The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-51ptept5xil.jpg

Synopsis - The adventures of a young cat and a dog as they find themselves accidentally straying from their farm in Japan.

Cute little movie starring some pretty talented animals. Very well made. Both kids and adults will enjoy this.

Rating - 4.5/5

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-71ikrnuf6xl._ri_.jpg

Synopsis - Stuart is a homeless alcoholic who leads a complicated life because of the disturbing memories of his troubled childhood. His writer friend chronicles his life and tries to recount every aspect of it.

Found it to be a bit slow, but a brilliant movie. Tom Hardy was amazing in this. Available on Hotstar.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Saw a fantastic movie on the weekend - Body Brokers on Amazon USA. Will give it a 4 / 5 rating. A very different kind of movie that exposes the insurance scam between drug addicts, brokers & rehabilitation centers. Also throws some light on the struggles of a drug addict. I've never done drugs, but I was addicted to cigarettes for 20 years. Quitting takes all the willpower you got, and you have to dig deep into your reserves.

Saw this 2003 movie yesterday. It's a damn fine movie and would highly recommend it. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie pace is at the same level as his other works. Also watch it for Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, both who bagged academy awards for this movie. A mystery crime drama which is definitely worth a watch !

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Watched the "Snyder Cut" Justice League. Watched it in 2 days. Have to say, its 10 times better than the 2017 one. The story uses the same basic plot but the way it goes about it is almost completely different. One will not feel bored watching it. The almost 4 hour running time means all characters get good time screen time and stress flushed out and don't feel like they were shoehorned in for the fight scenes.

The movie could have been shorter and there are some pointless subplots which had no impact on the story. Also, I felt the background score was mediocre.

Overall, a good (looong) watch. Its very good but definitely not "the best" at anything though.

Rating : 3.5/10

Synder Cut Justice League: 4 / 5

This is a movie that will not appeal to all - for a lot who is now used to the fast pace of Marvel movies will absolutely hate it. It is astonishingly loooong. In a Marvel world, this would have been broken up into 2 movies - part 1 to give the background of the formation of Justice League and the emergence of the villian, part 2 to focus on the rebirth of Superman and the final fight.

But I absolutely LOVED the movie. It is wonderfully made, going into each and every detail to ensure there are no gaps in the storyline or the logic. There are many hints of possible following movies (including the 2018 Aquaman, 2017 Wonder Women and hopefully many more!). Each and every scene has been well thought out. My only grouse - a lot of the scenes have un-necessarily shot in slo-mo, making the movie feel even more slower.

If you are really interested in watching this movie and getting immersed into Justice League (as much as all of us have done into the Avengers), give yourselves 4-5 completely free hours, get a truckload of popcorn and whatever else that tickles your interests and then only give it a watch.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 2/5

The only thing I could say about this movie is that it is marginally better than the theatrical cut – and that’s not saying much.

When the corporate mandate is to achieve in one movie what your competitor did over six movies (and 6 years), there is only so much any director could do. As a result, while there is some semblance of character development, it is not as organic or satisfying as what Marvel did with their marquee names. The CGI and design elements still suck. Take Steppenwolf, there’s a part of his armor that hangs between his legs and looks inappropriately comedic in a couple of scenes. And the big bad (not mentioning the name, because spoiler), looks straight out of PS2/early PS3 era graphics. There’s also lots of easter eggs and teasers for DCEU movies that have since been shelved, and these just seem tacked on without serving any purpose, just to please the fanboys.

Given all that, I still enjoyed the movie – there’s something about watching these characters onscreen that invariably excites the child in all of us. And maybe, Zack Snyder was pushing for that rarefied “so-bad-its-good” zone

A phenomenal docu-movie on Netflix about the recent admissions scandal at top USA universities. Giving 'Operation Varsity Blues' a full 5 /5 rating for covering the entire story, explaining it very well and holding the viewers attention for the entire duration. Not a minute of boredom.

Agree fully, this is how an investigative series should be made. What made the series interesting is the pace, which is just relentless. Enjoyed throughly.

As an aside, watched Return to Sender on Lionsgate Play, starring Rosamund Pike and Nick Nolte. Good watch over the weekend. Off late, have enjoyed quite a few movies of Pike including I care a lot on Netflix.

Lionsgate Play has got some real good titles. One of the fantastic movies is now on the platform- The Fighter starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg. Such a brilliant movie and what a turn by a certain Mr Bale, mind boggling stuff from him for this one.

Saw the Snyder cut yesterday. At 4 hours it is indeed long, but does not stagnate or feel boring at any stage. For those who saw the 2017 version, this one is a redemption. Characters have more meaningful story arcs and roles in this movie. For example Cyborg and Flash. Their storyline was well explained in this one. Many additional characters were also given screen space like the Martian man and a main Batman nemesis at the end in a sequence . It would be unfair to compare this to Marvel in anyway. Marvel though a Disney product, still has some real villains (except CGI Thanos). Besides anyone who has seen Snyder movies like 300, knows his style of movie making is entirely different and darker.

Indeed - back in 2017, I had so many questions after seeing the Justice League movie. It seemed poorly done with half finished plots and gaping holes in the storyline. Now it feels complete. In fact as per Snyder, Batman or Superman wasn't the main protagonist of this movie, it was actually Cyborg and Flash. Both of them have been given a (kinda) origin storyline (there's a Flash movie in the works I believe) and the plot keeps them in focus throughout the movie.

Not really - one could in a way. Actually Snyder had a 5 set block planned for Justice League, this movie only covered the first two parts. Parts 3, 4, 5 would probably have seen Darkseid attacking Earth and other characters playing a much bigger role (e.g. the Martian ManHunter). And all of this was before Avengers Infinity War and Endgame were released (although there would have been plots/scripts that benefitted from each other). As of now, those seem to be gone, but I do hope parts of these get picked up again later.

I'm now a big big fan of Jack Snyder - eagerly awaiting his next big release in 2021.

Another good watch on Lionsgate Play is Midway, based on the battle of Midway during World War II. Directed by Roland Emmerich and with a good cast including Dennis Quaid, Aaron Eckhart, Woody Harrelson, and others.

Battle scenes are shot well and I found them quite realistic. Screenplay could have been better though. Would rate it 3.5/5.

Captain Fantastic- What a superlative movie this. Viggo Mortensen is just brilliant in this one, it’s been long after the movie Crimson Tide that I got see his movie and what a performance. Do give it watch folks, you will not be disappointed if you love watching good movies.

Rating: 4.5/5

The Illegal- New release starring Suraj Sharma, not something that has not been shown before but watchable nevertheless.

Rating: 3/5

Both the movies are on Amazon Prime.

The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)-godzilla.png

Saw Godzilla vs Kong today. Can easily recommend that you watch this movie in the theatres for the spectacle on screen as well as for the sound effects for which I would give this a 4/5 for the theatre experience. Godzilla, who was a fan favorite in this universe is shown in a negative shade for a while and has less screen presence compared to Kong. Kong is the people's hero here, who has somehow managed to befriend a small girl. The movie has other elements too like hollow earth theory and a mild dose of 'Journey to the center of the earth' kind of vibe. The two big fight sequences are worth a watch, especially the first showdown. The climax Hong Kong fight amidst the Colorful night skyscrapers of the harbor give it a Neon Holi kind of Vibe. Another sub plot feels inspired from the movies 'Transformers : age of extinction' & 'Pacific Rim' where a human made Titan robot goes self aware. Overall this is a paisa vasool movie and worth watching on the big screen. Not the kind you will remember after a day or two, but this is the movie that can bring back audience to the theaters in a Covid affected World.
