Which of these is the better buy at the same prices?

Purchased OP6 8GB/128GB red version from Amazon sale for wife. Initially thought of Samsung S8 from Flipkart, but SBI discount brought the 128GB price down to 31999/- (without exchange). For me it was 128 GB and newer 2018 model vs Samsung pay (wife used that a lot).
Wife’ current A7 (6) has its back glass cracked, implies peanuts in exchange. Hence, decided to keep it as back up phone. Any idea, how much it may cost to get that back cover glass repaired for A7?

A month long search for a good phone @ a good price came to an end today, with the One Plus 6 (64GB, mirror black).
Price was 29999- 2000 SBI discount- 1000 some cashback.
Didn't want to lose the headphone jack, and pay 10k more for the 6t releasing in a few weeks.

Other phones considered, up until the amazon sale;
Nokia 6.1 plus, Moto One Power, Honor Play and Poco F1.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

After weighing the pros and cons of different models under 30-35K and waiting for almost a month, picked up the OnePlus 6 64 GB today, from Amazon.

After 2000 SBI discount + 1000K cash back, the net price is 27K and I think the mobile is a steal at this price point.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Thanks a lot Arun and Traveler.
We dont use Netflix/Amazon. I am aware of the S8 battery capacity. If you dont mind, I have one last question. Do you think S8 is way better than Asus 5z in terms of display ? ( 570 ppi vs 402 ppi. Also its a super amoled) . If there isn't much difference in display, I will buy the Asus 5z.

The one thing is that with its smaller screen, the curved screen on both sides ends up taking a bigger percentage of the visible screen, so if you do a lot of reading on the phone you might not like it (the curves catch some glare). This isn't as much an issue on the bigger S8+/S9+/Notes, but is more pronounced on the S8.

It has a 3000 mAh battery (not sure where the Asus is), so consider that factor as well.

I'd say the S8's display is excellent on its own, although having never seen the Asus, I can't compare. I tend to lean on GSM Arena for phone reviews, so here's the display review for the S8 and 5z.

Display preferences are probably the most subjective of things, so it's best to read both reviews and see which are the points that attract you.

For me, I like Samsung's AMOLEDs because - they look phenomenal, text looks crisp, pictures look vivid, and since I use dark themes where possible, it works really well with AMOLEDs (since they can hit a perfect black).

The S8 is also able to crank up its brightness tremendously when outdoors, so you can use it conveniently.

Also, AMOLED screens play nice with polarized sunglasses, while the polarizer present in LCD screens will cause the screen to appear weird.

From the review, I also see that the z5 doesn't have water/dust protection, and the camera is only good, not great (understandable, given its price point). I would personally be inclined towards the S8, but it is your call at the end of the day

I see the S9 advertised for ~43k on Amazon. How much of an incremental upgrade is it over the S8 to justify the extra dough?

Do you have an S8 already? If yes, don't bother, the changes are minimal (especially on the non-plus version).

If not, what is the S8 being offered for? 43k vs?

Samsung gives 2 major Android updates for their flagships, so with an S8, that's Nougat > Oreo > Pie; with an S9 that's Oreo > Pie > Q. Factor that in as well.

But too slow right? I hear that the Pie is expected in Jan 2019, which is almost the time for S10 launch.

Yeah, Samsung is among the slower OEMs to issue updates, Jan sounds about right (or even a month early, given my S8 got Oreo in Feb this year). Personally, I'm not too hung up about this, because I'm more focused on security updates, which do arrive monthly, for 3 years, IIRC.

My point, however, was that buying the S8 means that Pie would be the last upgrade it sees, the S9 would get one more beyond that.

However, it is a good point and thanks for calling it out, because it's worth mentioning to Chetan that the S8/S9 (and pretty much every recent Samsung) is on Oreo, not Pie.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Just arguing out the opposite way: OS has become quite stable and feature rich. Does it really matter now if we need to plan a purchase based how many upgrades we can look for ? I have not seen any major effect with updates to OS. The daily usage mode continues seamlessly.

Unless and until, OEMs tend to push updates which can slow down the phone and force buyer to change?

Just wanted to know, if folks really have felt efficiency improvement with last few OS upgrades ?

The best I have seen is evolution of Google Assistant, and voice support which seems to be getting better and well integrated with OS updates. Any other feature set?

True, and even though incremental updates (compared to the S8), the S9 feels every bit a better phone. And it also has the fingerprint sensor at the right place.

On a side note, with the Pie upgrade in my Pixel 2 XL I am finding it difficult to go back to wife’s Note 8 (on Oreo) – got so used to the lack of home button

Very good point. I was using an S7 alongside my S8 (for work), and with the S7 running Nougat and the S8 on Oreo, I always wanted the S7 to come onto Oreo - both for the OS improvements as for Samsung's skin improvements.

Now on Oreo, I'm happy, and I'm not looking forward to any feature on Pie. I'd even argue that some of the UI changes in Pie feel like they're made for change's sake.

I felt the battery life improved once my S7 received Oreo. It was worse the initial few days, but once it relearnt the usage patterns, I found a noticeable improvement (e.g. ~10% more battery charge remaining upon returning home).

Ah, excellent point, that is a key difference between the S9 and S8

Muscle memory or preference? I was aghast when I first read of that change, and wondered why they needed to "improve" something that wasn't broken. If preference, that's good to know, and I'd like to experience Pie myself.

I would say both. Nougat to Oreo was not a big change from a usability point of view, but Pie feels different. For me the gesture navigation was easy to adapt as I was using a iPhone X as well (work phone). Overall they just made the whole experience more user-friendly.

The S8 can be had for ~30k on sale, and no, I don't have one.

More a curious question than anything else, I was actually quite tempted by the Pixel 2, and I don't like Samsung much having used a near-stock Droid Turbo for 3 years now (still going great and no real complaints).

Probably a good idea to wait for Pixel 3 to look for offers on the 2?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Pixel 3 launched yesterday and ridiculous pricing for India! Starts from INR 71,000. Pricing apart, there are no major improvements in hardware aside. Most of the updates are on the camera. For the same price, once can get Note 9 or even iphone X during the sale. Google should price competitively if they want pixel to be a success.
