Re: Direct-To-Home television in India. Update DTH HD announced

DD Direct + : Where to buy and Few other Questions

Hi Guys,
I am planning to buy DDD+ dish + STB but am not sure where to but it. I am from Bangalore and inquired in a few shops, all they have is Tata Sky etc or recharges. Any pointers to where i can buy it *and* get it installed will be much appreciated. Bangalore (any shops closer to Vijayanagar will be bonus!).

Also, I am getting this mainly for my Parents, need it for Air Ragam the Carnatic Radio channel. Also, Is there a way of getting it w/o DDD+? Tata Sky does not provide any Radio Channels and after the shutdown of Worldspace, need something where we can get Carnatic stream/Channels.

Any other sources/ideas apart from the above is appreciated.

Thanks,
BB/Ash

If these are Free to Air (FTA) channels, you can install any local Dish bought from JC road etc with a FTA STB, just need to know the DD Satellite direction and angles to install it.(the shop guys know and install for a charge)

They have a reactivation charge, dont think there is a limit to the gap duration.

tatasky is much better in terms of service and response time, but airtel has more number of HD channels.Checkout dish tv also , they have some very good offers on DVR,they have additional facility of saving content on external harddisk

on that note - why is Tata Sky not increasing the number of HD channels? Airtel has MANY more HD channels now and increasing.

By the way I have both airtel (non-HD) and Tata sky (HD+). I like the picture in picture and universal remote of airtel, but I like Tata sky better in general.

Re: Direct-To-Home television in India. Update DTH HD announced

Hi everybody
I have been seeing a lot of ads about dish tv.
I would prefer hindi general entertainment channels, hindi and english movies and news like NDTV,Times Now,CNBC,ET NOW, and maybe a few more.In sports star cricket,ESPN and maybe a couple of other sports channels
Dont require a playback facility.
Need HD services.
Which would be better vis a vis initial cost and renewal charges.
Which has the best price for an addon connection.
Thanks a lot
Regards

read somewhere that tatasky's current satellite capacity is full, they may be hiring another satellite in the coming months so expect to see more HD channels then.

Hi
Thanks your reply.
Airtel website has an option of leaving our number for them to call.
I did that and it didnt work.About a year back tried to call their 24 hour no and could not get through. That has put me off airtel.
Thanks once again

For info,TataSKY has started the annual payment options for HD pack also(1 time payment of 11months).Earlier one had to recharge with Rs75 every month.I also enquired if they intend to start more HD channels, the executive on line said they'll start soon.I dont know how soon that will be!

Re: Direct-To-Home television in India. Update DTH HD announced

Just bought Airtel HD Dth (not HD Dvr) for myself, parents are using the old Airtel DTH from years and so far it's working flawlessly. Planning to get a 50" Plasma so thought of getting HD Dth, Airtel's universal remote was something i was used to, so i din't want to consider Tatasky. HD DVR is hiked to 5990 or so, i checked with their CC and came to know it is 320 GB hdd, i didn't feel it is worth to pay for it at this juncture, few months back it was 1000 rs less!
Anyways, my requirement was HD+5.1 dolby surround sound to connect to Denon Avr. I can use the optical out from stb box for sound to Denon and connect Hdmi to tv directly.
There is a festive offer going on, i got my Airtel HD DTH with free installation/delivery etc for Rs 2640/- along with 10 HD channels and South mega pack free for 2 months.
I called their DTH division through my airtel number on 12148 and asked for fresh connection, got this offer. I will be getting it installed by april first week.
They informed me that the offer is for limited time, so i booked it. Looked like a good deal currently compared to HD DVR prices! along with 10 HD channels and south mega plan free for 2 months!

Good Decision. Airtel is launching VOD and recording from the NON-DVR boxes using USB port itself (you will need the recording remote though), watch out for these by first week of April(or before).

Some more HD channels are also coming up from the Zee channel.

Re: Direct-To-Home television in India. Update DTH HD announced

My Airtel DTH HD interface changed suddenly today.
- They have changed the font and the look of the user interface. Looks much cleaner and crisper now.
- It even shows a 'recording' function now (mine is not DVR)...checked it up and lo and behold I can record if I have a 8GB USB drive (there's another option with 80GB USB).
- Zee TV HD has been included in the HD list (I am yet to ADD it).
- The menu no longer shows the little box at top right corner which allowed a preview of the running program on the selected channel.

Anything else that I missed?

Thats in preparation of the VoD service and enabling USB for recording, as I posted before.

Apart from the smooth interface, the firmware release 402 :

- Corrects the sound level differences between HD(Dolby 5.1) and non-HD channels.
- The Genre (Green) button lets you filter the channels (as it says:News, Movies, HD etc)
- Incase of STB power reset, now you no longer come back to the last viewed channel, it takes you to the ch.100 by default, which is bad since it was a great feature in earlier version 301.
- Recording for Non-HD DVR enabled through USB, needs a recording remote + >8 GB drive to record onto.
- Noticed some Pixelation in Star Gold HD channel, might be a one-off signal loss, otherwise will need another release to correct.
- Signal strength and Quality has improved (as displayed in the menu).
