Its still early days for Abhishek Sharma but I hope he comes good & stays effective. Added advantage with him is that he call slip in a few overs as well, something which the Indian Team lacks.

I think with consistently performing in IPL he has already proved that he has the temperament and we really need an opener who can score quickly. Let's hope he keeps on performing, a left right opening combination is perfect.

However, my point was that what point this series brings home. Not only feels redundant but also irrelevant. Hardcore cricket lovers may disagree.
BCCI would have done it if in case India loses the Cup so people can rejoice by defeating Zimbabwe

Ishan isn't serious about his international career. So why should selectors bother when there is so much talent available.

Jaiswal is a handy bowler too. Both can provide the few overs when needed. Ideally these 2 should open with Gill at 3. Gill isn't a natural ball basher at top and needs time to get in.

Edit - In fact with SKY at 3 and Hardik at 4 with Rinku at 5 I don't see why we should play Gill at all..

I don't think T20 is Gill's best format. He's more suited to ODIs & Tests. Unfortunately he's the Captain on this tour so now there will be a compulsion to include him in future T20 series! Infact players like Ruturaj Gaikwad & Sai Sudarshan should not be selected in T20s at all. They aren't bad but there are better players at the top. Ruturaj only scores at a quicker rate once he is set. I hope the Selectors do away with Pant for T20s till the Champions Trophy & let him concentrate on ODI's & Tests. Samson can be given his chances in all these T20s with Jurel as backup.

Gill is our replacement for Kohli now . But agree to your point, he is more suited for ODIs.

Re: The Cricket Thread

I was trying to create the T20 WC 2026 squad and holy Vishnu, it is tough.

With three slots opening up for grabs in the national T20 team, it'll be a race in the new brigade. I think the T20 WC 2026 team will be a mix of the squad below (since 2026 is in India, it'll definitely be only two seamers with Hardik being the third):

1. Jaiswal
2. opening batter
3. Sky
4. ................(wk)
5. Rinku
6. batter/ all rounder
7. Hardik(c)
8. Axar
9. Kuldeep
10. Bumrah
11. Arshdeep

Bold: Almost confirmed

Pool to pick from/ Reserves:
Fast bowlers: Siraj/ Mukesh/ Avesh/ Prasidh/ Mayank Yadav(?)/ Harshal Patel/ Natarajan
Spinners: Chahal/ Bishnoi/ Varun Chakravarthy (we only have these???)
Wicket keepers: Samson, Jurel/ Pant/ IK (?)/ Jitesh
Batters: Iyer, Gill/ Abhishek Sharma/ Sai/ Patidar/ Tilak Verma/ Venkatesh Iyer
All-rounders: Dube, Ruturaj, Riyan, Washington, Nitish Rana, Nitish Reddy

There is no dearth of batsman in our country & most of the slots will get filled in. Its really the bowlers which we need to worry about. As we saw in the WT20 Finals, its all Bumrah or nothing. Arshdeep did well & Siraj is not too bad but Mukesh / Avesh ,etc really worry me.

When did Ruturaj & Riyan become all-rounders?! Washington Sundar can be an ideal option provided he works on his hitting abilities & stays fit.

I think the boys from 2024 under-19 world cup team will also start displaying their mettle and we'll have a bigger pool to choose from like Raj Limbani, Saumy Pandey, Musheer khan, Sachin Dhas, etc. Hopefully it's not that tougher when it actually is time to pick the team.

Re: The Cricket Thread

This new man Abhishek Sharma seems to be a power hitter and not a sweet timer of the ball. I heard commentators saying that he is trained by Yuvraj Singh. His timing seems off most of the times, his body balance is off, tough times ahead for him.

Pant is most likely to be the selectors' choice for wicketkeeper in the near future, unless Jurel shows some outstanding performance in the current series.

I agree that we should keep an eye on our bowlers and manage their workload efficiently, especially once we find someone like Bumrah.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Our fast bowling attack in the ongoing Zimbabwe series is depressing to put it mildly.

Avesh, Mukesh and Khalil - I mean, seriously is this our pace bowling bench?

Well not exactly.
Our first choice fast bowlers are:
1. Bumrah
2. Shami - currently injured
3. Arshdeep
4. Siraj

Then backups:
1. Prasidh - I think currently injured
2. Mukesh Kumar
3. Avesh Khan
4. Harshal Patel (purple Cap-IPL'24)
5. T. Natarajan

Other options:
1. Mayank Yadav (if he's fit enough)
2. Sandeep Sharma
3. Yash Thakur
4. Tushar Deshpande

The thing is Bumrah has set the standard so high that the moment you compare anyone else with him, they all look school level. But that's OK. Bumrah is an exceptional talent and pretty much the best in the world. If India can produce even half a good bowler every 2 years, we'll win most trophies.

Sadly, that is our bench strength with a bit of experience! Do not know how Khaleel came into the picture but over the past year or so Mukesh Kumar & Avesh have consistently played in the XI.

Was surprised Deshpande was chosen ahead of Harshit Rana! Everyone has high expectations from Mayank Yadav on the basis of 2 1/2 IPL games. And most seem to have forgotten Umran Malik. Selectors will need to zero in on someone as our Seamers will need to be rotated in Australia considering we're playing 5 Test Matches.

Re: The Cricket Thread

T20 world cup is done so I am not at all bothered out what team is played now. Focus should now be on upcoming BGT at end of year and Champions trophy which we still don't know if India will participate if ICC is adamant on Pakistan full hosting and not a hybrid model.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Just saw a note in Cricinfo that Gautam Gambhir has been appointed head coach of the Indian men's team until the end of 2027 World Cup. I don't see that anywhere else though.
