My XUV700 succumbs to the infamous "Hill Hold Control Error": Easy fix

The first thing I did when the bootup was finished was accessed the alerts history in the MID.

BHPian RavenAvi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

About time I had it - the now infamous "Hill Hold Control Error" alert.

Unlocked Icarus in the morning and opened the driver's door and as soon as I slid into the seat, there was some jarring noise and a thud from the speakers while the startup screens booted up very slowly. The opening animation of the 7OO racing across both screens was not displayed. Instead, it went directly to the Drive Info menu display after the twin dials booted up. I had the Fuel Info menu enabled last.

And then, this popped up:

Turned off the ignition and turned it on the back again and was greeted with the same alert yet again. Enabling and disabling the Traction Control System or the Hill Descent Control via their respective buttons on the right side of the steering didn't make it go away.

This is the current software version:

Only the reverse camera display was activated via laptop on Saturday, so I am pretty sure the software wasn't updated. Called up the service manager and asked him to get this clarified from the tech.

Could be an OTA update caught in the middle, or the AdrenoX software being glitchy? We shall find out soon.

Yesterday went by with all sorts of suggestions from the two service centres I was in touch with all day regarding the infamous "Hill Hold Control Error" alert which popped up in Icarus's MID - Paramount in Jeypore & the local Balaji Motors. Some of them were completely mind-boggling and only managed to raise my alarms further until I checked with my friends in the TORC (Tribe of Royal Cheetahs) Telegram group & our Team-BHP official review of the XUV7OO and calmed myself.

Sample this - ABS sensor acting up, rat bites, faulty sensors in front wheels, upgrade in progress, front wheels hit somewhere during my journeys, reverse camera display shouldn't have been enabled, battery drainage, HDC module faulty, TCS module faulty, modules need replacement, sensors need replacement, mandatory software update required, the silver box needs to be replaced, vehicle to be towed - you name it, the service centre listed it. They even cited low tyre pressure as one of the possible reasons!

In the end, all it took was a long pause after shutting down from when the error had popped up and turning Icarus back on. Back to the dull humming followed by the fast bootup, the 7OO racing across the screens, MID booting right into the Fuel Info menu, "Zap Mode Activated", four boxes lining up from the right in the AdrenoX display, etc.

The first thing I did when the bootup was finished was accessed the alerts history in the MID. It was blank. No Alerts found, said Icarus to me. Cranked up and he started with a roar and a clatter and settled down nicely.

Much ado about a software glitch?

Big thanks to our official Team-BHP 7OO review thread where I got to know that this is a known software bug in the AdrenoX system. If I wasn't a Team-BHP member, God knows what the service centres would have done to my Icarus to "fix" this "huge problem".

One good thing I noticed about enabling the reverse camera display is that until the actual AX7 unit arrives, I have twin reversing sensor displays at my disposal!

One in the MID and one in the HU.

2 interesting features I discovered with the sunroof of my XUV700 AX5

Never saw these features on my old 2020 Hyundai Creta.

BHPian RavenAvi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Found out a new feature of the 7OO today - the panoramic sunroof comes with rain-detection sensors.

I was driving back home with the front windows slightly down and the sunroof opens in fresh air mode (slanted up from the back). It was drizzling very lightly. As soon as the drizzle got heavier and bigger raindrops started falling, an Alert inside a yellow box popped up in the MID display, saying:

"Rain detected. Please close the sunroof and power windows."

Never saw this alert in my 2020 Creta.

I closed the sunroof and the front windows and the alert disappeared. Icarus was in motion and I was wading through traffic so I couldn't take a snapshot. Next time it pops up, I shall post the pic here.

Found out another feature of the sky roof yesterday - it comes with a built-in speed sensor.

I was returning from a short trip and had the sky roof popped open backwards in fresh air mode. As soon as I crossed 60 km/h, the MID displayed an alert saying "High speed detected. Close sky roof immediately."

Here's what BHPian Highh5 had to say on the matter:

I think it will be there in most of the new cars which have a panoramic sunroof. In Harrier, as soon as automatic wipers detect rain and start working, the system checks if the sunroof is open and if it is open then it closes it automatically. But there is no pop-up on the MID screen.

Mahindra XUV700 recalled over alternator belt issue

This is the third recall issued by Mahindra for the XUV700 in the span of a single month.

Mahindra has issued yet another "critical recall alert" for the XUV700 over an issue related to the alternator belt and auto tensioner.

Mahindra has given directions to all service centres to replace the alternator belt and auto tensioner on the XUV700. The company has also initiated a recall for flashing the ESCL (Electronic Steering Column Lock).

It is said that AWD variants of the XUV700 have been affected by this recall. However, it is still not clear if other variants are also facing the same issues.

This is the third recall issued by Mahindra for the XUV700 in the span of a single month. Earlier, the AWD variants were recalled for the inspection of the propeller shaft bolts and the replacement of rear wheel coil springs.

XUV700's DPF clogged: How I activated self-clean mode to fix the issue

The fuel efficiency of my Mahindra XUV700 dropped to single digits while trying to fix the diesel particulate filter clogging.

BHPian RavenAvi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Faced another first on my XUV700 yesterday afternoon, an error message saying: Diesel Particulate Filter is clogged / REGEN required.

I was on an in-city run through heavy, lashing rains when these alerts popped up on the MID:

Not sure why these came up. There was no change in engine response or revs. Neither was I on very short in-city jaunts at any time recently.

Called up my (now) trusty Paramount service manager who recommended I take it to the local Mahindra service centre, Balaji Motors. Did the same and drove Icarus to the local Mahindra service centre on the outskirts of my city where, after staying outside for around 10 minutes, I was turned back because they were not permitted to even touch the XUV7OO! Apparently, due to the blacklisting of the dealership since last year, none of their service techs was trained in handling XUV7OOs!

The service manager there did his best to convince his higher-up (on the phone) that my XUV7OO was facing an issue and to permit them to at least hook up the service laptop and diagnose the vehicle so that they could take a reading of the amount of soot collected inside the DPF and inform me about the same, but his superior was firm and adamant and put his foot down on this. He told him to tell me to contact RSA (Road Side Assistance) instead and wait. Meanwhile, the service centre's CoTek had also arrived. Both stood in the pouring rain and shrugged helplessly at me. I told them not to worry and that I was capable of tackling this problem myself.

Called up the Paramount service centre's manager again and he hooked me up with the CoTek over there. I detailed the problem and my recent running trips to him and told him there was no problem with my XUV's engine response. All was as expected and I was suspecting that another cranky sensor was at fault here. He told me not to worry and, if possible, to drive on the highway at speeds of around 70 km/h for at least 30 minutes till the warnings disappeared. When I told him that heavy rains have clogged all roads and highways around my city, he told me to follow his instructions over the phone on doing a Forced Parked Regeneration process.

Forced Parked Regeneration Procedure

  1. On stationary mode in an open area, I cranked up the engine with the gear in neutral and with the handbrake pulled up.
  2. Then I accessed the "DPF Regeneration" section under the "Drive Info" menu (after Trip A, Trip B & Clock), and pressed "OK". The mHawk engine immediately revved up to 2,500 rpm by itself and stayed there continuously.
  3. The CoTek told me that it would take at least 30 minutes for the process to be complete if the soot accumulated inside the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) had exceeded 10 grams, and not to touch any of the A, B or C pedals.
  4. I sat inside quietly and kept observing the MID which kept showing the 2 warnings. After 7-8 minutes, the warnings disappeared from the MID and the engine revs came back to normal idling.

Revved it a couple more times and then drove for 40 km on the open highway before returning home.

Called up the Paramount CoTek and thanked him for all his help and told him that the Regen process lasted for only 8 minutes. He was of the opinion that the soot collected inside the DPF must be less than 4-5 grams, that's why the process ended sooner than expected. He also told me to avoid very short trips between shutdowns as much as possible, or let the engine idle for 7-8 minutes before a complete shutdown if I am at the end of a pressed-for-time short trip.

Big thanks to my TORC friends and BHPian sbm for being in constant touch throughout this 2-hour period.

Took Icarus out today on another 50 km run to see if anything unexpected happened. All was fine and I reached 3-digit speeds in no time. Came back home extremely satisfied.

The real-time fuel efficiency displayed on the MID had dropped to 9.6 km/l yesterday (from 15.7 km/l displayed before the warnings popped up). Now it's risen up to 13.2 km/l after my short trip today.

Big Brother is Watching!

Also, I came to know the day before yesterday that higher-ups at Mahindra are keeping track of ownership reports. My first free service report was seen and the unavailability of parts issue was followed up at Paramount by their higher-ups from the

Head Office. I too received a call from the area CCM (Customer Care Manager) who enquired from me if I had any problems during the first free service. I clarified that wrong parts (from the AX7L) had been ordered and which have since been rectified. The correct parts are in transit and should reach by next weekend. I received a follow-up email from him on our phone conversation too, which was followed by another email yesterday which gave me a thumbs up for the support given by the Paramount CoTek with the forced Parked Regen process.

Running has become limited due to my job commitments and continuous heavy, lashing rains here which have hit us for almost a month now.

ODO now stands at 1,617 km.

Rumour: Mahindra XUV700 extended warranty prices to be hiked

4th and 5th year extended warranty might soon cost around Rs 40,500 (including GST).

Mahindra is likely to increase the prices of its ‘Shield’ extended warranty packages for the XUV700 from August 2022.

It is said that an internal circular has been issued informing the staff about the price hike. The exact details are not yet known, however, rumours suggest that the 4th and 5th year extended warranty might cost around Rs 40,500 (including GST).

Mahindra has been steadily increasing the price of the extended warranty packages. In April this year, the 4th and 5th year cover for the XUV700 AX5 Diesel MT cost Rs 24,779, which has now been increased to Rs 27,300.

If reports of the steep hike in the prices of the extended warranty packages for the XUV700 are true, it would be wise to opt for it as soon as possible.

Mahindra XUV700 bookings cross the 1.5 lakh mark

Around 1 lakh XUV700 customers are still waiting for the delivery of their cars.

Mahindra has announced that it has received over 1.5 lakh bookings for the XUV700. The milestone was achieved in less than a year since order books opened on October 7, 2021.

The Mahindra XUV700 was launched on August 15, 2021, at an introductory price of Rs. 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The demand for the model has been strong from day one, however, Mahindra has been facing supply constraints, which have led to long waiting periods. By June 2022, Mahindra had delivered 42,000 units of the XUV700. Around 1 lakh customers are still waiting for the delivery of their cars.

The XUV700 comes with two engine options - 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol producing 197 BHP and 380 Nm and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that makes 182 BHP and 420 Nm (MT) / 450 Nm (AT). Both engines come with a choice of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive will also be available as an option.

Completed 1000 km on my XUV700: Found a series of niggles along the way

The low fuel alert came up with the DTE still showing 164 km, which has never happened to date.

BHPian RavenAvi recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

1,000 on the Odometer

Crossed the milestone on Thursday evening, after a series of gremlins hit Icarus.

I was leaving my office to head home, and after turning the key, I was greeted by twin blank screens! Turned off and turned back on, the result is the same. Again turned off and turned back on (3rd time), and the MID with the twin dials came back to life, while the AdrenoX infotainment screen was blank for a few seconds before starting the display of the 4 rectangular boxes sliding in from the right side of the infotainment display to the left side, and went into the "Fun With XUV7OO" & "Coming Soon" screens soon after.

This was not the first time I encountered the blank screens gremlin. Had happened once before at home, but the display started as soon as I had turned the key off and back on, so I didn't think much of it that time.

Interestingly, this time in the ODO display, the fuel indicator vertical line went blank (empty) and the MID plastered the "Low Fuel" warning before me. No voice alerts. The MID had reset itself to the Vehicle Info screen yet again (I usually drive with the Fuel Info screen by default to keep a tab on the DEF level indicator). Blank as in completely blank, meaning that the systems were telling me that there wasn't even a drop of diesel inside the tank!

Turned the key again back and forth, and the bootup of both screens was quicker this time, although the FE indicator line showed a very small line in red, while the Distance to Empty value showed 164 km! This time, the lady living under the Voice Alerts cottage of the 7OO spoke to me and said - "Your car is running on low fuel."

This was not the case in the afternoon when I had driven to my office from home. The fuel indicator line was healthily showing in white, the red portion was quite below, the DTE range was 192 km, and my office is a mere 2 km away from my home.

And, the low fuel alert doesn't kick in at the 164 km DTE range. At least in Icarus, till now, it never has.

Nevertheless, I filled up at the nearest pump and crossed the milestone while leaving the place.

All the recent social media talks of fuel leakage and fuel tank issues of the 7OO made me apprehensive and I checked the underbody of Icarus both at the office parking space and at the fuel pump, especially under the rear wheel well where the fuel tank sits. Thankfully, no drips or leakage were seen. Shrugging it off as a one-off incident and a temporarily faulty fuel sensor, I moved on.

Also, I have noticed that the Google Maps display under Android Auto starts with the dark "Night" screen by default these days. This, despite the Settings set to "Day" or changing to either "Automatic" or "Day". Did a lot of tinkering in my S21 Ultra and inside the AdrenoX's settings, but this didn't cure it. I thought this was a new gremlin in Icarus's systems, but a search on Google confirmed this as a problem with the latest update for Google Maps (version 11.34.1 and later) which is affecting many car owners who are using Android Auto. No solution to this but to wait for the next update from Google. The stock MMI navigation maps in the AdrenoX system are working fine.

The keyhole of Icarus loves its key so much that it absolutely refuses to let go of the key when the XUV is shut down. This is now irritating. Twisting it back and forth repeatedly to get it out is now a regular happening. Have to get this rectified.

I had taken an online slot for Saturday morning to get the First Free Service done at the local Mahindra dealership, Balaji Motors, but the lack of communication from their Service Manager despite my calls or Whatsapp messages made me irritated. He neither picked up my repeated calls nor answered the messages despite seeing them. Called up a girl at the service reception with whom I had talked over the phone, and she said that they couldn't accommodate Icarus on Saturday since there were a lot of pending vehicles opened up in their service hangar and they were instructed to finish them off before taking any new vehicles.

Did some enquiries at my office and heard reports of bad servicing experiences from some contacts of my colleagues. I eventually cancelled my original online slot from the local dealership and booked a slot from the Paramount Automotive dealership at Jeypore, Odisha, from where I had taken delivery. Called the Service Manager there who picked up my call the first time itself, and was happily ready to accommodate me on Saturday.

But, my little one suffered a toe injury on Friday and she needed minor surgery. Due to that, I had to skip the Jeypore run yesterday.

Also, in between, I had transferred Rs 4,000/- as advance for the Power Folding ORVMs set and the AX7 Reverse Camera, which has been duly ordered and should reach the Jeypore dealership by next weekend.

Closed the deal for the alloy with minor scratches (pic shared in an earlier post) at Rs 7,000/-. I shall go and get a suitable tyre in the default 235/65/17 profile soon (thinking Bridgestone), and carry it with me when I visit them next weekend for the first service + get both the pre-ordered items installed (hopefully).

Signing off with a couple of comparo pics received on Whatsapp:

Brothers in arms.

With the mighty.

Credits to the original photographers.

ODO is at 1,052 km. Catch you all soon with more updates.

Installed Rs 2 lakh worth of audio upgrades on my Mahindra XUV700 AX5

I plan to replace the Sony with dual Alpine subs moulded in the boot, in the near future.

BHPian Mogs recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi,

I have a 5-seater AX5 and went for an audio upgrade. With the DSP, component speakers and dedicated sub, it sounds much clearer and provides a great soundstage which can be personalized through multiple settings. Significantly, I also get to use 3.5mm and Optical outputs from my Hi-res players, which make the BIGGEST difference in sound quality. No original wires were cut, so hopefully shouldn't impact the warranty.

There is a wired remote commander to handle amp/sub/source levels and select inputs. Vehicle alerts are not played if you select any source other than the head unit. I am a sedate driver and don't need it though, but know many friends who have spent 10s of thousands to just disable alerts in cars.

I got an 8-channel signal processor, Helix DSP.3s installed tapping the speaker out through a Mahindra-specific ISO wiring harness. The DSP has 8 channel outputs, which can be individually configured.

I have used 4 channels powering one pair of Morel Virtus 602 components for the front door in an active setup without using crossovers. A 4-channel Brazzo PA690 Amp power the 2 midranges and 2 tweeters independently.

2 channels are used for the rear door Morel Virtus 602 components. I reused the crossover from front components for a bi-amped setup with independent crossover for tweeters and midrange, using another 4-channel Brazzo PA660 amp.

Currently, I am using 2 channels for the subwoofer, connected to a Sony bass tube through a Class D micro amplifier Vibe 400.1

I plan to replace the Sony with dual Alpine subs moulded in the boot, in the near future.

The panels below the dash need to be plied open for accessing the speaker wire harness and are not for the faint-hearted. Component speakers with subwoofer powered through speaker level inputs should be a good enough upgrade compared to the default sound.

The overall cost with damping, moderate amps and speakers was close to 2 lakhs, no regrets! A bit of solace was that I had price protection for the first-day booking of XUV.

If you think this was expensive, please check out the inspiring Baleno RS audio upgrade thread by ROG_AK.

My setup was very professionally done to my satisfaction over 3 days by Sukumar, Karthik and the team at Autoplanet, Koramangala. Very friendly, knowledgeable and professional installers. I am yet the get the final tuning done due to other priorities.

Dealer sneakily swaps my XUV700 tyres between PDI check & delivery day

I have waited for 10 months to take delivery of my brand new SUV.

Thanks to Manoj Elangovan for sending this in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP share page!

Dear Team-BHP,

Request help from the valuable Team-BHP community to resolve this issue at the earliest.

After waiting 10 months for my XUV700, which I booked on Day 1 - 07 October 2021; I was given the good news on 4 July 2022 that the vehicle has reached the dealership's yard.

As part of PDI, I took a video of the car with VIN details and the exteriors. The car came shod with Bridgestone Ecopia EP850 tyres (235/60 R18)

Satisfied with other checks during the PDI, I released the loan payment and proceeded for vehicle delivery by 11 July 202.

On arriving at the dealership around 4 pm IST, I was shocked to see that the vehicle now had MRF Wanderer (235/60 R18).

From PDI:

At the dealership during delivery

Also, the car had paint chips and rough patches in the rear boot door which they have promised to fix.

When I encountered the dealership manager regarding the same, they are in firm denial that there wasn't any tyre change. However, my sales advisor acknowledged and agreed in their presence that during PDI the vehicles were shod with Bridgestones.

I have reached with the CEO of Zulaikha Motors Chennai as well as the Area Sales Manager, Mahindra and have reported the issue and shared the video and photos of the same.

They have promised verbally and over Whatsapp that they'll give me a proper resolution on this latest by Wednesday - 13 July.

Awaiting the same.

Since I had my family waiting long since 4 pm. Proceeded to take car delivery by 8 pm IST. Made sure to point out the issues in their delivery acknowledgement slip.

God knows what else people can change between PDI and delivery. Given the incident, I'm sceptical of everything else on the car.

Mahindra, If you are reading Team-BHP, please take note of things happening for your flagship product.

Screenshot from PDI video showing Bridgestone tyres as attached.

Are dealerships authorized to swap car body parts at their will? Does Mahindra have an audit on what tyres the cars are sent from the factory?

More questions but a restless and anxious new owner here.

Regards

Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:

What the dealer did is pathetic and it was perhaps done on another customer's preference for the tyres your car came with, so they just swapped.

However, between the two brands, there is nothing to choose. It's not that one is wildly superior to another. My suggestion = don't let this dampen your spirits because you have bought an absolutely terrific SUV with your hard-earned money. Take the car and as a sweetener to the entire situation, drive straight to a tyre shop and swap to even better tyres than these two .

Shit happens. We have to adapt to it.

Here's what BHPian harish11128 had to say on the matter:

Hi Manoj,

Thanks for sharing this. I also have a booking with Zuleikha Motors Chennai. Looks like I have to be extra careful while taking delivery.

I was offered a vehicle by the SA yesterday(somebody else cancelled it). But SA didn’t agree to a PDI, so I rejected it. He said they received a communication from management yesterday to not allow PDIs at the stockyard anymore due to some recent incident. I assume it’s due to the issues observed by you.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if they prohibit video/photo during PDI, if such a thing happens during my PDI, I would definitely take it up to M&M management.

I see that you have taken down your PDI video now. Would you be able to provide us with the latest updates from the dealership on this?

Here's what BHPian condor had to say on the matter:

Hi Manoj,

While the swap isn't ethical, I think the Wanderers may be a (little) better than the Ecopia's. While I have stayed away from Bridgestone and Goodyear, I have at least considered the Wanderers.

Since the tyres on your vehicle are also new, and you will get the applicable warranty, I suggest going ahead with the Wanderers.

On the other question, swapping parts is not ethical, especially when there is damage. in such cases, they need to get new parts and replace the same.

Here's what BHPian VinsWagen had to say on the matter:

I have no comments on if MRF ones are better than Bridgestone or not. It is immaterial and irrelevant. The dealer is not supposed to change anything after the PDI, without letting the customer know. Period!

It is a breach of trust and ethics. Removing the tyres, whichever brand it is, is a strict no-no. Yes, it's a sad truth that such practices are rampant - most businesses keep away from such practices only when there is a fear of consequence. This has to be reported and the practice curbed.
