Some good news on the above topic. The gang involved in above mentioned incident (and many other robberies) got nabbed.

Want to travel to Iritty over the weekend.
What would be the best route to take? How are the road conditions and travel times?

Also, how safe evening travel is in the light of the recent robbery news?

How is the KRS road? Is the road open or traffic and in decent condition?

Mysore road > Srirangapatna > Hunsur > Gonikkoppa > Virajpet > Iritty is the best route now I guess.
KRS road was open to traffic when I last travelled in June.

travelled this route last month, roads are good but speed will be limited due to the ghat section, you might want to consider that into your estimates.

Is KRS road the better option compared to Mysore ORR?
I hope the route is safe for a late evening drive. I'm traveling with my aging mother. So, slightly concerned.

ORR is better, but longer by ~ 6KM
KRS road is rough at many places with potholes at some places. Late evening drive is not an issue on both ORR and KRS road. Drive slow if you are taking KRS road, saw some repair work happening on this stretch during my return journey last week.

I agree with what Latheesh said. KRS road is rough.
The only one time that I did a night drive, I took the Mysore ORR. So can't comment on the KRS road.

Drove back to Bangalore via KRS road last week, the road is open and has bad patches for about 7-8 kms. Some potholes are huge, so one needs to be very careful, better avoided during night.

Just bumping up an old thread. Wanted to check in on the road condition from Bangalore to Kannur as I am planning to drive down tomorrow. Will be taking the regular Gonnikoppal, Makkuta route. Any recommendations from any of the folks who might have done the route recently?

Did Bangalore - Kannur yesterday, left Ecity @2.30 PM and reached home (Kannur) @ 10.45 PM. Total 8 h 15 min including 1 hour break.

KRS road is bad take ORR instead, it is a better option.

Need to travel from Bangalore -> cherupuzha in a sedan ( City ) this weekend. From previous comments could make out that from Blr - srirangapatna-hunsur-gonikoppal-Iritty is good. Google says shortest route is via Ullikal-Payyavoor-Chemperi-Alakode-Therthally-cherupuzha. Anybody recently travelled this section and any road conditions for this stretch ( Ullikal-Payyavoor-Chemperi-Alakode-Therthally ). Thanks.

Did this trip onwards last Sunday and return on Monday.

On Sunday, started at around 2pm from east Bangalore and hit Iritty around 8:30 with a 30 minutes tea break post the turn off from Madikeri road towards Gonikoppal. Roads are amazing all through, except that it took an hour to cover an unusual Sunday Bangalore city traffic and the pretty bad stretch of KRS road. Gonikoppal-Virajpet stretch is a pleasure to drive. Drive through the Perumbadi ghat section in the night and mild rain was little scary with folks in the opposite direction coming in the middle of the road at full throttle. KRS road is to be avoided at any cost. It's pretty bad.

Return trip was on Monday around 2 from Iritty. Reached Bangalore east around 9pm with 30 minutes Neer Dosa break at Kamat, Channapatna. Man, weren't they delicious? Missed the Gonikoppal turn at Virajpet. So, had to take a detour from Ammathi through narrow and pothole ridden estate/village roads. Same way, took a wrong turn and joined back to KRS road from Mysore ORR. Not sure whether the Bangalore direction marking on the ORR was wrong or I read it wrongly. Mysore road drive was painful as usual thes days.

Halted at M2H Residency, Iritty overnight. Decent place with sufficient comforts. 1200 INR a night for an AC double room. Had breakfast at the restaurant of the Hotel. It was pretty good.

Ullikal-Payyavoor-Chemperi-Alakode stretch is not good with ridden and pothole roads. Thinking of returning from cherupuzha via pannathur - kukke - NH 48. Any info about Pannathur - kukke stretch?. Thanks.
