Are you sure of this? The i20 with a 1.4L engine weighs more than that. I think the weight is close to 1200 Kgs as far as I know.

Am not saying that it is not useful, but the point is that, these curtain airbags are of little use in case of a head-on collision. In case of the car rolling over, yes, these airbags are very useful. IMO, most of the accidents in India are due to front collision & the rear seated passengers are pushed forward towards the front seat in these cases. See this video for instance:

Of course its a higher segment car and has better handling than the verna. I was actually comparing it with Jetta and Laura. I was going to book the Cruze yesterday, but I didnt like the rear headroom, the cruze feels really cramped at the rear and I thought if i'm paying 15.5 lacs I should get a car with the rear headroom as well. Any suggestions for me, I'm looking for a car which has a CRDi engine, good handling and ride quality, good head and legroom and well the list is a bit big, but I hope you get the idea

I dont wanna buy fiat because we dont get good service neither the parts are available quickly in our city.

I doubt the reliability of hyundai CRDI engines especially their VGT turbos are prone for failure

I think that you should consider the fact that new jetta is about to launch this year end. May be you can wait few more months for new models to be launched.

Guys when a company is giving u extra safety features,we should be happy,instead of debating its good or no.always more safety is always welcomed in a country like india where people are very rash in their driving styles,iam sure vento owners will debate and will try to make themself happy by saying things missing in their car is ok.But frankly speaking iam very very happy what verna offers,its features are un matched,Very xcited about my New verna...Still a month to go.We read everyday how many young people are dying of car accidents,maybe if their car had better safety features they would have survived.Well i forgot to mention,i loved the sporty steering of the verna,not too big and not too small,felt similar size of my civic.

Any idea about the OE tyres to be provided with Verna? I did notice the Bridgestones, but the salesman did refer to Appollo Accelere as well since it comes with i20 as a factory fitment. Can someone comment if they have some info about this.

True. Having an all disc brake car is a re-assuring feeling when on the high way. But one should also remember that the vehicle that follows you may not have this feature, before banging the brake.

I don't know if there would be more than option in the tires for the Verna (in the 1.4 & 1.6 base models)

But, the Sx & Sx(O) models all seemed to have the Bridgestone B250 195/55/R16 Tires on them.

My brother, who is anti-Hyundai was impressed with new verna. For first time for any hyundai he said, 'dil khush ho gaya dekh ke' (very happy after seeing this). could be our next sedan. he is looking forward to test drive scheduled next week.

he says, price difference in baroda between the old verna sx and new verna sx is not much. very minor increase for additional feature and better engine with safety and looks.

Test drove both the petrol and diesel 1.6 today. Diesel is obviously more punchy and makes sense after yesterday's price hike
Did not like the rear seat, too low, not comfortable. Rear legroom is pretty good. Front armrest worked well for me, felt comfortable. However, not at all useful for short people.
Steering felt lifeless, did not like it (Palio is the current daily drive).
SX is packaged really well, total value for money. Still, would wait for the Fiesta and decide, not in a hurry. Waiting is 1 month for the Petrol and 1.5 months for the Diesel in my city.

The GC of 165mm may be a bit low considering the long wheel base.

Today went I went for another test drive strapped in the rear seat. The seat belts held on not letting me jump up 2cm to hit the roof. This is despite a very rash driver with the wheel. Maybe less than 0.1 % will drive like that, testing GC over humps, body roll with quick steering zigzag, almost always going beyond 3krpm with a great engine roar. Sure, I had to hang on to the handles, while the sales staff accompanying us must have had a jobless dream. No underbody scrapes.

Braking seems to be just enough during the above drive. My i10 with uprated tyres seems to brakes sharper. Guess a tyre upgrade from the B250 will be required.

Another interesting thing is that the instantaneous fuel efficiency was 8-9 during his mad acceleration and returned 18+ during his reasonable speeds.

Measured the GC with a tape. it stood at 165 and did not seem to reduce much with 5 people sitting in the car.

The orvm adjustability is great with it being able to focus near the mid pillar of the car at the extreme position with a clear view of the rear tyre.

Testing the reverse camera against the showroom wall, I had the concerned showroom staff waving and running at me with a look. The red graduation corresponded to about 150mm of space from the wall. Little did he know that i usually park my i10 with 2-3cm from the wall in reverse.

Bangalore prices are shocking comparing to the other places. :(

The rear bumper had a big 25 cm horizontal crack with someone rear ending it. Did not seem too durable or strong

Caution: Long post, read at liesure

Today evening at 05:45pm I got a call from Kundan Hyundai asking if I can come down to their showroom for a TD of the CRDi SX model. Was pleasantly surprised on hearing this. I said I would be reaching there by 06:30pm (showroom is just 3kms from my house). The Sales Exec (SE) said the showroom is open even on Sundays upto 07:00pm. Took the whole family together (Daughter, Wife, Mom & Dad). A crystal white Demo Car was waiting outside the showroom just for me. Called up the SE & I said I am besides the demo car. Till he came I was drooling over the meaty 16" alloys, they are simply awesome. The big discs with the calipers stand apart. The front bumper seemed to be low slung & almost kissing the ground (as the car was standing on a rough patch of land).

The SE came by & handed over the keys to me. This being SX model, I had to insert the key in the ignition position.Demo car had clocked 500+ kms. As the engine came to life, there was almost "pin drop silence", the engine was hardly audible. Started the car with the reverse gear by pressing the knob, as I had to take it on the road in reverse. The IRVM display of reverse camera is too good. I think this is "the" feature of this car & worth all the moolah. We were six in the car (5 of my family & the SE). The car pulled effortlessly with the AC on full blast. The gear shift was quite smooth. The car builds up momentum after 1500 rpm, & beyond 2000K it is a real beast (I could feel the adrenaline rush). With 6 people onboard & AC ON, the way in which the car pulled was simply superb. (Just imagine a man used to driving a Normally Aspirated Indica V2 for 7 years, the feeling was beyond imagination). Within a couple of seconds I was cruising at 3 digit speeds (fortunately the roads were empty). People in back seat were asking the speed, & with a wide grin I uttered, it is 100kmph.

We had already covered 10 kms & I asked the SE if I can divert the car to my house just to check if this beast can be accommodated in my apartment parking. He nodded willingly. This car was really turning heads. When I entered my parking kids came running by asking if I had purchased this vehicle (poor chaps didn't notice the demo car decals on either sides). Just when I was checking the car the SE phone rang, asking him to get back to the show-room as other customers were waiting for the TD. With a heavy heart I had to drive back to the showroom & thus came an end to the dream run.

Couple of observations:
1. The much talked about rear seat under thigh support (this is the thorn in the neck), though ladies didn't complain about it, Dad who is 5'9" cribbed about it. Fortunately most of the times he would be in the co-drivers seat & this shouldn't be a deal breaker.
2. The rear visibility did not cause me much of a problem.
3. The 16 inchers fill up the wheel wells, leaving very little gap. Now the suspension being tuned on the softer side I am a bit apprehensinve about the tyres rubbing against the well, when car is fully loaded.
4. The front bumper bottom is exactly 185 mm above the ground level (measured with a tape). So for a car with GC of 165mm as said earlier, there would be some parts at a level even lower than the front bumper, couldn't make out as it was dark.
5. When the ignition is turned on, the dash is illuminated with the blue-white light for day running (This is also a very handy feature). When the parking light is turned on the dash light dims quite a bit. In most of the cars I have observed that the instrument cluster is illuminated only when the parking light is turned on along with the key in ignition position.
6. The boot is humungous & the spare wheel is an alloy.
7. When I was cruising @ 80 in 5th gear on an open road, a bicycle chap suddenly made a right turn from nowwhere. The SE had his heart in his mouth, but not me. The brakes are damn good & the car behave well under sudden braking. Whole credit to the all 4 discs, ABS with EBD

Now the price for CRDi SX model:
Ex-showroom (Pune) - 9,34,500
Octroi (2%) - 18,609
Insurance - 34,040
RTO Individual - 66,723
Other charges - 6,000
3rd Year Extnd Warranty - 9,035 (Std warranty is for 2 years, ????kms as the SE didn't know the exact figures)
Total Individual - 10,68,988

If I opt for my own insurance (transferring my old car NCB), I can surely save upto 18K. This would bring my OTR just under 10.5 lacs (seems to be a good figure). All said & done this car is now at the top-spot in my hit list (though I haven't test drive any others). But the bar is set at a higher level now. Wish the new Fiesta & the 1.6 Multijet would be as much fun to drive, else I would cut a cheque for the Fluidic Verna
