Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

It has been raining almost non-stop since 9 pm yesterday, though the intensity has been lower after around midnight.

Roads that usually get water-logged with heavy rains might be a cause for concern.

Can well believe it. The intensity of this particular cloudburst was astonishing, and we were struggling to manage overflowing balconies plus help lower-lying neighbours who were getting flooded out.

Check traffic & weather conditions carefully before venturing out

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Wonders of wonders yesterday!!! Slightly off topic here but the thunderstorm yesterday night would have rendered any city's electric supply non functional. But the brave folk at BESCOM kept the flow of current on throughout the rain spell. Seems they have solved some sort of chink in their armor. From previous experience, even an appearance by the clouds was enough to lose power

Car stuck in waterlogged road (NDTV.com report)

The report includes a video of the car stuck with two wheels in the air.

Not for us. Entire night we were without electricity. Only restored by around 9 am - This is hennur area, more like Kannur village area. Perhaps the technology has not reached Bescom Rural

Hopefully it will trickle down in the next few decades. We know how quickly the guv here works (Koramangala flywork is a working proof ). I do think they actually forgot to flip the switch off and the infra somehow survived.

Rant Alert
I am so used to such scenes now that it comes as a surprise for me to find a decent stretch of road especially in East Bangalore. In all other cities across India there is a push to improve the existing infrastructure but in Bangalore it runs in the other direction. One good road today (if it exists) will be dug up the next day, continue to be dug up for few months(if not years), one layer of tar only on the dug up portion after many follow ups by the residents which shall be washed away duly in one decent spell of rain OR will become a deathtrap without any streetlights and water logging. Welcome to our city - Namma Bengaluru. BBMP and all civic authorities of this city must be sued for endangering the lives of the common folks like us for their greed and unquenching thirst for corruption. And don't get me started on ORR mess ...

OT:

True, BESCOM seems to have improved a little over the last 2 weeks or so. Earlier, the enjoyment of even light showers would come with the frustration of not having electricity for the duration of the rain , but recently they seem to have finally woke up from slumber. Hope it extends to all areas of the city.

Their BESCOM Mithra App also seems to escalate complaints a bit faster.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Any updates on the Bellary road and onwards to BIAL ? Read about water logging from the downpour last night and looks like we're in for some more rain today as well.

In my observation, bad roads combined with water-logging is only one part of the problem.

The other reason which leads to such incidents is the impatience of some people, where they want to get ahead as fast as possible even in those conditions. In the process, instead of slowly following the vehicles ahead (which would be safer), they go to the side and sometimes get trapped in a drain or a big crater.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

New towing guidelines are being prepared by the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP). It will be tabled before the government for its approval.

Brother, are you new to namma Bengaluru? The way they operate is simple :

1. Election approaching, local Corporator/MLA (MPs don't give a hoot!) nudges BBMP to tar the roads in his constituency
2. Election over, BBMP suddenly vanishes, worst than those who ghost people on Tinder
3. BWSSB waits for this opportunity to locate a clean, well tarred road and swoops in for the kill - erm Dig!
Dig Dig Dig
4. BWSSB leaves a mess, public gets annoyed, complain to local corporator. 5. Suddenly a guy shows up with a tractor full of debris/cement and a jugaad fill up is done
6. KPTCL/BESCOM now step in. The soil have been made loose by the BWSSB diggers, lets put in some cables. Less effort to Dig.
7. Repeat of Complaints & Step 5
8. After a lot of threats, Janaagraha, Twitter, public shaming, some poor folks breaking limbs/losing lives, TV9 drama, Vatal Nagaraj Dharna, we will finally see a single coat of black top
9. Damn! it Rained

As they say in Bengaluru, "Swalpa adjust maadi saar"

For those who have won the Bangalore Lottery, they also get the bonus of a Flyover and the bumper prize is Namma Metro!

I have also seen a further step in the cycle.
4a. BWSSB digs, adds pipes and leaves a total mess. Local corporator fixes the road in collusion with the contractor.
4b. BWSSB comes back with modified pipes saying the ones put earlier were of incorrect size. A perfectly tarred road is dug up yet again and this time is left in a sorry state till next election
This was an actual situation on Doddakamanhalli Main road near Gottigere.

If 15 years is a timeline for a newbee in Bangalore, than I am certainly new. But I do get your point, you added more colour to the points I missed. Certainly appreciated and hope someone listens to our rants.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Has Metro doomed critically needed Flyovers/Underpasses in Whitefield area ?

My thought is how the Metro route alignment in the Whitefield area seems to have doomed critically needed road infrastructure (flyovers/under passes) at busy junctions in Whitefield area, namely Graphite India junction, Big Bazaar Junction and the Hope Farm junction. (Pictures attached - Red boxes indicate potential Flyovers/Underpasses)

Graphite India junction, Big Bazaar Junction : These 2 junctions are "T shaped" junctions and the Metro has hogged center of the road to take the turn at the junction effectively blocking any possibility of an underpass or a flyover at the junction.

Hope Farm junction : This is a 4 way junction with the Metro taking a turn and hogging 2 of the roads at right angles to each other and also occupying the center of the road. This again seems to rule out a flyover/underpass. This junction is very congested and sometimes takes upto 15 minutes to get through (next Silk Board junction in the making ?)

I hope I am wrong and the city planners have thought about these - if not, Whitefield area will be choking in traffic very soon.
