You're right. I've been waiting for a long time. I just want to know if there's anything that I don't know about buying vehicle towards the year end.
I'm going for it.

I've also listed some accessories here, if you guys can help me give your inputs and if there's anything that is must and I'm missing! Thanks.

- +2 years extended warranty (Is RSA included in extended warranty or sold separate?)
- Rear view camera kit (2620) - could use parking sensors on XUV500 for 9 years now, do I need this!
- Mudflaps set front and rear (765)
- Bug deflector (1570) - can it be removed and remounted back easily?
- Wheel arch cladding (6160) - bit too costly, do I really need it?
- Thar magnetic sun shade - set of 2 (970) - anyone has experience using these!
- Steering wheel cover (305) - should I go for it or better aftermarket
- Floor mats - nomad from 3M
- Philips X-tremeVision G-Force bulbs

For later:
- ARC suspension (looking at better ride and stability) - is this worth going for?
- Matte PPF/TPU - Need to research on cost/benefit - I feel this would look great on mystic copper color

If someone could help me with better options for insurance, that would be a great help!

Yes, I supposed to be protected by the price hike happened in Jun, not sure about the one in Jan this year, I booked on Dec 1st last year, need to check.
Yes, Thar production was affected by chip shortage, those following process and waiting patiently are even more affected I feel.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

3D Kagu mats are coming up with a new floor mat for Thar and will be available from next month onwards. I have gone ahead with Michelin trimmable rubber mats for the time being, the mats are extremely durable and non slippery.

Thanks

I took delivery of my Petrol AT CT last week, I can shed some information on your requested topics:

1. Insurance - Dealer initial quote was 68K, Market quote was 58K, on the day of delivery, dealer gave it for 57K (ICICI Lombard)
2. I took 2 year extended warranty - about 19K. RSA was an additional 5K (I did not purchase this)
3. Accessories: here are some accessories I got installed:
- Fuel Tank Protector - about 2300
- Wheel arch cladding - 6100 (I personally like how they look - subjective ofcourse)
- Stainless Steel Thar Door Sils
- Mudflaps (F and R)
- Floormats - I ordered these from M2all website rather than from dealer since he didn't have the black and red mats in his stock - about 5K

Aftermarket Accessories:
- Rear View/Dash Cam - The rear view camera offered by Mahindra is very low resolution. I sourced a rear/front reverse camera with front/rear dashcam from US (about $200). I believe the 70 mai is something similar that's available in the indian market, so would recommend checking that out before making a call.
- Dead pedal: Mahindra quoted 3K, got it for 1500 from local store

Accessories Planned:
- A radiator protector is must, I am planning an offroading bumper/grill upgrade so will get the protector with the new bumper.
- Arm rests with cupholders (must if you will have backseat riders)

Good luck!

They told me about having ready stock for delivery due to festive season which I'm unable to digest. Diesel variant still has 11-12 months waiting as per dealer.

Anyways, have asked for VIN and other details to get absolute clarity on allotment before I go ahead with further process. Dealer agreed for me to take insurance on my own. Initially they kept haggling but relented eventually. The quote is ~ 93,000 vs 60,000 - Dealer vs self

Hope to complete pending formalities and taking home the Thar soon. Super excited.
This might be true to some extent. I had raised a request with Mahindra and got 2 calls, one from Mahindra Dealer in Chandigarh and second from Mahindra Dealer in Paonta-Sahib (Himachal). Petrol Thar and XUV700 will be delivered in under 2 months, both said - 40 to 45 days. Diesel Thar is 9 months, XUV700 Diesel is 6 months. I am thinking between Thar/XUV700 or Gurkha or kind of torn between these three.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Hey guys,

Thank you to all who posted their experiences with the Thar, it was really helpful and informative. Here's a summary of my booking - delivery - 1st impressions:

I booked Petrol AT Convertible - RED RAGE on May 25 in Chandigarh. At the time of booking the wait was 24-25 weeks.

Rationale for the variant - I test drove both diesel and petrol AT at the dealership. I found petrol to be more responsive and smoother in the gear shifts. My estimated mileage per year for the Thar is around 5000 Kms, so the better fuel efficiency of the diesel is not something that I pondered much with. Red Rage color because I wanted something fun, already have a black car in the driveway and it's a pain to keep it looking clean.

Booked it online after the test drives for 21K. Had 3 days to reconsider my decision if I wanted to cancel, but I had already made up my mind.

Delivery: Got a call from the dealer on Sept 20 that the car is allocated and en route from the factory. I confirmed with them that I am still interested in purchasing the car and they gave me an estimated date of arrival of the vehicle and asked me to come to the dealership to discuss finances.

The SA, wrote the final pricing on a rough piece of paper and told me these are approximate numbers. I was surprised that they didn't have a proper invoice generated for the delivery and why they would give me approximate value for registration/TCS etc. These values were much different from the Mahindra website invoice when I booked the vehicle. Insurance quotes are always vague and I was quoted 68K. I had already gotten a quote for 58K from ICICI Lombard and when I refused the dealer quote, he revised it to 57K for the same coverage with ICICI.

Payment: The dealer wanted full payment done asap after their call that the vehicle was dispatched from the factory. I was reluctant and told him I would clear finances only after a full PDI on the vehicle. Dealer reluctantly agreed to this and once PDI was done, payment cleared and I got the delivery.

First Impressions:

Engine and drive:
Took the Thar to the hills the very next day it arrived. The petrol engine handled the slopes effortlessly, but the thing that impressed me the most is the agility of the Thar, it is quick and gets in and out of tight curves very well. There is a bit of body roll, but as long as the speed is nominal, it's an afterthought. The lightweight of the Thar makes the handling seem more like a regular sedan than an SUV. The engine is very silent, barely noticeable inside the cabin.

Convertible Top:
This is the #1 feature why I got the Thar! I wanted the top-down experience in the hills and it was worth the wait. I had previously seen videos on how to open/close the mechanism and the first time I did it, took me 2-3 minutes to open the top and maybe a couple of minutes longer to close it. The mechanism is very simple to use, and the only thing that can prolong the time frame is getting the side panels to snap-in. Having repeated this process several times, it requires minimal effort.

The canvas top does make "flapping" sounds when you drive over 70 Kmph. The noise is primarily the plastic window hitting the sidebar that runs across the window. I added double-sided velcro tape to both of these and it has improved the acoustics inside the vehicle.

Interiors:
- Seats: Comfortable, fabric covers are adequate.
- Sound: Okay if you don't pump up the volume. Pump it up to 60-70% of max volume and you can hear the hollow bass. Also, the roof-mounted speakers are more dominant than the front ones. Definitely need to upgrade these at some point.
- Head Unit: Works fine 9 out of 10 times, sometimes hangs up on Carplay and will need a restart. Could've been a bit brighter but it's fine.

The only quirk I have is the really small cup holders in the middle.

Fuel Efficiency:
Perhaps this is a reason for the majority of folks why they opt for diesel over petrol. During my city-hills drive over the past week, I got FE of about 8 KMPL. I believe this to be the worst-case scenario as I was either in rush hour traffic or on the slopes.

However, I would recommend folks to estimate their mileage/year and then calculate how much extra they would spend on Petrol vs Diesel. But also factor in that diesel annual service is about 2-3K higher than petrol and it also requires the fuel additive.

Since my mileage will be around 5K/year, for me the petrol was the better option and it has better performance numbers all around compared to the diesel.

Here are a couple of pics, will post more later with updates.

Again, thanks to all who posted their reviews to make us better informed and good luck to all new perspective buyers.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I was trying to understand the shift patterns a bit in Thar AT. I tried to shift to 4H while the automatic gearshifter was in N and the gearbox didn't like it much. I then decided to read the manual - this is what I understand. Requesting seasoned offroaders to impart some wisdom in me.

2H->4H Gear lever: D
4H->N Gear lever: N
N->4L Gear lever: N

The above sequence is correct.
Not a seasoned off-roader. But below are the points I observed from few off-roading sessions
* Its better to shift to 4H or N or 4L at very low speeds (~2 to 5 kmph) after slotting the main transmission to N so that the teething is proper which is advised in manual IIRC.
* If teething is not proper (mostly in standstill) its difficult to engage 4L
* If you want to slot to 4L without any forward movement and you feel 4L is not engaging, reverse the vehicle a bit and try again.
The above points apply for vice versa situation where you want to shift back to 2H from 4L, N or 4H.
*2H to 4H and vice versa is relatively easier
As this is conventional BorgWarner transfer case a little practice is necessary in the initial stage.

Do you know how this would compare to Osram Night Breaker Laser H4?

Verbatim from the manual.

Vehicle is equipped with electric front axle disconnect (FAD). There may be
a slight delay and ratcheting noise while FAD is engaging as the splines
may not be aligned. This is normal

It is best to come to a complete stop, shift to neutral and then do the transfer case engagement.

I was told more than a couple of times to come to a complete stop before touching the 4x4 lever. What i found difficult was shifting to 4H when I was in N in the gear lever. I had to shift to D to switch the 4x4 lever to 4H. But then, for N and 4L on 4x4 lever, looks like I have to be in N in the gear lever

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Took delivery of Thar LX HT AT Diesel, Galaxy Grey yesterday.

Booked it on 30th July, 2021 via Dealership after a confusion with my booking via Mahindra's m2all.com. Got refund from m2all.com and Dealership booking was done with Rs 16000.

Dealership informed me about availability of a Grey Thar LX HT AT and I informed them of my interest for the variant.

Just an observation- The white lettering on the MRFs seem to not hold up well while the ones on CEATs seem a lot more robust. My MRFs lettering are almost black now.

Is there a way to maintain these white lettering?

New tires are coated with blue protective film to protect the white lettering. A thorough scrub with a big brush, mild hot water and detergent would remove the film.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

To fellow Thar AT owners, do you guys have slight amount of play on the brake pedal? In my Thar, I felt a bit of free play on the brake pedal. Is it normal, or should I contact the service center soon? Braking performance is absolutely normal. Just that, my Ecosport AT does not have any free play on the Brake pedal.

In my new Thar as well, on careful observation, I found the White lettering is already going black on the edges, the lettering are just superficial it seems, not incorporated in the sidewall material.

I had the same observation and the play seems to have increased after the 8000 or so KMs and 8 months of driving. I had an Ecosport too and the braking there was the other extreme - seemed a bit too abrupt!
