People I know who are using Digital TV have given positive feedback. They are the ones who have used it for 2 months approx. Got their connections during employee/partner launch.

I will update on how much time it takes before it starts working.

The installation commenced at 2:00 PM Oct 18, 2008.
Completed in an hour and since then no complaints w.r.t quality.
I am receiving all the channels.
Have decided to call up customer care and ask them which regional pack will be added over to my account.

Let me start the fight before the channels are removed.
Will update on the outcome.

One Crib on the BIg Tv system.

Run thru the channels fast. i.e. don't take finger away from the + button.
System freezes to a standstill.

Makes me wonder, does it run on Vista by any chance.

A bit about Big TV

I checked the schemes of Dish, TataSky, SunDirect, BigTV & DigitalTV. I found BigTV to have all the channels my family & I watch. But the reviews on BigTV service was not so promising. The local electronic dealers too didn't say good about BigTV installation & service. But the package was good for the price. So I decide to go for it. Here is what happened:

Sunday (19/10):
1:30PM - Walked into Reliance Communication & picked BigTV package for Rs 2,190/- (South Popular package)
2PM - Called their toll free call center: Busy for 5 minutes
2:30PM - Called their call center: Busy
4PM: Called again, got reply, got work oder number !!! They promised to install in 72 hours !

Monday (20/10):
9:45AM - Their service engineer called me and checked if they can install now.
10:30AM - Engineers start installing
11AM - BigTV up & running, with all channels !!

PS: We have TataSky at home - so a small comparison:
1. TataSky interface is smoother
2. Quality - not noticeable difference between the two.
3. Schemes, Channels -BigTV wins hands down.

I find the freeze reducing in intensity.
I guess the STB has some sort of a cache.
Have run thru the channels at high speeds (my wife hates that ).
But its working better.

About the Regional plan.
Customer service has assured me that they will cut out all the plans except whatever is chosen in the submitted documents. But I did not fill anything in those docs. Simply had no idea what the codes were.
The customer service told me that its not a problem. Once the system gets into place for my account all I need to do is call up and inform them that the wrong Regional plan is active. I will update once the situation arises and how its resolved.

I spoke to Tata Sky customer service today about adding a sports pack. Towards the end I slipped in a few questions about the new DVR. apparently they've announced it but it's still not available. It will be available "soon", is all the guy said. For the same reason there is no news about the "special offer" for existing customers The only extra bit of info I got was that the DVR has two tuners. So two cables will come from the dish to the DVR. This is what enables it to record a channel in the background while you watch another one. Also the dish will change to the sexy black one, which is 5 cm bigger than the current one. The DVR uses MPEG4 technology but no news on whether it's HD ready or what sort of connectors it has at the back. The rep did say it will have better picture but I really don't think he had any clue.

Since in the UK Sky uses Thomson PVRs, a search on the Thomson web site led me to this -
DSR340
It looks very similar to the TSky PVR. If its the same then we'll get an S-video out but its standard definition only.

Hey! The Sun Direct bouquet seems very nice - It has all the important channels bundled in at no extra cost! Especially channels like Colours and 9X etc which TataSky charges extra for! (The former is not even an option in BIG TV)!

The Sun Direct does not have the ESPN and Star Sports and also the Neo Cricket and Neo Sports package even as an add-on.

Airtel Digital TV claims HD Ready, but they haven't provided HDMI output in their STBs. Anyone installed can confirm this. The black interface seems to be good.
