Re: The Cricket Thread

Indian top and middle order fails in the only warm up match before the test against England. Why am I not surprised?

BCCI managing to schedule a warm up game before the sole test itself calls for a celebration! Else we would have kept hearing that the team prefers a 'high intensity' net session than a warm up game. Only rain can save the Indian Team now in the 5th Test!

Re: The Cricket Thread

Our batting in England has always been shaky but with Rahul missing, Virat & Rohit out of touch and Pujara making a comeback it will be interesting to see if Rohit plays five bowlers or an extra batter. Jadeja hasn't played any cricket for a while so he would be rusty.

....and we will be playing against a team that is about to whitewash the world champions. They will come at us with everything they've got.

Rain, bowlers and Rishabh Pant can be the only saviours.

Re: The Cricket Thread

One of the most bizarre ways a batsman can get out in a cricket match! This happened at Headingly on the first day of the third test- England vs New Zealand.

Howzatt!!

Re: The Cricket Thread

The way the ENG team is playing the test cricket under Bazz, do we have any chance of winning the 5th test and hence the series? I don't think, ENG will allow us to draw the match, even if we wish to do so. So, it will be an uphill task for us to win the series now.

This ENG team is playing the test matches in ODI mode and ODI in T20 mode! I just checked and saw that, since 1936, the most runs scored in a day is 509 by SL and ENG might as well beat this easily and may as well score 600 in a day?

On the other hand, it is a high risk high return approach. If they play this way, they will eventually lose one. Let's hope it's the next one.

Btw, why did Bharat open in the second innings of the warm up game. He's unlikely to start in the playing eleven, so why not give additional practice to the sure starters?

Good point. I was just thinking, this may be a high risk play in a knockout matches in T20/ODI tourneys. But, not much in test cricket, unless they are playing a match with series still alive.

They got enough practice in First innings, and have figured out that they will anyway fail in the match so better to just sit and relax.

Re: The Cricket Thread

I still believe we can beat England in England. Hosts are playing their best game and probably India will need some heroics to win (been there, done that)

My playing XI for the final Test Match.

R Sharma
S Gill
C Pujara
V Kohli
S Iyer
R Pant (wk)
H Vihari
R Jadeja
U Yadav
M Shami
J Bhumrah

Re: The Cricket Thread

England won the toss and elected to field.

I hope Indian batting doesn't collapse on day 1 itself, I'm not being pessimistic but always have this fear on day 1 of the first test , though officially it's the fifth test!

Another experiment this time retaining both Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari (which is good), but comes at the risk of trying Pujara as the opener partnering Gill. But won't be the first time he's opening, I think he has opened a few times in the past.

Re: The Cricket Thread

The last thing we need is a day1 collapse, only for Butler and Stokes to activate T20 mode like they did against NZ. Then, we are in for some very deep embarrassment. My fingers crossed.

Re: The Cricket Thread

My doubt is how can our captain Bumrah control fielders and bowlers from third man or fine leg position?

Re: The Cricket Thread

It's again the lower order batting that's helping save the day for India

Hope Pant, Jadeja, Shardul can get us to 250+ at least.

Going by England's recent form, this will be tough.

The stats are against us as well - we've lost the last 6 tests played at Edgbaston with 3 of them being innings defeats!
