re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Saw two interesting movies over the weekend

The Adjustment Bureau

Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. A nice romantic movie with a Sci-Fi spin. Its a fast paced movie and is a good watch.

Rating: 3.5/5

The Lincoln Lawyer
Starring Mathew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei, its a thriller about a smarta$$ defense lawyer who works for the criminals has a uprising of conscience during a case and how he works on it. If I say anything more, I'll be revealing the plot. Good movie. I really liked it.

Rating: 4/5

Bridesmaids

Stale story. Strictly average.

Rating: 2.5/5

The most overrated movie ever. I heard so many good things about this movie and when i went to see it. i was like all the time. The trailers were far better than the movie.

Machine Gun Preacher (2011) - IMDb

Based on a true story on the life of Sam Childers, an ex-rogue who finds his life's calling in helping children in Africa.
Excellent justice done to the role of Sam Childers by Gerard Butler, ably assisted by the African cast as well as the gorgeous Michelle Monaghan.

My rating : 4/5

Add Sir Anthony Hopkins & Alec Baldwin starrer The Edge also to this list. Awesome movie and awesome cinematography. Watch it guys if you havent already.

Another "different" type of man&animal movie is Hidalgo which is about a horse and its rider participating an endurance racing competition in middle east. Its quite nice movie as well.

re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Saw two wonderfully interesting movies this weekend --
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
A refreshing adaptation by Guy Ritchie of the original Sherlock Holmes (the original Holmes, I felt, was bit of a stiff upper lip. Action-packed (its how I like them), engaging and retains the 'elementary' conversations between Holmes and Watson, except that Watson seems to be sharper than Holmes at times (which I liked).
Rating: 4/5

Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
A beautiful story, based on true life, about a dog's bonding with his owner. A must watch for every dog lover. What disappointed me after the movie was the fact that the true story was from Japan and this movie adapted it in the American context. Would have loved even more if it was entirely shot in a Japanese context. For that I'll reduce a .5 from my rating. Otherwise beautifully shot and edited.
Rating: 3.5/5

MIB 3

This is a total timepass movie.
Just like MIB1 and 2, there's nothing especially outstanding about the story or anything, but I know that whenver this will be on the telly, I will watch it.
Its a fun movie.

Tommy lee jones takes a backseat in this one, with Will smith travelling back in time to meet a younger Agent K.

This helps, because TLJ himself is starting to look like an alien!!

Do go watch.

One good reason for releasing movies in 3D is; it puts an immediate end to these cheap rip offs from Cinema halls using high quality video cameras.

you cant keep a 3D glass infront of the camera lens to record the movie and expect viewable quality, can you?

Saw 'The Water Horse' on Monday on TV. Its story of the famous "Loc Ness Monster" and how a young boy adores him in the backdrop of WWII.

Awesome movie, superb locales of Scotland and great special effects in creating the lovable monster.

Must watch - 5/5

Watched Drive

I had high hopes but it turned out to be Lame. They tried so hard to not make another Transporter that they completely lost it.

The story is about a Stunt Driver who also doubles as a Transporter sometimes & who also decides to become Rally Driver (Actually it was not clear what he actually wanted to do really). The rest of the story is quite boring, the girls husband comes back from Jail, he wants to be a good guy but the bad guys don't let him be, Hero tries to help & gets involved much more than he planned to.

Its based on a Novel, may be they interpret it wrongly or maybe it the screenplay was bad. The character portrayals & storyline is pretty lame.

1.5/5

Transporter is an all out action movie, while Drive isn't. I don't think Transporter has any influence. Also the budget of Drive is around 1/3 rd of Transporter.
Drive has surprisingly high rating in IMDB. What works for Drive are,
  • Simple straight forward story with minimalist cast
  • Terrific background score with some choicest music
BTW, I agree that its quite funny on how the lead actor wins staring contests.
