some little pitter patter does keep happening. Not significant but in the background for sure!

Nevermind the effect on battery life, but i have noticed that RAM consumption has increased since i uninstalled Task Killer. Now a days most of the time it is 225mb+ of 384 mb available. When i do level 1 and level 2 clear memory, it goes back to 140-150mb depending on apps open. When i use to have task killer, most of the time it would stay between 160-200 mb and when i kill the task, it would go to as low as 116 mb-125mb.

Can somebody throw some light on this. What could be the issue?
Bro don't use a task killer if you are using Android 2.2 and above. It messes with the inbuilt memory scavenging systems. It will degrade the performance.
Froyo and up have a smaller memory footprint and more efficient scavenging techniques.

I need to have push mail facility to my corporate exchange server. Is the push mail mechanism a "real push" like BB or is it like Nokia messaging service? Nokia service polls the mail box at intervals to see whether there are new mails. But BB will use data only when a new mail is there in the mail box. The latter kills battery life if the interval is anywhere lower than 30 mins But BB works just fine.
Android has inbuilt Real Push Mail.
Hypothetically it is faster than BB also.
Because all BB messages are routed through their servers.
on Android it'll come straight from the Mail server.

And there are several options you can use. If you don't like the default Mail application, there are others that you can use.

I guess its obvious now. I'm Pro Android.

Hypothetically, it may be faster, but in the real world, the BB is way faster than the Android. I use a BB9700 and a GalaxyS, both on airtel. I get the mails atleast a minute(or more) before on the BB, than the droid.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

My Defy arrived within 2 days of booking it on letsbuy!

I am completely overwhelmed with this new android device. Need to do lots of R&D to understand each in-built application.

Though I did not do any settings/use internet/download data etc, my Airtel prepaid balance came down by Rs.200 in a single day!! I need to find out and implement better ways of managing this device effectively.

Let me go through this thread from page 1.

It's the opposite for me.
when i'm on a reliable data connection, I receive emails on my SGS2 before i get them on my Laptop. [even if they are both connected to the same wifi].
And i invaribly get mails faster on my phone than my Boss's BB and iPhone.
When mails are marked to both of us.

Mind you this only happens when i have a reliable data connection.
When i'm on Wifi at home or in office, it's instantaneous, but when i'm on 3G, where the network ain't good the mails don't come reliably.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I finally rooted my Nexus S Couple of days back.

It was fun doing it. Reminded me when I got my first computer and I was trying to format the OS and getting into the Bios. But took a long more time to Root.

My Nexus Config as of now:
CyanogenMod-7.0.3-NS
Kernel: 2.6.35.13-netarchy-nexus-1.3.4-cfs-2.3.3
Running Voodoo Control. Have to test the Sound enchancements

Battery lasting way longer than the stock for same usage. Easily 50% improvement more.

By the way GPS is taking time to fix. but once it does it retains the lock really well on the NH4.

Does SGS2 in other regions support. I doubt it. Wifi tethering is your only option. Can't think of a situation where you would need this

If it is possible to export the contacts in CSV or Excel format, upload them to gmail and then you can Sync your contacts in google account with the new android phone.

I did that to filter my contacts into a more readable format. Transferring to sim most of the names were cut.

Any tethering should be good. I keep missing the ability to tether my laptop with the smartphone which has 3g plan, at airports and hotels.

It doesnt matter for Android if 300mb free ram is there or 140mb. It will still work with the same speed!
When OS reaches 275-300mb of available 384mb, my game starts stuttering. It becomes slow in reaction. So i have to go the task manager, clear memory for level 1 & 2 and then it works proper. This didn't happen when Advanced Task Killer was installed.

On reading on a website, that Task killer consume battery, i uninstalled it, while i haven't had any battery gains, i was ok with it. But for past 2-3 times, the games become slow when the memory increases.

Why would that happen?

By stoping these application you can immediate improved performance of battery. In my Nexus S moderate use of Wifi, I get around 5 days of battery (without any data enabled), where otherwise it is usually a 1.5 days.

If you are 2G/3G not sure how these applications startup work.
my wi-fi or 3g is active all day long. i still manage to get 2 days of work from SGS. When i am traveling its 3G on all the time and when at home or work its the wi-fi that does the duty.

After sometime of use, many apps and games slows down. Don't know why. Only when i go to android's inbuilt task manager and clear memory, it starts working smoothly. And that's why this question.

Bought a DEFY for a friend from ebay for 13,800/- after 1K discount coupon from here - Motorola DEFY Android 2.1a GPS New With 1Yr Warranty | eBay

Mini review -
- Phone looks very small, donno whether thats good or bad for 22K MRP phone
- Phone is ultra fast
- Updated to 2.2.2 via Motorola Software Update Program available on their website; Support Site - Motorola DEFY
- Software Update from here - Motorola - Support - Software Update ; Choose MOTODEFY and follow instructions to download update program; It will install drivers, then connect phone, then it will download software, then it will install on phone; took about 30 minutes
- Very Loud Speakerphone
- Sharp crisp display
- Clear Camera
- Many added programs and settings (like to switch data on/off etc.) included
- Doesnt seem very high end when I compare it to the phones I use; Google Nexus One would have been a better choice for the same price (though its without guarantee here - http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...:X:RTQ:IN:1123 )

I am planning to place an order for the defy over the weekend, did your friend's defy come with red / green lens camera ? What are warranty terms when you buy from this ebay seller ? What was the manufacturing date on the box ?

Also when you updated to android 2.2 through motorola site, did you get updated version of the moto blur UI ?

Phone is totally black in colour. It is shown as manufactured in India phone though the phone's innards show the phone to be manufactured in China. The warranty terms are exactly as one would buy from any shop. It comes with full bill and One year Motorola India warranty. Manufacturing date on the box is May 2011 and MRP is printed as Rs. 21,990/-.

Moto blur's is also updated to the new version similar to the US one and one does get some moto blur enhancements like multiple scenes etc as described here - http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/...bile.en.US.pdf
