Sam, i have a question about JBL (Since you are affiliated with them).

Sometime ago they were selling a 12" passive vented box sub which retailed at about 11k if memory serves me right. It had a good finish, build quality, rubber surrounds and most importantly sounded great.

Now they have introduced this 12" bass tube costing about 6.5 k, poorly built, foam surrounds, lighter magnet, and sounding bad... loose boomy bass ..

Why did JBL have to do this...?? get into this dirty business of compromising quality to get cheaper products ?

what do you feel about this being a JBL fan ?

ohhhh.... I am sure Sam will give you an appropriate reply but that BOOMY BASS is something most ppl seem to like.,., while I have no access to or information about their sales figues, BUT every third install I see has one of these tubes in them!... SQ is not something most ppl want!

And personally... I dont thing the word "Compromise" is apt here... its more lika a reputed manufacurere trying to make a product to suit a particular need at a particular price point. Regardless of material used, I'm sure these tubes function as reliably as everything else in thir lineup!

But of course I read that SUMUKOO makes great tubes!!!

Hello audiophile,

That bass tube is older than the box you mention. It is for a different kind of consumer.
The tube also now uses rubber surrounds. In fact the same woofer. If you have seen a tube with foam surround, it is probably fake.
Baaki bacha quality compromise, that doesn't happen. The inventory just grows. Don't forget we're the only "specialist" manufacturer that can make stuff across a wide range of prices.

However you will be happy to know that instead of having one kind of bass reflex box, we now have several.

Hi

Hey sam come on... you should be honest here.. i agree that JBL makes a lot of grt products... But the 12" Tube (costing 6.5k) is certainly not in the JBL class.... I refuse to believe that you are not aware of that.

Navin, I'm sorry but I have to ask you this.

If that is small, at around the same budget or upto 50% higher, which other amp do you know with a larger power supply? That sure must not be a SQ amp, but I believe it must be putting out a lot of power.

Those torroids don't usually step up the voltage much. It's unlike the beefy power supplies that you must be accustomed to seeing in home applications. I bet your home cd player has a bigger TT than that.

B&T my speakers have inductors bigger than those coils! My Homemade power amp's 1200VA tranny is many times as big and I think you have seen the trannies on my proposed 8W EL34 amps. Yes guys my next amps will only be 8W rms. After all I am not LBM! :-) (just kidding LBM).

BTW one the many projects I have not started is a serious modification to a old Marantz CD63Ki incduing a new 300VA tranny. I mean when I am through with this mods it should compete with anything under $1000 currently produced. Some of the ideas are from a Wadia (so now you know where I get my inspiration from).

In fact I do find that most commercial manufacturers skimp on this end. Also in the car SMPS rule and these power supplies can manage with smaller trannies.

True I am so used to my home audio stuff that I find a lot of stuff puny. I guess it is all one's perpective. The comment was NOT meant for this particualr amp. LBM also posted the innards of an amp some time back and it had a similar sized tranny.

True I remember in your post the statement was more of a general one regarding manufacturers cutting costs wrt. the power.

There was only one reason in me posting up the amp guts here, so that I can slowly learn the nitty - grittys

On another note - Who amongst you have used Stinger accessories? Especially the wiring kits ?

the thing your are discussing is the reverse mode which is there in the head unit. It should be kept on as the display keeps switching to the reverse of what it is showing... it function is like when the last button is pressed after 30 sec the display changes and after that every 10 sec it starts circulating....

I Had a 8850 cassette player when the ole f pioneer was introduced I kept the feature off but after few months when I switched on this feature there was some marks left wich were ideal left on.....

It can be accesed by switch off the hu press the F (function) key for few seconds after scrolling u will get this reverse demo this will deactivate this feature....
