Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Tried watching Shamitabh a couple of days ago. Could'nt stand the movie for more than 45 minutes despite an actor of the calibre of Mr. Bachchan. What a waste. Rated 1/5.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched two engrossing movies recently and would rate them:

1. Baby 4/5. It was good thriller without any unnecessary drama or songs. No uncomfortable adult rated themes were inconspicuous and made it a treat to watch with entire family.

2. Mardani. 3/5. It was again a good thriller but some crude and language inhibited it for a family get together movie.

Regards

Himanshu

Badlapur :

I can't believe we can make this stuff, but instead push out stuff like "entertainment", and others.
It's a definitive movie, I have to say, in setting standards. Who could have thunk Varun dhawan would move so seamlessly into darkness?

The revenge theme is started with high impact deaths, and thankfully left to be after that, no dwelling through flashbacks etc.
Nawaz plays his part as a smalltime crook(that's all he is, not done dawood rival), but this movie out and out stamps Varun dhawan as a serious actor.

Wherever you have to, theatre or TV, catch this one.

5/5

Badlapur - 5/5

Damn, what a movie!

Sensational performance from Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This man owned the movie IMO. I haven’t seen any of Varun Dhawan’s previous movies but he acted quite well in this one. I did however feel he was too young to portray the role of a distraught husband/father. The supporting cast did their roles well esp. Nawaz’ mother, Huma Qureshi and Vinay Pathak. The movie was well paced, zero dragging and they wrapped it well at the end.

Looks like drama and theatre actors who’ve switched to mainstream movies perform a lot better than these super hyped Bollywood stars.

That has always been the case. Naseeruddin Shaha, Paresh Rawal, Anupam Kher, Nana Patekar and other similar style actors have all come from theatre background. All the so-called superstars of bollywood are no where near to these theatre actors in terms of acting prowess. Nawazudding is the new theatre kid on the block, so to say.

About Badalapur, yes its a great movie. Unapologetic, dark, unrestrained storyline.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched Dam laga ke haisha. Must say it is among the better movies released recently. Power packed performances by the entire cast and especially the female lead. The plot takes place in a very natural setup in UP where a young guy is married of to an overweight girl by family pressure. Anshuman Khurana fits very well in the role. He should be relieved after Hawaizade! The movie is refreshing after the regular Bollywood stuff and deserves to be a hit. My rating 4/5.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched "Ankho Dekhe" starring Rajat Kapoor and Sanjay Mishra

This lovely movie is directed by Rajat Kapoor. Man this guy is so sophisticated its tough to see him in a middle class man's role but, he fitted into that role like a chameleon

Story is about a lower middle class family in Old Delhi and everything revolves around Sanjay Mishra who has always been my favorite as he has immense talent and has been consistently delivering amazing performances

This story is in two words is "brilliantly weird". Its woven around the most simplistic and daily mundane lives of many people from the lower middle class financial status and can be related to completely

Two people who stand out are Sanjay Mishra and his wife Seema Puhua both of whom got filmfare awards for their respective roles.

3.5/5

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched Badlapur : 1.5/5

The Honda CRv & 1st Gen Skoda Octavia don't come 15 years apart!

Male lead looks the same (with just a beard to "show age") even after 15 years? He's supposed to be atleast ~45!

The killer/prisoner/crook/villain, doesn't look his part. His acting slightly compensates that, but still falls very short of anything significant.

The woman running the NGO to free critically-unwell prisoners seems to be a unnecessary character added to the mix.

The cripple prisoner on crutches too seemed to be another unnecessary character.

Small insignificant oddities :

The crooks/hoteliers wife looks his daughters age.
The killers girlfriend too doesn't age.

Not a very impressive script & screenplay at all.

Overall : A very odd movie IMO.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Watched Badlapur yesterday.

It is dark, but entertaining. The movie is a classic case of all characters doing their bit, except maybe Varun Dhawan. He's ok, but a more experienced actor would have done better justice to the angry mature man's role. Yami is a beauty and looks heavenly.

Rating = 3.5

+1 to above review (word by word & the rating).
I was also thinking about actors who could've done way better in Varun's place. (KayKay, Saif (based on Ek Haseena thi experience), LiamNeeson )

We at home, particularly search such kind movies to watch online!
Mostly, the ones starring KayKay, Rajat Kapoor, Ranvir, Vinay Pathak come under these categories:
Light, weird, simple, low-budget, moderate-funny, fairly-reality-based.

Benny&Babloo is one such movie -simple story & has very much reality-tracing screenplay.
Imdb rating : 5.9/10
My Rating: 6.5/10 (Add half a point - if you like bit of Hyd-accented-hindi )
Simple. Fun. Decent if you don't have anything else to do & like above mentioned type movies.

Cheers,

Ace.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Suraj ka satvan ghoda.
Amazing movie - narrated by Rajit Kapoor and a same story seen from different angles. If you think deeper about it, you will dwell into a feeling that nothing is reality in this world. Everything what you think to be real is just what 'you' perceive. Amazing movie, but little slow as these art films are. Rated 5/5.

Completely agree. This depicts how brilliant script & great acting can elevate a movie. I would rate it 4/5. One of my favorite movies of 2014.

Re: The Hindi Movies Thread

Say NH10 yesterday.

Kind of liked it, the story is such that it looks like the Hero was being dumb so that he could fall into such situations in the movie which will make the movie go forward.

Anushka Sharma's acting is very good.

I would give it a 3.5/5
