May be trying to safeguard the Ertiga as well, trying to move petrol customers on to XL6, while retaining the traditional diesel customers with the Ertiga. But hopefully not shooting themselves in the foot with this strategy.

From the recent past it is evident that Petrol only Cars have failed considerably e.g. Toyota Yaris.
I appears that MS have done their homework right; Ertiga Petrol/Diesel sales being 50:50.
The Diesel option drives an economy seeking customer to showrooms looking for anything above B2 segment. On reaching there and before signing the cheque, it is that last advice from the SA or an 'Influencer' like us based on break-even point calculations, the choice is converted to Petrol. And the overall sales figure is bumped up.
I dont see XL6 sales to cross 20% of Ertiga numbers that too after eating up a share from it.

Guys, tell me one thing. Has Maruti changed the vintage power window controls since the days of first gen Swift, 2005 in this XL6? If not, am not going to accept this as a premium offering. Period.

No they haven't and nor they will. Even if I went shopping for my kind of needs, I would not look at the Power Window Switches and decide whether I will buy this or not because in its current state, the switches are nothing but 'Functional' and remain as one during long run too.

I guess MSIL will need a very strong reason to think of redesigning them when their focus now is elsewhere - Dashboard, Seats, Steetring, MID etc and that reminds me even the MID control stick is still the same for nearly all the models.

Regarding accepting it as a premium offering based on Switches, I guess most of us won't even as an overall package and will wonder why can't this sell in a regular show room and just Nexa but that is how MSIL sees as a product placement & a sales strategy and that is working for many of their models because lesser think like how we do.

Parag bhai, agreed. On seeing the superb leather steering and beautifully designed dash one might overlook these switches. It will still be a premium offering, it will still sell and most probably it will definitely go unnoticed. But, whether continuing with the same old panel is a laid back approach or a brilliant strategy, only Maruti will know.

Just a few thoughts i wanted to share


1. Sharing parts across different models is how maruti achieves vfm pricing. You will find lots of parts shared across models, including stuff like steering, MID, seats, etc etc


2. Using old parts (like power window buttons) may not be appealing to aesthetics. But typically these old parts will be much cheaper than newer parts. Also, these older parts are tried and tested through the years - and this probably more reliable too.


3. The XL6 is just as heavy (1180-1190 kgs) as the Honda BRV petrol (1200 kgs), give or take 10-15 kgs. If the BRV can get 4-star rating, then there is no reason to automatically assume that XL6 will do much worse. It may be built just as well as the BRV (only proper crash tests will tell).


4. It is insensible to compare the percentage of high strength steel across different cars. "Advanced high strength steel" is purely a subjective term. What each manufacturer means by using that term will be different. It is mostly a marketing claim, and must be taken with loads of salt. Unless we know the exact grade of steel used and it's properties, it is mostly a hollow claim. So dont fall for cars claiming to have 70% high strength steel, nor discount cars claiming to have only 40% high strength steel.


5. Don't compare XL6 with cars like Kia seltos. The prices of Seltos are so much higher. The top variants of XL6 are clashing in price with the barebones base variant of Seltos.


6. Kia clearly fears the XL6. That is why they waited one day after the launch of XL6, to launch the Seltos. They first wanted to know the prices of XL6. The XL6 pricing has clearly had a huge impact on Seltos pricing. The petrol hte and htk models have a price difference of only 30k, while the diesel hte and htk models have a price difference of 1.4 lakhs. This is most likely due to the lack of diesel XL6. Kia seems to be hoping that by pricing the htk petrol lower, they would be able to counter the zeta mt variant of XL6.


7. XL6 is a huge vfm offering - no two ways about it. One look at the prices of competition makes my head go spinning.


The clear miss in XL6 is those puny tires. The fly in the ointment for what is otherwise a very sensible offering.

Agree with most of your points while I believe the target customers for XL6 and Seltos are different, may be with a 20% overlap. XL6 is more of a people mover with added comfort, where as Seltos has an image of Cool Luxury SUV with a lifestyle tag where the younger gen badass drivers wanted to be seen in.
