Yeah, seeing this too. Including a few profiles below if it helps narrow down the problem. Maybe something to do with the image upload system.

Thanks for pointing out, I was stuck at this point and feeling quite foolish that I couldn't even manage to update an avatar!

Definitely feel you here. In fact several months back this was suggested here and we did make the change.

However, for some reason it really affected Google's affinity for our News articles (esp on the Discover feed) - and hence we had to roll back the change

Thanks for pointing this out! It's a bug due to some other recent image resizing / watermarking changes.

We'll have it resolved this week & update here.

Will start to get a bit too complex.

I think of the "Thanks" button as saying...

...Thanks for sharing this useful information
...Thanks for helping me /other readers
...Thanks for entertaining me with this funny post
...Thanks for sharing a sentiment that resonates with me
...Thanks for sharing a valid alternate viewpoint (even though I may not totally agree)
...Thanks for having the courage to share something personal/human

IIRC years ago we did try out "WTB" somewhere, and it was not very successful. WTB usually ends up just becoming a sea of unfulfilled requests.

Generally - people who have something to sell don't waste a lot of time looking for ONE person who wants to buy it. They are happier devoting that time to just listing their product and then waiting for connects to come to them.

Yes, we did think of this and wanted to include it -- but the verification of the Team-BHP user-id provided being valid was the hard part!

In the next Classifieds update, we'll try and work this in

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

Can we please do a global find+replace for wrongly spelled car brand/model names like Maruthi -->> Maruti and request members not to change spelling of the "names" according to what we pronounce.

It impacts search result for real name in global search as well search within a thread.

Searching for "Maruthi" shows massive 1366 threads (including this one even before this post) of search results and 3 thread titles on Team-bhp.

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

I feel that a well supported app should be developed for iOS and android.
I did see that it was tried before but I do personally feel that maybe it should be looked into again as an option.

On mobile devices. I guess an android/iOS app would better the user experience for mobile users.

I was thinking about this lately. Right now I have a chrome shortcut to the team-bhp home page on my phone’s home screen. It would be convenient browsing the platform on a mobile app.

But, as someone who has worked on mobile apps as well as web apps in the past, I tried to develop some perspective of how the forum must have been designed. Unless the forum internals were refreshed in the recent years, I would expect to see a multi-instance monolith running the forum. I would imagine such an addition of mobile apps will be challenging since the current backend may not have adequate segregation in the system to plug in a separate mobile app.

Then comes the part about developing and maintaining Mobile Apps:
Unless we have progressive web apps in the first place, maintaining and running Android/iOS applications comes at an effort. The ever changing landscape of Android and iOS apps is always in flux for the developers. Combined with that the variety of screen sizes and aspect ratios and the security patches etc, all of it combines into segregating the website into separate chunks running the user interface and database.

I think there is also going to be steep cost of maintaining and developing dedicated mobile apps if we go that way.

Question to the mods: What stack and architecture is the forum currently based on?

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

1. Can we allow mentions ? I.e. I could say hey @GTO in a post and GTO gets a notification e.g, "You have a new mention" just like "Your post has been quoted"

2. Can we auto-resize pictures rather than forcing uploaders to scale them down ? I.e. if someone uploads a 7mb+ file, can tbhp backend scale them down and store ? It's too difficult to scale so many images down before uploading

Re: Suggestions for Team-BHP from Team-BHPians

Many of us who are brought up in middle class family, who own a new car (maybe a Maruti or Hyundai) but wish that in future we could own a Mercedes or BMW, can we have some senior members create something for such people.

You know there are times when people can afford a 20-30L used German but the thought (maintenance would be very High, and no guidance or known mechanics) we fail to take that first step towards premium brands and end up with Korean SUV's.

I see GTO mentioning in many posts that look out for good used car, if only we could have someone helping junior members and guide them would be great.

I know its kind of controversial as many would not like to take up that ownership and what if things go south with the decision you referred to.

But just wanted to put this up so that if there are more like minded people we can have more suggestions and come up with something.

This was fixed early last week.

Request users who have faced the issue of the Team-BHP watermark appearing on your avatar pics to please re-upload your avatar

I definitely feel you... and the mods spend a LOT of time ensuring that Make + Model (and correct spellings) are used on all new threads / posts.

However, when it comes to global find and replace.... that's one of the scariest / most dangerous tools IMO

Will see what I can do about those 13xx threads. Thanks for pointing it out.

We did have iOS and Android apps, but quite frankly it was very difficult to maintain and keep all versions up to date.

I'd love to introduce a PWA as an in-between solution, but that's still a while away on the roadmap.

LAMP.

On mobile devices:
1) The sharing feature is usually baked in to the OS and app -- eg. Chrome's share feature.
2) Small screen = real estate it at an extreme premium, so to have another set of "share" buttons does get a bit redundant.

If we do have some sort of additional collapsible menu in the future, we might include some share buttons there.

Much requested, and definitely considering this... however, it's useless unless it's also paired with an updated notification system. So they will ideally go hand in hand.

7MB per image is a fairly generous upload size, but I understand there will be fringe cases. However, there are other limitations (eg. Cloudflare upload limits) that are simpler to solved with resizing done on the users' side in these fringe cases.

How are you doing it?

It's extremely simple & fast if you use softwares that do batch resizing.

The Windows Image Resizer PowerToy is probably the quickest / easiest.

See this post (Uploading photographs directly to Team-BHP)

Not sure I understand clearly, but do you mean something like:

A guide to buying your first luxury car as a middle-class Indian ?

Re: Incorrect Unread Thread List?

In the recent past, am experiencing glitches in the unread thread list which comes up with 'User CP'.

It used to be quite accurate earlier, BUT in the recent past it is serving me only few hours worth of past threads, when I haven't visited TBHP for couple of days.

Has any others experienced this behaviour? Please advise.

To Be Honest just had something on my mind which I put up and open for suggestions/corrections from other members.

Thinking from middle class perspective whose entire extended Family/Friends doesn't have a luxury car, can he take the first step for used luxury car in the bracket of 15-30L.

What are the pain points that they should look out for?

Any references from existing members who are aware of genuine dealers and mechanics in their city.

Genuine Dealer and mechanic is like Half the battle won, there are many listings online but how many are not fake or accidental cars is something that no one knows.
