Cool trick.

Similarly, if you press GPS status on home screen for some seconds it shows detailed GPS stats. E.g. location of satellites + current location / altitude accuracy.

Thanks folks. We were waiting for Garmin hacks - why not! I am wondering if there is some users group dedicated to the Garmin?

Android users can check out this nifty app called Open GPS tracker which logs trips you made and puts an overlay over google maps to show average speeds done and a few other details

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

After playing around with Open Street Maps for a few days, I finally ordered Garmin maps from Satguide today. This was because I had received a mail from a Garmin team member saying that an updated version of their maps would be released on 1st May 2011. Hence I had put my map purchase on hold till today.

EDIT : Exactly two minutes after I placed my order, I received an email (not an automated reply) from a Satguide exec saying that they will ship my order today itself. Hows that for customer service!

Is this an updated version of Satguide maps for Garmin or about maps (navteq) from Garmin?

Apologies, I meant the Satguide team member. Navteq maps are still too expensive for me to be considered VFM.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

no probs, there seems to be some mix-up on Satguid's end. Called them up to check for an update for Garmin maps. Sales rep mentioned that Garmin update would be out next month.

Please let us know version of the maps once you get them. Ones that I have are Feb 2011 (Purchased in April).

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Drove to Pune, had these three maps among us:

1. Satguide Feb 2011 (My Garmin Unit, 265 W)
2. MMI's latest maps on Android
3. Navteq's 2011 Q1 maps on Nokia N8

Overall, in Mumbai/Pune

1. MMI has highest number of POIs, but quite a few errors
2. Navteq is most accurate
4. Satguide is middle of the path.

Overall, ALL three have improved dramatically as compared to 2010 versions. I have used Navteq maps on Garmin in US and UK. Coverage of Mumbai is quite close to US Metros like LA or NYC.

In next couple of years, top 100 cities in India should have similar coverage.

Old Maps on my Satguide ?

Folks, I ordered Satguide maps for my Garmin Nuvi 265W , a few days ago.

The process was fairly smooth, the package arrived on time but I didnt check it until today morning because of a hectic work schedule.

It came in this neatly looking "CD" cover. No version mentioned here though.

Since it came on a micro SD card, and I have a SD slot, I had to get this adapter from the neighbourhood shop for Rs.15. I am not entirely convinced that it was brand new, but would do for now.

However, I was in for a shock when I checked out the maps...!

It says 19Feb2010! Is it a typo on their end ? Or should I contact their customer care and have this rectified ? The gmapsupp file on the card shows the create date as 23rdFeb 2011.

What is size of gmapsupp? On my device it shows Feb 2011. Call customer care to resolve this. Most probably it is a typo in latest version.

They will send a link to download latest maps.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Anyone used the MayMyIndia maps (Sygic MobileMaps India) on iPhone 4? What's the feedback? Is it fast enough on the iPhone?

Currently I use Google maps on the iPhone and like it a lot. The only obvious issue is that it does not work in remote places which do not have GPRS coverage. So I have to resort to caching the entire route on the Maps application before leaving the house.

Yes its a typo. Checked latest update and it does have this header:

Quote:
V: 3066-19FEB10-OneIndia (0)
U: XXXXXX
F: PID X, FID XXXX, INDIA_STREET_MAP
Though this is the latest map.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Last weekend I moved to Garmin City Navigator India 2011 maps on my nuvi 2300 unit. I stay in BTM Layout Bangalore and it lists almost all the POIs near my place. I entered the home address of my friend in Mysore and it seemed to route correctly. Maps are accurate. Anybody else using these maps?
