very good movie. Good story line with regular actors who play very true to their characters. A ligt hearted movie and I enjoyed this sweet movie.

Rajni movies are commercial masala movies. Logic is not something that one expects to find in such movies. What one hopes for is the below
1. As much as footage of the Thalaiva to showcase his "flair"
2. Not too much illogical nonsense in the rest of the movie to overpower pt1

Trust me there are movies where pt2 >>> pt1. E.g Lingaa, Annaatthe, Baba in my opinion, others could add more.

Also, last but not the least, Rajni movies are best experienced in movie theatres. The more rudimentary, the more better (only scenario where a single theatre beats the heck out of an imax/multiplex). Watching it over OTT at home will not give you what you expect.

I grew up in Chennai.

But this movie was hopeless by almost all standards.

Continuing my movie binge, this movie was the best so far.

Kasargold
Its a Malayalam movie but I watched it with Tamil language.
Excellent movie with very interesting plot twists and turns.
Fast paced and excellent screenplay.

Now please go an watch this new one in town.

Leo - 3/5

Now when it comes to digesting Vijay movies, it is like anything will be better than Beast. Wholesome entertainment if you are a Vijay "fan", no worries. For others, it is an OK watch - good direction and cinematography with good visuals in Himachal Pradesh and fair amount of suspense. As if it is not bloody sweet and similar to Vikram movie, they even dared to use the BGM's of that movie in this. Oh is it because this is part of LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe)?. Villain castings are done well and hence not boring.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Saw a few movies this and last weekend

1. Mark Antony

Over the top loud with some wierd acting accompanied by weird hair styling and costumes. The movie belongs to S J Surya for his acting. I wouldnt recommend the movie although the concept was interesting.

Rating: 2/5

2. RDX Malayalam

I thought the movie will have a lot of martial arts as the reviews suggested but wasnt even close to anything related to that. The action scenes although were good, I am surprised this is a surprise hit this season. Recommend for one time watch if nothing else available.

Rating: 2.5/5

3. Kasargold Malayalam

Nothing to write about the movie. Old story in a new bottle. The climax could have been made better.

Rating: 2/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Leo (Tamil) - 4/5

Leo (Hindi) - 2.5/5

So, I watched Leo twice, the second time in Hindi since my Gujarati friend wanted to watch the movie in Hindi.

Unlike the reviews, I genuinely liked the movie. I couldn't stand some of Vijay's recent movies but really loved him in Leo - his acting was a masterclass! The raw emotion was really something & the chemistry with Trisha was excellent, however, they messed this up in the Hindi dubbed version due to the terrible voice acting. Also, lots of easter eggs for LCU fans. The weak point was Sanjay Dutt whose dubbing was terrible in Tamil but was ironically really good in Hindi since it was his original voice (while everyone else's were terrible).

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Leo-Tamil-Vijay

I liked Leo. It is much much better than several of his recent outings. Finally moves away from the very standard template of Vijay movies. Good to see him as a family man with a grown son and daughter. There is a even a reference to him as a 'middle aged man' in the movie, which is generally unthinkable.

Of course, it is a mindless mass entertainer movie and have to approach it with that in mind. The good thing about Vijay is that-while his screen presence has never been a question, unlike many of the other superstars, he still dances and fights extremely well and also does the subtle humor well. I maybe wrong, but I think maybe only Allu Arjun can pull of all of these convincingly today. The stunt scenes here- some of them are too long, but all of them done extremely well. Vijay also even gets a chance to actually emote. He has always had a good chemistry with Trisha and it was true in this one also. Trisha could have got a bit more to do thought. .

The weakest part is the flashback and then whole explanation around it, here it falls into a template Vijay style-Guess Lokesh did not have a choice in this.

The Kerala craze for Vijay is well know. There were 100's of 4am shows- All houseful and the film apparently earned 12 cr on the first day. In comparison, the top earner before this was KGF2 and the Mohanlal movie Odiyan with around 7 Crore. Also getting close to 50 cr from Kerala by the end of the holiday weekend today. Just to put that in perspective, in the history of Malayalam Cinema, there are are around 7-8 movies that have grossed 50 crore from Kerala in the full lifetime run. That is the level of craze for Vijay.

Was disappointed to see Malayalam Star Babu Antony-who was an yesteryear star and was/is a martial arts expert, relegated to a side kick role with nothing to do. When I saw him, expected at least one fight scene with Vijay.

Rating: 3.5/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Leo - Tamil 2.5/5

My Brother in law who's a die hard Vijay fan, pulled me to watch this movie. It's a mixed bag for me

I would summarise it as a movie with very good first half with a bad second half

+ves
  • Vijay's acting for a change. Lately I was getting pissed off with his so called swag and stuff. The first half of this movie had some good performance from him
  • Cinematography - very well shot for most of the parts
  • Action - very good for most of the parts
  • VFX for the hyenna scene
  • Performance of Sandi in the negative role (first half)
-ves
  • Usual Vijay mannerisms made a come back in late second half
  • Not judging, but what's with Vijay's hairstyle? I found it totally unnecessary
  • Villains were not very convincing - waste of opportunity I would say
  • Weak story line
  • Desperate effort to connect to LCU
  • Laughable cameo of Anurag Kashyap
  • The car chase fight scene
  • The annoying eagle effect during the godown fight scene

This must be the best Vijay movie in terms of his acting skills in recent times, although his usual mannerisms creep in towards the climax. The first half is terrific with the cafe fight scene setting the tone for the movie, while the second half could have been better.

The cast keeps getting bigger in LCU movies but lot of actors (Anurag Kashyap, Trisha or Arjun) are being wasted in small roles, the premise of a much bigger role in future movies holds good though.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Any bhpian reviews of the Tamil biopic of the Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan - 800?

Heard it got released a few months ago but didn't get a lot of positive reviews. Also given the political angle around it, this movie had been in the making for several years but had been delayed. Apparently Vijay Sethupathi was supposed to don the main role but he pulled out. And post that none of the south based actors were ready to take that up.

Multiple folks have mentioned that this is one of Vijay's better (if not one of the best) acting but the movie storyline is extremely confusing / bane. Good to see a +ve review (somewhat atleast).
