Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Guys, I laugh at myself when people here discuss 8GB vs 4GB RAM and 64GB storage because mine has got 4GB as storage of which 3.6 GB is consumed by OS. I am left with 400 MB space, barely enough for basic apps like gmail. WhatsApp and Facebook are forbidden.

It is a first generation Moto-E first batch of flash sale, grand daddy died a couple of times but I managed to resurrect him from death with all geeky things I know. He is still going strong except the battery is giving up. I am in no mood to replace battery because the replacement cost is way higher than value of phone if any. Will make a clone copy and squeeze every drop of juice left

Mind telling us how to deal with "Google Play Services" which keeps on inflating itself and its storage requirements,, like a pretty politician's ego? In one of my family member's phones, it was taking up 1GB! On my Galaxy A8+, with latest firmware, that app gobbles up 400 odd MB.
On a different note, wife ordered a M30, 6+128GB version on Sunday. Yesterday, they launched the M40. Sigh!

This is not RAM usage. This is installation size (it goes from your 64 GB or whatever storage - the "other" number reported in GB in your device's spec sheet).

Obviously. And lack of storage will prevent s/w and app upgrades. Wife was using some Lenovo (2 phones, both with internal memory choked up). On one of these, WhatsApp folded up on Sunday forcing her decision. And I have a certificate from the 11 year old that no further settings can be tweaked. (There is no move to SD card feature in that version of Android). And I'm in no mood to teach him rooting at this age. Or do it myself.

And the family member was using a Huawei. With 16 GB or so of internal storage. With 1 GB free, she updated WhatsApp and is now happy.

Nothing you can do. You sold your soul to Google. Pay the price!

You don't need more than 64GB, does not mean it applies for everybody. 4 GB RAM feels future proof to you not to me (particular when you can get 8GB at lower prices). Dragontrail glass feels same to you as Gorilla glass - to me all Glass feels the same but that does not make them same. And having owned a Pixel earlier, I hope that your device does not have a problem - the google service in India is worse than terrible.

Having said all that, you also seem to say that it is not worth more than 25k!
That's what I was saying, peace!
Having owned, Nexus 5, 5x and now the Pixel 2 with wife using the OP6T.

Google gives home service in India, which means you do not need to visit a service centre. If your phone needs repairing, an equivalent or a higher version is given to you for daily usage. The service is prompt and fast.

Used it twice and still in touch with the area manager who is courteous and empathetic.

3a at 40k (36k if you have HDFC card) make sense if you are an Android purist who likes image quality above all. IMHO, if the pixel doesn't lag and it has a better camera than OPT7 then it makes hell more sense.

OPT7 is no more a true flagship killer, it is OPT7Pro and at that price, i'd prefer the XR or Pixel 3.

I am on Oneplus phones for quite sometime and I was inclined to move to a pixel recently. But after viewing/reading the reviews from some of the top reviews I dropped the idea. The one surprising aspect that came out in the reviews was how most of them tend to think OnePlus oxygenos is better than the stock Android. I don't think I heard that comment for any other brand of Android. If camera is the only priority then pixel 3a may be a better choice but if that's not the case then OnePlus 6T and 7 seems more value for money. I have 6t and I have tried 7 and 7 pro from my colleagues and 7 pro feels incredibly heavy. And 6T is not that light as well. Pixel 3a should be comfortable at 147g if that matters.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Finally took the plunge and got myself an Oppo Reno 10x Zoom 6/128 GB variant in the Ocean Green trim. Man does the phone look beautiful !!

Got a sweet deal with an additional 4k exchange bonus from Flipkart.

It is a bit heavy but quite manageable. I am pretty sure I will get used to it's dimensions soon.

So far so good, I am pretty impressed. Here's a little first look by Floss Carter and his cat White Shoes:

Congrats Oxy! Request you to please post your initial impressions on the phone and again after a few days too. How do you find the screen in outdoor use?

Which phone were you using earlier?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Cyborg. My previous phone was the LG G7+ ThinQ, and the Oppo is a genuine upgrade over that in every sense due to:

1. Amoled screen compared to IPS LCD.
2. In display fingerprint reader.
3. Bigger battery.
4. Triple rear camera set up compared to dual.
5. Latest Snapdragon 855 chipset vs SD 845.
6. Dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.

I have not had the chance to use the phone outdoors yet but I am sure it is going to be better than my previous phone in direct sunlight.

The potential not so good things include questionable regularity in updates and Oppo's Color OS skin which won't suit everyone's taste. Oneplus's Oxygen OS is much better than the Color OS UI. But other than that, I find this to be a very competent phone.

Hi Oxy, I believe LG G7+ has quad dac which enhances the audio quality over earphones (I use a LG V30+). How is the quality of audio over earphones in Oppo Reno?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

For those planning to buy a new phone (especially the Galaxy S series) now would be the right time. Amazon offers additional discount on exchange. My Mi A2 (purchased for 11500), exchange price is 11,200 whereas for most of the other phones it is 5500. The discount varies between S10E and S10 as well.

Technically, I can get the S10 for 50K after losing pennies (300rs) for the phone I already paid for. Sounds like a good deal. Is it better than OP 7 or 7 Pro?

I took the plunge. I guess the greed for better camera and 'keeda' of trying out something new overcame the rational thinking. Guess what I bricked my beautiful phone !

While I mourn the demise of my Moto G5 Plus, I must start for an alternative. My requirements are as follows:
  • Good camera (ideally pixel but shouldn't cost that much)
  • Costing not more than 30K
  • Software Updates (security and android OS)
  • Clean UI (have used MIUI in the past and recently saw lots of Adware) - prefer not!
  • Should serve me around 2 years at least.
  • I prefer slim width phones (Moto G5plus had good width)

Bricked devices can be bought back to life, i have done it earlier with Motox and Oneplus.

What happens when you boot the phone? black screen?

Can you get into Bootloader or fastboot mode?

Yes don't give up just yet. Most bootloops can be fixed by doing a flash via fastboot.

Absolute worst case, a jtag flash will restore most bricked phones.

Try searching for jtag flashers locally. Again, in the worst case contact Josh Groce on XDA. You've to arrange for to/fro shipping to the US but he recovers most bricked phones.
