Kies takes a lot of time. Try early in the mornings. Kies users claim it to be faster in the mornings.
IMHO with the diversity in flashing, there is no use of using Kies. Upgrade using ODIN and firmware from xda or samfirmware.com.

Oh yeah!
Kies is what is preventing me from meddling with my phone.

And it instals .net 3, 3.5, 4 also while installing kies and the system slows like hell

I use lotus / domino too and thought this might be good info for you

1. Quip IM for Sametime
2 Lotus Launcher 2 for email
3. Touchdown for email, tasks, GAL (Global address list) Calendar and other stuff form Lotus (Paid)

Thanks. Will check with our IT helpdesk. My company is a bit strict on what can be used and what can't.

Lotus launcher does not need Traveller access. It works on your external Lotus I notes login system. If you are allowed to access email from a web browser using i- notes then this would work.

Quip Im also only needs your sametime server access details.

Touchdown is a paid app and this does need Traveler to be enabled to work
cheers

Speaker issue

I am totally confounded. My phone had come back from the service center, after a hard brick. It realised after reaching home that the (loud) speaker is not working. I can make calls and both sides hear each other well. The audio jack is all right too.

Took it to the service center again, and had to spend close to 3 hours waiting for them. They finally gave it back, and speaker was working - while the phone was at the place. Received a call 10 minutes after I stepped out, and no loud speaker!!!

(Means, if the phone is not on vibration, I get no alerts).

So, I upgrade the 2.2.1 installed by the a/s/s/ to 2.3.4 (was running 2.3.3 earlier) - stock from samfirmware. And still no sound. Dejected and beaten I slowly wind my way home, when I hear a holler and the phone vibrates. It is the phone and wife is on line. Puzzled, I try from my other phone (I now carry two phones - calls are forwarded to the other one if I do not attend incoming calls on the android one)). The phone does make a nice sound, albeit at very low volume (though the volume meter shows full volume).

I try again 10 minutes later, and the phone is very silent now.

Any clues??

NFS2024 - do not rush the flashing / upgrading process. The phone is just a computer, and unlike your PC, the phone does not boot from a removable drive. If something goes wrong while installing ./ upgrading a PC, you can always pop in a disk drive and restore the OS. Or even restore the BIOS. With the phone, you need to jump through several hoops - RIFF / jtag, etc.

So, do not rush through the process of upgrading the phone. True - actual process takes less than 2 minutes on my phone - from click of start button to appearance of the boot logo. But preparation time is around 10 minutes, and download time for the s/w was about 45 minutes. (Had to download approx 500MB in various files for upgrading the phone - ODIN, Samsung USB drivers, and of course, the firmware image).

ODIN is a specialised piece of software meant only to write the ROM to a phone in download mode. ODIN is used only for Samsungs, and is specific for each phone model. KIES, OTOH, is sort of what Nokia calls "PC suite".

I have not followed your posts so I don't know what phone you own, but if it is a Samsung phone, try this. Turn on wifi and play a youtube video (which lasts long) or play some audio that lasts long (at least half n hour) at full volume. After few attempts, your speaker should work just fine. This does sound weird, but it works .

Well i think i bricked my ephone. I was trying to upgrade through Kies and waited for a hour for the upgrade to complete, but it was just doing the prepartory work. I lost patience and logged off. Now when i connect through Kies, the firmware upgrade option does not appear anymore. The phone seems to be working fine without any faults. can someone tell me how to resolve this upgrade process? Will the upgrade be possible at all?

Then what about the upgrade? The firmware upgrade option does not show up in Kies anymore.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

things to try.

try on a different system, create a new user profile in the system and then try. some other program in your system may be conflicting with KIES.

I have also found that, if you upgrade after you do a hard reset of the phone, it usually works.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I have a Samsung Galaxy S which I have been using for quite some time. Recently though, I am facing a unique problem. The phone switches itself off automatically sometimes. It happens at any time: during calls, when on standby etc. The only option for me then is to reboot by removing the battery.

I am at a loss to understand what might be the problem. Any pointers please or anyone has faced this problem before?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

This is the story of my revived lg p500.
A few weeks back, I downloaded official gingerbread rom from a direct link and used kdz to update it. Had been a little impatient and didn't follow all precautions that I need to do,when using a two sided sword like kdz installer.
Result--bricked phone.
I left no trick unturned, but still no luck.Basically the phone didn't power on at all. Not even logo , no light.
So, I took it to service center and just said my phone doesn't power on.
The lg folks have a 1hr quick service timeline. They too tried all their tricks but the phone wouldn't budge.
So I left it with them and after 10 days , got a call to pick it up.
On reaching the service center, I was told the pcb had been replaced and I now have a new serial number and IME.They even showed me the old pcb -which has in fact everything but touch screen ,battery and phone skeleton.
In the invoice (to LG) that they generated, pcb was priced at some 8200/- (phone is still in warranty). The present market price of the phone seems to be 9k odd . So that gave me an idea of the cost of my mistake.
They updated the firmware to v20b (2.3.3).

Phone is working fine, touch-wood.
Getting battery life of 3+ days.

Am not able to root it though.Had to live with all the LG bloatware.

Lesson learned-- no patience means a bricked phone.
