Help appreciated

I am sorry for the late update. The noise I mentioned was within my alternator bearing getting busted. The FSS guy at Vecto Motors told me that I need to recondition it or else the expensive option (on comparative basis) is replacement. In either way I only get 6 months warranty. But the latter was more than enough recommended the guy.

It cost me Rs.~7500.

Re: What's that sound?

Folks,

Last year, I got the front windshield of my All New Honda City replaced. After 3-4 months, I started hearing squeaking noise inside the cabin whenever I drove on rough roads and over potholes which only got louder by the time.

It has been 2 scheduled services now even after which the technicians at the service center were not able to make out where the noise was coming from. They somehow managed to convince me that they had done away with the issue by providing additional padding around the dashboard. However, the noise came back 2-3 days later and after thorough analysis by myself, I finally found out that it was coming from the upper side of the front windshield where the glass sits exactly on the rim and I even noticed that the glass actually moves up and down when pushed with fingers from inside. The funny thing is that the noise goes off whenever it rains and comes back again when it's dry making me think that it may be due to water settling on the rubber padding or the sealent.

I have now booked an appointment at the bodyshop for tomorrow and need few tips/advise from you so that I can take them to the technician in nailing this issue once for all.

Appreciate your inputs incase any of you have gone through the same issue.

Thanks,
Kiran

Re: What's that sound?

Hey Kiran TP,

I think the sound is made by a small air pocket being formed in the space between the wind-shield rubber beading & the metal frame of the car, when the car is moving. The most hassle free & inexpensive way of getting rid of it will be probably by filling some wind-shield sealant or m-seal in the gap as taking out the entire wind-shield again will be risky and if if they manage to take it out well, the cost of fixing it will be high. If done with some skill & care, the finish & aesthetics should not be an issue.

Regards,
Saket

Re: What's that sound?

Wanted to share the good news that I finally got my windshield re-fixed at the workshop by only paying Rs 990 for the labour. They have done a good job this time by neatly applying the sealant and rubber padding accurately ensuring that there is no scope for any loose ends.

I also verified that there is no more rattling noise inside the cabin and I can happily drive now without getting frustrated

Did they not charge you for the sealant? The sealants used for fixing windshields are expensive.

Nope. Initially they called me up and asked me to pay 3.5K (includes sealant, rubber and labour) for doing the entire job. However, I asked the technician to put me to his manager after which I was able to convince him to get it done without having to pay for anything except labour.

I had to explain him that it was a mistake on their part in doing a shabby job while fixing my windshield last year and that I had revisited them twice with the complaint of rattling noise inside the cabin which they claimed to be coming from the dashboard so the manager had no answers for that

Re: What's that sound?

Hi, I have an innova thats done roughly 90K kms. Now a days just about every now and then I hear a sound as if a stone is hitting above the tyre, something similar to what you hear when you go over a road that has freshly laid tar. But when I do get these sounds, there is no freshly laid tar nor any stone on the road (thats what i think). What could this sound be? By the way this comes only on the rear tyres.

Re: What's that sound?

I have a two-yer old Wagon R. I always keep the air circulation closed (for the AC fan blower). Today I opened it for a while and since then whenever I close the circulation, I notice pronounced blower sound (higher than the normal noise it makes), irrespective of the AC on or off. However, if I close the circulation, the noise reduces (although it is still prominent). I inspected and observed that the sound is coming from the motor (?) that is below the glovebox. Can you guys please help at diagnosing the problem.

Re: What's that sound?

I have an almost 6 year old WagonR Duo. It has run approximately 45k.
There is no weird sound coming when I take it in the morning to my office.
There is none such when I start back in the evening as well.
On the way from office I go to a gym. I workout for about an hour and may be a bit more.

I get into the car ,start it and along with the engine the sound starts - Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
This mostly goes away as soon as I engage 3rd gear(not instantly). The sound comes in with and without AC being on. No warning lights. This is happening everyday for the past one week.
Planning to take it to service center this weekend but before that would like to know what this can be

Its time to get all the belts checked. the culprit could be the alternator belt.
the non occurrence in the mornings and the evenings could be that the engine has fully cooled down hence the belt has contracted and grips well, and once you drive to the gym the engine warms up and by the time you are back the engine has not cooled down completely leaving the belt expanded and a bit loose which causes it to slip and hence squeal.

Try and localize it.
Put a screwdriver to the casing, and the thick end to your ear. sort if a rudimentary stethoscope. See what part is causing it.
Also, when the sound is present, pour a little bit of water on the belt. If it abates for even a few seconds, there you go.
Although, by the volume, it seems to be a pulley or bearing.

Re: What's that sound?

Thats a good trick, I will try that. The drive belt noise would usually go away when you accelerate or atleast there is a change in amplitude of the noise, I am guessing it could be the pulley getting old and tired.
