I have MMI Lx130 with v 6.1 maps. When I bought, it had v 5.0 maps. After that, I updated twice. I find more points of interest are added in every update. Now, the v 6.0 and 6.1 have street level maps with door numbers for major cities. When I went to New Delhi in last December, I could easily go from Vivek Vihar, East Delhi to my cousin's home at Dwarka and park my Linea in front of his block! It was so accurate.

The v 6.0 and 6.1 maps show my Chennai Royapettah home with door number! The earlier version showed only street name.

The version 5.0 maps didn't show Karpaga Vinayakar temple at Pillayar Patti. Now, the v 6.0 and 6.1 show the exact location of this temple, which my Linea visited on 18 August 2011, although it is mentioned as Ganesha temple Pilliyarpatti!

I might have one to sell towards the end of the year. Will let you know and advertise it in the classifieds closer to the time. Alternatively if you know anyone who travels to the UK then ask them to pick you up a Binatone F350. It should not cost more than the equivalent of RS3500 and it is pretty easy to get MMI running on it.

Rear camera was 1.5k extra; works out much cheaper than the caskas/sonys etc. (model MMI 051168 MRP 45,000/-)

Alternately, if you can stretch your budget by a 1000 bucks , you can get yourself a brand new MMI roadpilot on Letsbuy after applying the coupon code.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Cost aside, what is the difference between MMI pnd and Garmin pnd with MMI maps on it. Like will they have the same software and features ?
Is a better build quality the only advantage of Garmin over MMI devices ?

PS : Please consider two similar spec models.

I've been reading about this quite a bit and there are others who'd give you the technical details. But from what I understand, Garmin PNDs have better hardware which helps in quicker satellite lock and hence better positioning.

I've been writing to them about this. They had an update out in Aug and now are planning to have the next update out after 3 months (so Nov). They give one update free and I have a choice of opting for any one of the 4 updates that they are going to come out within a year of my purchase. I'll opt for the last one for obvious reasons.

These units have completely different Software and hardware. Only thing that would be common is map data.

Garmin units would have better hardware and that would mean faster and more accurate detection of position.

Regarding software, it is a matter of personal choice. Some users like Garmin's software, others like Sygic (software that is used on MMI PNDs).

If one buys mmi maps for a Garmin device, then wont it run on mmi software ?
I was under the impression that the Gui and features and functionality would be same on both the pnd's if it has mmi maps in it.
