In that case, I think I should be fine. My wife is travelling to the US next month and will be there for a couple of months - she will need a US number. In that case, she can buy the phone and activate it with one of them and then come back to India where I can use it with Indian carriers. Will that work?

Yes, it will work. As long as the phone has universal bands and is not carrier locked. Ask her to take a pre paid from At&T or T mobile

Temporarily, purchased a Mi A2 and using it. Was planning to purchase Pixel 3a (from the bestbuy for $299) but now with OnePlus 7 release last night, I am confused.
Here are my options:
1. Pixel 3a or 3a XL
2. Oneplus 7
3. Wait for Oneplus 7t
4. Extend the budget and get OnePlus 7 Pro
5. Or extend the budget further and get S10 series (especially for their lovely email app. Samsung fan from Galaxy S2 days - S2, Note 2, Tab 2, S5, S7 edge, S8 and other phones in between).

P.S: Also, if anyone can suggest an Android app that is as good as that of Samsung's native email app? My major requirement is the selective folder sync.
Quoting my own post. Here is an article that makes sense -

HDFC cards are quite common. Some of your friend/colleagues should have it. Just swipe on their card and pay them back.

Or else you can share your delivery address with me via PM and I will order it using my HDFC card. You can then transfer the amount to my bank account.

There seems to be an additional Rs.1000 off in exchange of 20 Flipkart Plus coins. Check that out too.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Looking for a phone to replace my 2 year old Moto Z2 Play. The phone is suffering from a failed proximity sensor and has also developed a battery bulge recently.

The primary requirement for me is exactly what phones are meant for, calls. In general I spend about 3 hours on average each day speaking to people (some of those calls could be 1-1.5 hours). Therefore:

* Headphone port is mandatory - I understand there's a trend to get rid of it.
* Functional bluetooth with lots of audio clarity (I hook a personal BT speaker).
* Call recording (and generally, voice/conversation recording).

Has to be dual SIM and must be able to take an SD card (ie, can't be a phone where you can have only one of second SIM or SD card).

Hotspot needs to give good signal strength and range.

External connections support - in particular, Android Auto and Android Wear.

Battery life should be good (two days is too much to hope for?). I write emails and edit documents, use a bunch of specialized apps meant for work-related stuff (Slack, Asana, Trello...), surf the web or read content via Feedly all the time.

Stock Android only. Can't teach myself new tricks now.

Good GPS/location support for navigation & Uber.

Prefer Type C port for charging/OTG.

I'm not much of a gamer; I have a couple of small arcade games (Slitherlink is what I play now) and that's it. Similarly camera quality isn't of any consequence to me.

I like Motorola; but it seems like the Z4 is not due in India soon? I'm OK to wait for a couple of months but any longer and my productivity will suffer.

I could go up to 35K and a bit more for the right phone. But the Galaxy S10 is way above my budget.

Suggestions?

I think Moto One Power fits your requirements. Not ultimate specs but has headphone jack, dedicated memory card slot (as per GSM arena), huge battery, Bluetooth etc. Take a look at it and see if it works and it's about 1/3rd of your budget.

Thank you. Have a month to decide on this. While the OnePlus 7 launch price is too good, cost difference comes to about 12K INR (compared to 3A's selling price in the US).

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

My 10 months old samsung galaxy note 9's screen cracked a couple of days ago. Although it is just a small crack and doesnt hamper the display at all, just wanted to enquire how much would a new screen cost ? And since it is in warranty, will replacing through samsung give any advantage. Im open to aftermarket screens also, provided they perform as good as the OEM one.

So very kind of you man . Totally appreciate your very kind gesture. I am putting this up on the "Good Samaritans" thread on TBHP

But:

I am still torn between the 3A and the OP7 in India. I looked up a camera review between the OP6T and the 3A, and the 3A blows it out of the water. I mean, there wasnt even a comparison, I had to laugh at whatever was taken by the 6T.

Specs wise the OP7 blows the 3A out of the water. But at the end of the day, numbers mean one thing, and every day usability is whole different paradigm.

I looked up my usage, and this is what I see going on:
1. Lots of reading
2. Navigation using Gmaps
3. Plenty of Youtube
4. Lots of photography
5. No gaming
6. No working off the phone
7. My daily phone usage for calls is probably like 10 minutes max.
8. Out of 64 GB in my current phone (32+32), I have used about 30 GB, and I can't seem to use more.

I use an old (2017!) first gen Moto Z Play with a 625, and I find it pretty good for my needs. If it had a pixel level camera, I probably don't see any reason to switch. However lately, I do see it stuttering and slowing down here and there, hence its aggravated my desire to move on.

The way I am beginning to see it is:

If you want a great camera, and an okay phone - Pixel 3A.
If you want a great phone, and an okay camera - OP7.

Knowing Google, I expect them to throw more and more camera related updates for the Pixel series as we go along.

Would this be the right inference?

That is my second phone (I'm one of those who keep 2+ phones). It is a bit slower, bulkier & heavier than the Z2 Play, and most importantly doesn't support split screen which is also a showstopper requirement for the kind of stuff I do (I think split screen is not supported on Android One at all).

From what I understand - No, not possible.
It has to be one physical sim and one esim.

I am not sure whether this is correct. I am using Mi A1 which runs on Android One and split screen is supported.

We have the same problem. I am leaning more towards OP7. Reason - Google's camera is more on the software side of things and not the hardware. XDA has lot of threads on Pixel Camera App port to other devices and looks like, any phone can be as good as Pixel's photo quality provided it has the right hardware. Now with the 48MP Sony in OP7, I don't think it should be a problem (see if port is available for your current phone as well).

All we have to do is to root the device and install the new app and use the app for taking photos. Just added more to your confusion.

@binand, as kavensri said, android one does support Split screen. I use Mi A2 (android one as well) currently and it does support. To use split screen, go to the multi-tasking window and click on the app icon, you will have the split screen option (I hope One Power is in 9.x version).

I have categorized your requirements based on the following
  • Performance - go for OnePlus 7 or 6T as they are very good when it comes to performance
  • Battery life - OnePlus's dash charging (or whatever they call it now) is too good. Had a OnePlus 3 and currently have a OnePlus 5T at home
  • 3.5MM jack - 6T comes with converter which you can leave it attached to the headphone. If you have multiple headphones, these connectors are available online for a small amount
  • Storage - Get the top spec (256GB) and do data transfer to the system once in a while or better move it to cloud
  • Other features - Stock android, Split screen etc., - OnePlus is more of stock android and doesn't need a learning curve (maybe to explore it more but for normal functionality, it is the same as stock android)

P.S: I haven't suggested Samsung (though it has a headphone jack) because its charging speed and the way it holds charge will not match for your requirement.

I bought Galaxy A70 recently for 29k with 2k cashback from HDFC and Uflex earphone for 1k(2.5k discount). Might fit most of your requirements. I am fine with the phone so far.
