Motorola is chucking its tough to use non-smartphone OS P2K in favour for linux possibly with dual interface (Chameleon interface) developed by trolltech

the current RAZR is P2k os, WHILE THE REPLACEMENT WILL BE LINUX BASED.

my e680i has USB1.1 connectivity. And no drivers needed when connecting to the pc. some major features are

charging through usb ( now very common)
mass storage (lika a portable Hard drive)
Carry and listen to music anywhere anytime
ms-office documents (viewable on the phone too) and plug-in anywhere
Quick file transfers between pc and phone through USB

the only problem with the phone is that I am not yet able to get to learn linux modding. Its majorly my fault coz I am not devoting enough time.

ANYbody who can help here with LInux Montavista?

Some of the superb mods carried out by programmers are

vga to 1.3mp cam (No interpolation)
vga Video recording
music softwares for linux like WINAMP
game like Quake and Doom (This one has Graphics processing unit too)

I will try to put up a detailed review soon after I learn.

How reliable are SE phones. my borther in law's W800 and my friends K750 have given them trouble. The W800's walkman button does not work anymore and the battery shows ciritcally low in any mode but the walkman mode. in walkman mode it shows normal. The K750 turns itself off and on erratically. Both phones have visited various repair shops incl the official one in Andheri (East), Mumbai.

Another friends P910's phone died (albeit slowly) when he dropped a glass of water on it. He is still a SE fan and is waiting for the P990.

In contrast my son dunked my wife's 7610 in a glass of water. It still works. My 6230i was dropped many times with no problems. That gives me a lot of faith in Nokia (might be misplaced).

Or is it that the new phones with cameras and MP3 players and touch screens are more fragile? My O2 Atom just feels less solid than my 6230i. It's plastics, battey case etc... just dont inspire the same level of confidence.

No brand of phone is bad.

I have used many brands from Ericsson, panasonic, nokia, trium, motorola, siemens, Imate/O2, sonyericsson, lg, samsung etc

My take is this. There is no much of a difference between any brand. Except if the company has just taken a plunge into the mobile phone business( for ege LG's quality 3 years ago)

I dont go for a brandname but something in a phone that is exclusive and different is my choice. ( N-gage, p910i, siemens sx1, e680i etc)

people scared the Sh*t outta me in India saying siemens is bad. That made me go want the sx1 even more. I didnt regret my decision.

I have had a lg slider breakdown, A motorola E365 shut down by water, A nokia 3530 go crazy and a buggy samsung c100. I dont find any kind of relation with the breakdown related to the brand.

Dev, I hope you are right. I am so looking forward to a long and ineventful relationship with my next mobile phone (SE P990) when it comes. After months of using my O2 Atom I really miss a tactile numeric keypad. I'm too old for these touch screen controls.

My first post in this thread. Currently I have a Samsung E600, which replaced the earlier Samsung E715 that replaced the earlier Samsung SCH 8500... you get the idea. I have been a Samsung user since 2000, mobile user since 1999 when I started with a Motorola phone which was a piece of junk. Not a frequent changer, still on my 4th phone in 7 years.

My cellphones have to be clamshell type and small enough to fit in my jeans pant front pocket sharing place with my car keys. That explains why Samsung has been my favourite vendor, they make the smallest clamshell phones. While they make very sturdy/small cellphones, can't say much about the features and software, quite pathetic actually.

Right now I am looking for a change and I am having Nokia N71 in my viewfinder. Yes, it is bigger/heavier than my usual phones, but I feel my pocket can accommodate it, the features are worth it. I like the positives, but are there any negatives? I saw some review where it said that the folded part has some play because of average hinge quality. Also, any idea about the price in India.

Yes samurai, what the reviews say is not totally wrong. Also depends on how careful one is. Its about 20-21k (with warranty) here in Mumbai.
A good review site is www.ndtvgadgets.com
Hope this helps.
Cheers!!!

Ok guys,

Whats are the Nokia options upto 17000 Rs ? And which will be the best amongst the lot. Also I need to know worthy opponents of the Nokia in that price range that I can suggest strongly as the user has been a Nokia fan since the day he made his 1st call on a cell phone.

Features required -
1) MP3 player
2) Radio
3) Camera (not much use but hoga toh chalega)
4) A large memory (though a card will be added later on)

Help me out fast - Its going to be an Independence Day gift, need to finalise before evening.

thanks
