re: Which watch do you own?

For watch collectors, lovers and users, I hope you're all aware that the time to buy a watch (for those who don't hesitate buying online) online is great. Jabong and Snapdeal are offering 30% off on many watches.

30% off sounds great..

Fellows, I am looking at acquiring my first premium auto Chrono I have been dreaming for years. I short listed following 2.

1. Raymond Weil Freelancer Chrono Automatic
2. Omega Speedmaster

Raymond Weil is simply has sheer elegance. Omega - I suppose the name says everything.

I did not consider Rado after initial thoughts as it's flashy and not to my taste. I don't like TH as a brand.

Selling price of both is in the same range as 1.5 L at Ethos after discount on MRP.

What's your take? I know the obvious answer here, still I am giving it a try to understand your opinion.

re: Which watch do you own?

Guys,

Need your opinion on buying a watch from Amazon.com and importing it into India. If anyone has bought it from Amazon need your feedback on the same and what additional amount would I be looking at.

Seiko Sportura is what I am looking for , but the price difference is huge , it's 33K at Ethos and retails about 16K on Amazon. Apart from this Zimson Watches has stated that they will not service any watches bought online.

Please check the 'seller' details. That is very important when buying online regardless of which site you are buying from. Else if you are travelling or know someone going out of the country, have them check the price of the Sportura at the Duty Free, where you are likely to get it at a nice price and with all guarantees etc.

If you have to pay import duty when bringing it into India when it is bought from Amazon, the duty rate is quite vicious indeed. I think it could be as high as 50-60% if not more. So it is definitely worth checking.

That said, you can usually negotiate some kind of discount with Ethos, because no on really pays marked prices for luxe products any more, even entry level luxe comes at a nice price. The retailer wants a sale and to move stock and the buyer wants a deal. Invariably there is a 'meeting in the middle'...all the very best!

re: Which watch do you own?

From what I have found the difference in watch prices, especially the higher end ones is less than 20% abroad compared to India. In fact it may be more expensive in Europe, unless there is a sale going on.

You can negotiate any where between 10% to 25% discount, at least in NCR shops. Hence the price of half that in India is suspicious.

I would suggest that you desist from buying expensive watches from the net and trust only brick & mortar stores.

I have couple of watches bought from amazon. The higher was priced at $ 550 and that's Citizen Promaster SST back in 2010. At the same time the watch was trading in India at INR 50k.

Only care you need to take is get it hand delivered with somebody and not the postal delivery.

No issue that I faced with the watch and it's running like charm.

Thanks for the replies guys, Shankar , Ethos called me back today they are ready to give 2K discount on another watch I liked , can I drive a harder bargain?

Duty free is another option I can check, a colleagues wife is in the airline industry will ask her to check it out. Duty free in India will also give a better price?

Hi. Typically in the watch retail industry, the retailer would earn retail margins depending on the watch brand and category.
Strong brands would normally give less margins and weaker brands or new brands would give them a higher margin.
Seiko is a strong brand and in demand by consumers. Hence the margin they would be giving to the retailer would be lower.

As a thumb rule, Ethos is very generous with its consumer offers. They would give you around 50% or more, of the margins that they make, as discount.
In case the watch model concerned is a fast moving item, then the discount would be lower. If however, it is one of those models that are occupying valuable retail shelf space for a longer time, then the discount would be a little higher in order to shift it out. I think the Sportura is a fast selling model.

Assuming or guesstimating for a moment that the margin offered by Seiko to Ethos is around 15%, you can quite easily request and get a 7.5% discount on MRP from them.
This is only a rough thumb rule and in no way intended to be any kind of guarantee...do go and speak to them and see what best you can get.

In reference to Duty Free. Bangalore Airport has an Ethos outlet. The price of the watches there are invariably 15-20% lower than the 'city' prices for the same model of watch. The thing is, their outlet is only available at the Departure area, not in the arrivals. A week or two back, I was idly comparing the pricing and I am pretty sure that there is this kind of difference available which you can take advantage of. However, in recent times, with the horribly falling rupee and the general increase in prices by most manufacturers, the prices of pretty much all sorts of watches across the board, has really gone a bit over the top.

I agree here, I am offered 15% discount on Speed Master and 18% on Raymond Weil. I am planning to sit face to face and haggle for more. I don't care if that's a luxury section of the store or whatever, still I am going to squeeze more out of them on THE DAY.
